Had my nails done and fingers are burnt

This seems dangerous and wondering if to say something to the lady, not let her before don't want to upset her as she seems new to the game but a number of my fingers are burnt on the skin just below where the nail is on my fingers and one finger has a bloody scab on it since getting my nails done.
The burns are from the UV lamp. I felt it at the time and was painful but it settled down quickly. She had the setting on 60 but I don't often get my nails done and don't know what's normal. Is this one of those things or should I say something.

You shouldn't get burnt from a uv bulb....

You need to message her straight away and show her what's happened.

UserError1 · 04/03/2023 16:20

When I first had shellac/gel nails I felt they were burning for a few seconds when I got them done. It's a weird sensation and if they get some of the gel on your skin it can feel burnt.

However my skin wasn't burnt. Are you sure it's not some of the top/base coat peeling away?

Please contact the nail lady asap..... her light may be faulty, either way she needs to know.

I've never been physically burnt by a UV lamp - the 60 setting means 60 seconds. Could you have been allergic to something?

MrWhippersnapper · 04/03/2023 16:24

It won’t be burns, did she catch you when filing ? New nails can feel sore sometimes

spottyhairband · 04/03/2023 16:28

That's interesting it feels exactly how a burn would I haven't had my nails done very often but not had this happen ever. I really liked the lady but now a couple of my fingers have pain. I did feel pain under the UV lamp so I'm not sure what that was then. Hopefully it's not burnt then. It's sore though and feels exactly like a burn when I wash my hands. Ie raw skin.

You can get hot spots from gel curing under the lamp, usually when using a builder gel where the gel is thicker. Some people are more sensitive. If you are and want to continue they usually say in for like 2 seconds, out for 2 or 3 back in for 2 etc. I do my own nails and research a lot. This is really common.

So nothing to do with the lamp but the gel hardening. And yes of course you should say something. If it is the skin where your nail joins your finger it is probably a filing thing if she filed your nails at all. Or a reaction to cuticle oil which they should use on you.

The bursts of hot with builder gel are 🤢

Did you get acrylics or anything that needed to be filed?

I’ve been getting my nails done at the same place for years and then a new woman started and she kept nicking the skin around my nail with the file. It was agony, especially when chemicals touched it when they were wiping down the gel topcoat.

I ended up having to have a word with the salon owner as all three times I went to the new woman, my fingers were in bits, looked awful, and were painful.

spottyhairband · 04/03/2023 16:45

Thanks I don't actually know what I had done (!) I needed extensions on a couple of fingernails and she applied those with a clear gel sorry if I sound daft but as I said I don't often get it done and don't have much knowledge on anything nails!

New acrylic can feel like it’s burning

SimpleHoardOfTruth · 04/03/2023 16:55

Doesn't sound good. If you get nails done again I'd put on high spf first. There is some evidence that the lamps cause skin damage - not a completely clear picture yet but it makes sense to take simple precautions.

UpToonGirl · 04/03/2023 16:58

Could you have developed an allergy? One of my friends did and her skin on her fingers would get red sore patches that peeled. She was told she would never be able to get gels again now she had developed this.

GulfCoastBeachGirl · 04/03/2023 17:05

If she filed the surface of your nail too much (not talking about shaping along the sides) then you can feel a burning sensation coming from the nail bed because your nail is too thin.

This happened to me when I was consistently having gel nails done. Even washing hands under very warm water was uncomfortable.

VeggieSalsa · 04/03/2023 17:19

Unlikely to be the UV lamp as the 60 setting will be seconds and is definitely normal.

Did she buff your nails at any point? I get similar if they accidentally catch my skin while filing / buffing, and I don’t often notice it at the time.

Otherwise maybe an allergy? Did they put cuticle oil on at the end?

FormerlyPathologicallyHappy · 04/03/2023 18:47

She’s buffed or you’re allergic to acrylic.

The strength of lamps is same as a window during daylight.

spottyhairband · 04/03/2023 19:12

Thanks I will give her a ring Monday. 60 seconds must be the time then! She did buff my nails yes. Had that done before but not had any pain from having my nails done before. Maybe it's the a acrylic. She did put and oil on afterwards as well

As others have said, it won’t be burns from the UV lamp. Is there any chance you could upload pictures of what you think are the burns? It could be an allergic reaction

moonriverandme · 04/03/2023 22:48

Could she have cut your cuticle when filing & preparing your nails? This can be painful & feel sore when washing your hands.
