Hello , am having an overhaul in my looks . Am 59 , and size 8 , red hair( bottle now ) i wear a be hive or victory rolls or a curly up do a bit like the hellana bonna carter hair texture n style .
i love clothes and textiles and colour.
i tend to wear 1950 or 60 shapes and particulary suit shirt dresses with full skirts . I am often told that i look like a land girl from the war years. ! Just so uou know . ! i do not suit dresses with no shape due to my height as i have a 32 d bust and that shape hangs from me and looks too boxy.

i love the quality and shades of toast , but the crotch on all the dungarees are at my knees and the dressess longer than i am . I would love to find a brand like that that fits me ! I would be happy to pay more for quality and style and have less clothes , but clothes i love !

i tend to wear
original vintage ( harder to find these days outside fairs ) as i both live the style and the proportions work on me .
i buy from some rellica vintage shops but have to be careful as they can be too’ fun’ for me ans i. Can look like minnie mouse!
i wear dungarees and a polo neck under in winter with a headscarf.

i would love to know of any fab dress or clothes companys. I do not lile gulden spoden as i am too small in height and look like a dressed up child in someones elsesclothes !
i love beautiful prints
eg love your look
palava
sea salt

i would love advice about other brands if anyone knows any? I want to be stylish and not miss haversahm ! I adore the outfits on queens gambit and nolly !!! Pussy bow dresses for eg!
thank u !!!

Following.

As a 52 year old 5'1'' person I don't think that toast clothes don't flatter the shorter person. For years I;ve worn simple clothes as I wasn't tall or voluptuous, just kind of not out of shape, and so I see the appeal of Toast, but. more fitted clothes always work better. A few times I've seen some really nice dresses in damsel in dis dress (phase 8) that were kind of 60s in their vibe.

tiny bit queen's gambit perhaps

I'm a similar height and dress size but with bigger boobs (30F)

My style is very different to yours ( although I also love colour ) but I have similar issues with the fit of things. I have accepted that almost anything I buy will have to be altered. Most dry cleaners have someone on site that will carry out alterations very expertly and at a reasonable cost. It's not just taking 8 inches off the length - I also have sleeves shortened and necklines changed from a round or tie neck to a shallow v-neck -much more flattering to busty women. I have also had dresses taken in at the waist and some very puff sleeves altered to a more flattering and classic straight silhouette. I leave the tags on things until the tailor has seen them and if she says they can't be altered they go straight back to the the shop.

Try Sugarhill Brighton www.sugarhillbrighton.com/collections/jumpsuits-dungarees

for clothes with great colours and prints and often dresses with a vintage feel. I always have to have them shortened but the fit on the body is just right for me.

I think at the moment there is a huge gap in the market in terms of good quality, interesting clothes that are not made for giants. When Toast first started, for example, they had a bigger variety of styles - e.g fitted jackets and shorter dresses. Now all their clothes are the same - lovely fabrics but the shapes are huge and shapeless.

Someone recommended Olive fir Toast-alike clothes on her sometime back.Thry are too small for me (5'8", size 16), so they may be good for smaller frames! .

I don't wear dresses very much but I do wear wear original 40s/50s/60s jackets, and part of the reason I like them is that they fit on the shoulders far better than anything contemporary. So I've bought some vintage sewing patterns (50s/60s) and I'm planning to have a go at making one myself, or if that turns out to be beyond my skill level (and it might well be) paying someone to do it, although I know it'll cost some serious money. Would that work for you? Vintage dress patterns are still around.

Principles used to be great for petites

I think Seasalt do some petite sizing but may not be your thing

Ginandammies · 05/03/2023 11:50

Floisme
yes i agree.. i did have a vintage jacket made up for me and ut is brillinant but expensive to have made as of course you have to pay for individually made.
coats are always always too big for me in the back .
vintage fairs are good too.
id love to get my hands on some vintage patterns . I live rurally tho and a dressmaker is hard to find and i am the most impatient sewer ever . If ot cant be done in 3 hours i go off the boil!

I’m looking for a good quality evening dress. Everything shop that I look at on line has bad reviews. Any suggestions?
