Can hair be re-dyed a lighter shade?

I just had my hair coloured for the first time, only wanting to cover the silver strands and match my original shade of brunette. They've made it way too dark though! It's almost black and really doesn't work with my skin tone, and it's just not 'me' any more. Next time it needs doing can I ask for it a couple of shades lighter and that can just be applied over the top or would they have to do stuff with harsh chemicals to remove this one first?

Have you just had it dyed as in today? Mine is normally darker for the first few washes then lightens out to a lovely medium brown. I think when colouring over grey if you match the colour, it'll fade and wash lighter but if you go slightly darker it'll fade an look like the original colour! I'm sure that's what my hairdresser said 😂

If you're going lighter, they'll have to strip it first. Same principle as going blonde.

Oh really?!! Everything crossed it lightens with washing! It was 2 days ago but I haven't washed it yet.

@sueelleker I get that with something drastic like going blonde, I was just wondering if that'd be necessary just for 1 shade lighter, or if that could just sort of be 'painted' on top!

If you're still not happy with the colour after several washes, maybe consider highlights, instead of stripping all your hair?
