Skin and (burning) me!

ShirleyValentin3 · 27/02/2023 21:33

I have opted to try Skin and Me again. I tried it a couple of years ago, but quit pretty quickly due to irritation. I remember why now..

I'm on day 8 - minus a couple of days off here and there to give me skin a rest as it was sore around my nose.

Tonight when I applied it - EVERYTHING STINGS. Really stinging and sore all over cheeks and forehead.

What are your experiences? Should I persist? It's really very painful and still burning 10 minutes on 😩

I’m just finishing my first month of it. I have quite sensitive skin and no reaction to it at all. My skin is looking fab though. Try contacting them to change the prescription? Or try Dermatica?

ShirleyValentin3 · 27/02/2023 21:41

Argh, just looked in the mirror and where I applied it is raging red and raised. Tried to wash it off and had to go through the agony of the burning again 😭

Pretty sure I won't be applying it again!

I don't know much about Dermatica, I'll have a look, thank you 🙏🏼

You really should get in touch with them. Don't suffer in silence. Customer service is supposed to be good.

Brazilagogo · 27/02/2023 22:55

I think your experience is not uncommon. I joined a Tretinoin group on Facebook before I started Dermatica and the general advice was to apply every three days to start with a strong recommendation to begin with a light moisturiser (especially around the nose and mouth) before applying the Tret, and then 20 mins later, applying a heavier moisturiser.

When you get a reaction like you have, they would say to stop and repair your skin barrier for a few days before trying again. One of the suggested gentle creams to help with this is The Ordinary Natural Moisturising Factors but people have all sorts of recommendations and are really into their skincare.

Rebel2 · 27/02/2023 23:21

Back off with it definitely for a good week and just cleanse and moisturise

Make sure your skin is dry before applying
So cleanse, dry and wait
You can apply moisturiser before it to buffer as well all over or just specific places like nose creases
Use it every 4 days then every 3 and build up
It travels so avoid nose creases, smile lines and around lips

(Using it since it existed so lots of experience with it!)

Thanks for the group info - will definitely join.

Have you read reports that it can make skin very painful and red? Tonight was like sunburn all over my face. Even washing it off was fresh hell.

Thanks Rebel - that sounds sensible.

I have just realised that tonight after cleansing I used a toner before the treatment. I don't usually do this. I wonder if that added to the experience!

I'm quite nervous to try it again, tbh. I have previously had reactions to skincare stuff, but usually only face masks.

I had this with the L'Oréal pink tinted golden age stuff that's for 'mature skin' - I've had lots of neurological stuff post covid and initially thought it was like weird hot burning flashes- I then realised it was 5 minutes after I had applied this moisturiser every time!!! It's left me with a patch of skin on Bridge of nose and just onto forehead that flashes like surburned skin a couple of times a day- for about 3 minutes. I'm exceptionally pissed off as checking online people have been saying this since 2013- I never thought to look because well it's L'Oréal and it's just a moisturiser!

dontgobaconmyheart · 28/02/2023 05:37

What's in your daily doser? Everyones is different so it's hard to say without knowing.

It might just be the case that something in the formulation disagrees with you or needs lowering in its percentage and easing in.

I really would just email them, they're very responsive and will just change the formula to something gentler and provide advice.

If it's got tretinoin in it then try starting with a couple of nights a week (only when your skin is healed). I didn't get on with tretinoin at all. They lowered the % and advised to moisturise before and after using it but it just didn't work for me and my skin was terribly sore and dry.

Don't put any active ingredients (acids etc) on your skin at the same time as it or while its sore. I found the Eucerin 5% urea skin repair cream brilliant for getting my face back to normal.

Donnashair · 28/02/2023 05:52

I had a similar problem. With raised red patches.

I contact them and they suggested using a moisturiser first and after. I took a couple of nights off and started again, with a thin layer of moisturiser before and after. Then I worked my way up to putting it direct on my skin.

I would contact them and give it a rest until they come back to you. Only took a couple of days for them to come back to me and that was over a bank holiday.

I am just about to start the 3rd month and had no problems since.

Some people do have bad reactions, and if you used a toner that had any kind of active ingredient in it before applying the Tret that could easily have exacerbated the reaction.

Also, you may have a sensitivity to one of the ingredients which isn’t Tret. My formulation has niacinamide and Azelaic Acid added which I tolerate quite easily after I’d eased into using it, but they sent a sample of a stronger Azelaic Acid and I was scratching my face off with it as soon as I applied a moisturiser over it. Skin sensitivity is very individual so what might work for one person, won’t for another - but it is worth going back to first principles of a basic cleanse and moisturise then reintroducing slowly.

Got to say I think you are all a bit bonkers- after using something that literally burnt my face I'm not into anything that I need instructions to do this and that before you apply it. I would rather have a few more lines and a face that doesn't feel sunburned in parts. I'm back to simple moisturiser in day and Clinique at night and drinking more water and green tea

It doesn't burn mine which is why I gave the advice
If you put it on every night from the start on wet skin then yes it can irritate

Crikeyalmighty · 28/02/2023 12:46

@Rebel2 Yep I appreciate that- I'm just really wary of anything that needs 'preparation' - and can't just be slapped on without thought after my experience.

mnahmnah · 28/02/2023 13:52

All guidance on how to use and what to do if it causes a reaction are in the emails and patient care leaflet

MurderAtTheBeautyPageant · 28/02/2023 14:10

some people just can't tolerate tretinoin.

ShirleyValentin3 · 28/02/2023 16:48

Thanks all.

Will see how it goes for a few days and perhaps reintroduce it gradually with lots of moisturiser.

Or maybe just shallow fry my face in lard, which might be less painful 😉

Thanks again!

@ShirleyValentin3 Ha, ha-- well it certainly put me off L'Oréal products as my skin hasn't recovered fully 6 months later.

Do you know, I just looked and the toner I used last night was part of the pink L'Oreal range...

@ShirleyValentin3

I wish I had read this thread before using it- but you don't expect it do you- it's moisturiser from a big brand name

Mine was moisturiser but others appear to have it from other products in the 'age perfect range'

OP, how many times did you use it by day 8? It sounds like you’ve overdone it as if you have sensitive skin you should start with only once or twice a week and slowly build up from there, buffering with moisturiser where necessary.
