Best charity shops Cheshire or Staffordshire

I’ve got a few days away next week, and fancy a good look around some charity shops.
I’m told that some of the Cheshire towns have some great charity shops.
Any recommendations?

Knutsford and Wilmslow are ones I have been and have been fabulous

Waterfallgirl · 27/02/2023 18:05

Thanks @Pieceofpurplesky

Altrincham is good. There are lots of them!
Just got back from Didsbury. Found the charity shops there disappointing. Poor quality and too expensive!

Bluebellwood129 · 01/03/2023 15:31

Knutsford is absolute shite. Don't waste your time.

FayCarew · 01/03/2023 17:29

It depends what you are after, I suppose, but my finds have been in rougher areas, where everything is under £5 or something, or in upmarket areas.

I'd be tempted to check out the ones near Alderley Edge.

Holycrapoly · 01/03/2023 19:12

Head to Newlife in Cannock. Requires a bit of trawling but it is the only place I buy my clothes.

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 01/03/2023 20:18

Some good stuff in charity shops in Sandbach yesterday. Was very tempted to come back with a handbag. The only reason I didn't is that these days, I need a cross body bag.

Waterfallgirl · 02/03/2023 09:11

Thanks @FANTINE2 , @FayCarew and @SpongeBobJudgeyPants - all good for thought!
@Holycrapoly - I have heard about New Life - I might go south a bit and try there.
@Bluebellwood129 😂 ok I hear you !

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 02/03/2023 09:26

Have a good time. Just to add, I had high hopes for Alderley Edge recently, but not great. Was spectacularly unimpressed by a bobbled-to-death M & S coat with £20 tag on it. The charity shop just across the road from Waitrose is ok however.

Of course, we are now invested, and to pay your tax Grin you need to return and show us your spoils!

FANTINE2 · 02/03/2023 09:34

I really wish they wouldn’t price the stuff so high!
I went in Cats Protection in Didsbury yesterday. I think they are trying to run it along the lines of a boutique. Nice stuff but priced too high in my opinion. No one in there, buts lots of stock. No point tho, if no one is buying!

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 02/03/2023 09:39

I agree @FANTINE2 a couple of our local charity shops are closing due to being 'unprofitable'. If your stock is all free, and your staff aren't paid (by and large, there may be a paid manager) how on earth do you not make a profit? Rents may be too high, no idea, but it's the same stock when you go in, as they seem to be pricing it too high to be attractive. It's like they've never heard of 'pile it high, sell it cheap'. I was an avid watcher of Mary Queen of Charity Shops. Can you tell? What particularly stuck with me was her idea of one person being responsible for pricing. I know it would get political, but you can tell when different people are responsible for pricing as prices for similar items can vary enormously, and perhaps some older people are out of touch with what is a good make and what isn't. Regularly see Primark stuff priced about the same price as actually in Primark.

holygerbil · 02/03/2023 09:42

I like bramhall for charity shops but I tend to be looking for fabric and things to repurpose

FayCarew · 02/03/2023 09:48

There's a Mary Portas Save the Children shop near me. It looks like a boutique, but it's generally just normal charity shop without the cheap rubbish. The 'outlet' shops are better IMO, mainly because i go in for a rummage. The boutique-type shop is probably better if you are just going round clothes shops.

One 'outlet' charity shop I go to is great, and I've seen people by a huge amount of stuff.

There's a hospice shop that has things nicely laid out and that's very appealing because it has a good book section and sells things like haberdashery.
I could leave with a set of buttons to sew onto something Ii have, or a book that might help make me slimmer or more stylish.

RedToothBrush · 02/03/2023 09:49

The rumours are overstated.

There's not much of the 'good stuff' left and what there is, is really expensive to cash in on the reputation.

Don't bother.

FayCarew · 02/03/2023 09:51

buy not by.
I'm no longer in the Cheshire/N. Staffs are.

Another comment: I don't like clothes displayed by colour. If they are organised, types of garment and size is better for me.

MadisonAvenue · 02/03/2023 09:57

Another recommendation for New Life in Cannock. It’s not a charity shop as in it stocks pre-worn donations but donations are made by companies and are surplus to requirement for various reasons (end of line, seconds, previous seasons etc).

newtb · 02/03/2023 09:58

Many years ago, I had to visit Newlife as part of a process audit. They were absolutely brilliant.

FayCarew · 02/03/2023 11:03

newlife

Waterfallgirl · 03/03/2023 01:17

Well I’m off to NewLife tomorrow so I’ll check in after that and show you what I’ve got @SpongeBobJudgeyPants !

Good. <Camp set up next to the computer, Spongey waits with baited breath> Grin

Waterfallgirl · 03/03/2023 17:53

Well some success today at New Life @SpongeBobJudgeyPants you can stand down now!

I got a pair of River Island cargo pants, a Sugarhill dress and an M&S gym/sports top. Dress was £20, trousers £12 and gym top £3. I am pleased I went.

it did need a trawl through, but I was in the mood for that so all good, although sizes were a bit jumbled about, for some reason they put all the 6/8/10 together and the 12/14 together so you have to rummage.

Most labels were removed, but I did see, Boden, Wyse, Ted Baker, Superdry and Toast stuff there with labels.

Many thanks for the original suggestion @Holycrapoly and also @MadisonAvenue

Mc Arthur Glen outlet is just down the road but I resisted!
