Sleek waves instead of shaggy layers - need a hair styling tool but what?

I have very thick, straight-ish shoulder-length hair and went for a trim last week. My hairdresser, who is a genius nine times out of ten, cut some very obvious short layers into it without asking me, and I think this is the one bad haircut out of ten. It looked great when he dried it but when I did it, I found the layers all blended together and now I just look like a shaggy dog. I used to iron my hair straight with my beloved GHDs but they broke last year and I haven't replaced them because I thought the straightened hair look was so far out of fashion it was probably coming back in. Anyway I think I need something else to tackle this - but what? I want sleek bouncy waves basically...

I always use straighteners for shiny bouncy curls.

That gives me hope, @AnotherFuckingUsername because I know I can handle them. But I always just used them to make my hair straight before, when it was all one length.

It's easy with straighteners - lots of YouTube videos for guidance. I've bought loads of other tools for curls and they just gather dust! (And the automatic swirly curly machine I refuse to use after it ripped hair out!)

Wide barrel curling tongue/wand? www.amazon.co.uk/large-curling-wand/s?k=large+curling+wand

Try one of the new hot brushes that dry your hair as you go.

Although I have wavy hair and layers. I found switching to a ghd hairdryer made a massive difference, it helps my hair look sleek. I also use a smidge of gel for frizz. And a standard denman brush.

If I ever do accidentally style my hair too straight, I simply tie it into a bun for a couple of hours and it bounces back.

I was wondering about a hot brush @ComeTheFckOnBridget

Whats the big styling brush that rotates as it dries, Revlon do one. I use one is a Babyliss but it doesnt rotate. I also use a Babyliss large barrelled tong. I have very thick, coarse wavy hair thats almost to my waist. I just curl the bottom 3rd of it

Or i use soft bendy rod curlers on damp hair or dry hair overnight

A hair waver? They look like three curling wand rods in a row on one handle and make very smooth wavy hair
