Do you have a (self-imposed) uniform?

I was struggling with getting ready each day with a little one, to be out the house each day in time for nursery drop off & work (casual wear fine for my work) looking presentable.

I had intentions of getting outfits ready the night before, but failed miserably.

So I’ve devised a kind of uniform and love it!

I have bought the same thick, supportive leggings in several neutral colours (black, navy, khaki) and a longer style jumper that covers my bum which I found super flattering in several colours and two pairs of the same boots in black & brown.

Its super easy to put outfits together, the style flatters my figure and is practical for my active days.

Does anyone else do this?

Yes. Marks and Sparks wide leg jersey trousers, blouse/top and jumper. Jacket if I'm cold.

I wfh and it's helped me out of a don't know what to wear funk.

WiltingLobelia · 20/02/2023 14:38

I do for work ;

Jersey dress in grey or black with a jacket the same colour. No patterns.

Home I usually have skinny jeans, a soft roll neck jumper and flat shoes in navy blue / dark green or burgundy.

One of my colleagues said once she never ever wears the same colours at work as at home. She only wears grey at work. That is so she has a mental separation for work and home based on colours. I really liked that idea so I have been doing the same.

radiatorflush · 20/02/2023 14:42

@WiltingLobelia I like that idea!! I might do that!

TheDead · 20/02/2023 14:46

I don't really now but I pretty much did when dc was small.

I had a number of variations on an outfit. It was brilliant.

I do keep pretty separate work / non work wardrobes though. I work in a creative sector so there isn't naturally such a division & I could pretty much wear all & any of my clothes to work or at the weekend.

But I don't like that so I have things that I keep only for one or the other

Cyclingmummy1 · 20/02/2023 15:04

I definitely have work clothes.

We had a non uniform day last week in aid of the earthquake appeal. Generally, I ignore these days and wear my usual school clothes but we were going out straight from school so I wore a pair of brown jeggings and a pink hooded sweater. I picked my year 3 class up off the playground in the morning as usual. To a body, they looked me up and down, and one said 'you don't normally dress like that.' Me - No, it's own clothes day. 'You look very... casual.' Mutterings all round that yes, I looked 'casual' (you'd think it was a dirty word) and did I dress like that at the weekend 😆😆 I'll go back to my usual school attire next time.

FinallyHere · 20/02/2023 16:20

Absolutely.

When I find anything I like, in a colour and shape that works for me, I buy multiples. All my clothes essentially work together because they are from the same colour/style palette.

Getting dressed requires grabbing a bottom and a top and maybe adding a jacket and a necklace. Simples.

Casual trainer shoes for everyday, high ankle boots for occasions.

's brilliant. But then I genuinely loved wearing school uniform, no decisions to take each time I got dressed.

LlynTegid · 20/02/2023 16:26

No self imposed uniform, just things I never wear. Jeans are never traditional denim blue, for example.

Usernamen · 20/02/2023 17:02

I live in London and when I’m not WFH I’m running around the city from appointment to appointment, so my ‘uniform’ is always just super comfortable clothes:

-Trainers (cool ones 😉)
-Leggings (jeans if going out, but honestly I’ve been in some pretty fancy places in my Lululemon leggings)
-Hoodie or jumper
-Waterproof coat (can’t be arsed carrying an umbrella).

I carry tinted lip balm and Benetint in case I need to look a bit more fresh.

I think this is pretty normal for London - it’s so much about getting from A to B comfortably!

HeadNorth · 20/02/2023 17:08

I don't have a 'uniform' but I do keep my work and non-work clothes seperate. If I wear something to the office, then it is consigned to workwear and I won't wear it at home - with the occasional exception of footwear. I've always liked to keep this seperation.

I now regularly WFH and will wear my 'home' clothes when I am working from home, but still never to the office. It makes no sense, but what can you do?

Sherrystrull · 20/02/2023 17:08

Yes! My work outfit is black leggings, black boots, black cardigan and a dress. Not very stylish I'm sure but it's comfortable, flattering and smart.

SadCelticBunny · 20/02/2023 17:33

Thank you for this thread, I hadn't realised the extent to which I have uniforms for different parts of my life.
For work I wear mostly White Stuff skirts with tunics or jumpers, leggings or tights with DMs of some description.

At home I wear unstructured trousers with tunics or baggy jumpers. Mostly I 'ave been wearing my Oodie though it's getting too warm now.
For gardening I wear clothes like Sarah Raven on a budget!

However, for going out and 'dressing up' a bit more I wear second-hand or cheaper versions of these.
like this
or
this
When I win the lottery I will wear the latter All the Time!!

Sorry about the picture I can't get rid of it! 😳☺️

TheChosenTwo · 20/02/2023 17:36

I used to in my old job, it was a navy dress with whatever else was required, dictated by the weather! Tights/jumper over the top/flats/winter boots…
Different job now, much more casual, mostly leggings and sweatshirts! And when WFH it’s mainly joggers and sweatshirts 😂
When not working I’ve definitely slid into more comfortable clothing, rarely dresses and tights anywhere now, cba making much effort when I’m feeling a bit wobbly and like I’d like to hibernate for a bit!!

TheChosenTwo · 20/02/2023 17:57

And I will say that I’m as active as I can be, lunchtime walk as much as possible, have classes booked too so I like to just be ‘ready’ for them - less of a barrier to me actually going if I’m already dressed for it.

Unicornsaregreat · 20/02/2023 18:05

@TheChosenTwo yes I’m also active, I live semi-rurally and love a lunch break hike or run so like to be wearing clothes I can just go straight out in. (Obviously shower & change afterwards if I’ve been running)

A bunch of 10 work suitable frocks & tights. No great thought required at 5.45am, just grab the next one off the hanger, grab coat/bag and go. Means I look vaguely respectable, they all accommodate changes in waist size through the month, and it appears almost as if I'd put some thought into it beyond finding something in the Sale section that didn't involve having my arse, boobs or bingo wings on show.

Once you add in ironing, suitable colour underwear, particular shoes and the like, it's all too much for me at sparrow fart.

HiImTheProblemItsMe · 20/02/2023 18:54

What are the supportive leggings OP? I'm very much a leggings and over-sized jumper person too!

Beenheresomanytimesbefore · 20/02/2023 18:58

@HiImTheProblemItsMe was about to ask the same thing!

20viona · 20/02/2023 19:03

I'm on mat leave so a hoody, joggers and beanie hat is my uniform daily 🤣

DorritLittle · 20/02/2023 19:04

Me too @HiImTheProblemItsMe

Also, what is the longline jumper...?!

TheOGCCL · 20/02/2023 19:09

Yes I have a consistent uniform that I wear pretty much every day. Jeans or trousers with a jeans type fly, top and cardigan/blazer. Boots in winter, sandals in summer. Occasionally I'll wear a jumper but they add too much bulk for my liking. I think if you can find a look that suits, it takes a lot of stress out of dressing and also shopping. For example I never look at dresses, skirts or dungarees. Pretty much all my top half clothes go with my bottom half clothes so I can put together endless combinations of this theme. I also vary the shape of the bottoms, eg skinny, straight, tapered. This outfit takes me everywhere with small tweaks.

Pasadenadreaming · 20/02/2023 19:10

Yep, basically in the winter it's a long sleeved Weird Fish dress with thick tights, boots, cardi, and in the summer a short sleeved one with leggings and trainers! I wfh so the top half looks fine on video calls and it's easy enough to run up the road to school in too.

Rebellious23 · 20/02/2023 19:17

Yes for work

3 blouses in grey, green and burgundy (same style)
3 skirts in navy, black, grey print (same style)
2 blazers in navy and black
2 smart cardigans in navy and black
Black and check trousers
Grey coatigan
Nude and black tights
Heels, loafers and boots all black
Then a range of dresses all of which go with the blazers or cardigans

FinallyHere · 20/02/2023 19:22

And, when looking for more 'dressy' clothes, I tend to stick to the same colour & style, looking for richer fabrics, so a slub silk top rather than a slightly textured cotton / hemp t shirt.

A pair of high waisted, leather look leggings have been particularly versatile this season, with silk top and ankle boots for going out out, with trainer style flats and a T-shirt for everyday.

A uniform makes everything so much simpler.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 20/02/2023 19:23

Leggings and Popsy dresses

Season0fTheWitch · 20/02/2023 19:26

Comfy skinny jeans, neutral jumpers and t shirts. Occasionally a floaty blouse. Either my all saints leather jacket or my big aviator style leather jacket. Rieker boots (DM imitation) or Black vans. Perfect for school run and errands, and everything matches
