A skirt too small, what to do

I got a gorgeous Lindy Bop skirt the other week. Loved the print, I knew it was too small when purchasing, but I have not seen it in my size anywhere and the company went bust so not gonna make more, so knew it was this or nothing.
It's a button up skirt, and it's the top button that I can't do. Losing weight is in the cards anyways, but I'm being realistic here and know this won't happen overnight, and want to wear it. One option is a longer top that covers the area, but was won dering if there are any alterations that can be done?
For the record, this is the sort of style.

Can you move the top button over?

dudsville · 19/02/2023 09:38

A skirt like that can easily be altered as the fabric is there in the top gathers. If you aren't handy yourself pop out to someone who does alterations.

Big minimising knickers or suck stomach in underwear?

NancyJoan · 19/02/2023 09:38

You could have a new waistband made in a fabric that works with the colours. You could probably get an extra inch out of it with it impacting the shape too much.

Buy a button extender?

If it's a temp fix of a single button issue, you could sew an elastic loop to the buttonhole side and fasten the skirt with the loop and button. Remove it once you're no longer needing it, skirt remains unchanged.

That's what I'd do.

I had a seamstress increase the size of the waistband in a very similar skirt. It had pockets so she used the fabric from one of these and added extra fabric to the back of the waistband. She charged me about £15.

To add mine didn't have a button it zips up so I couldn't add use a button extender

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 19/02/2023 10:05

Could you cut some arm holes in it and wear it as a dress?

And then leaving the top button undone (now the collar) will just give the air of relaxed casualness.

You might be able to get someone to take off the waistband and sew the whole thing to a new waistband in matching fabric, which would mean you could make the whole thing a bit bigger. Taking off the waistband and buttons and sewing up the placket, then loosening the gathers a bit and sewing the skirt to a new wide elastic waistband would also work.

Sadly even if I suck in it's just too tight, even if I manage to button it, it would be excrutiating wearing it...

Fab ideas, will try to do the button extender thingy as a short fix, and get on witht the weight loss, but also will look for someoene to do the alterations suggested!

If meantime you didn’t want the button extender to show you could wear a wide belt to cover the waist.

Lindyloomillion1 · 20/02/2023 22:12

No advice but that is gorgeous!
Hope you can sort the size thing

Do not do this.

There is enough fabric to alter it to fit you.
