Dyson airwrap - curls will not hold!

I've tried everything. Big barrel, smaller barrel. Using mouse. Using texture spray. Pinning curls. Hairspray. Airwrap on highest heat, highest fan, for 10-15 seconds, and cold blast for 10 seconds after.

One thing I've yet to try is using airwrap when slightly damp still. But otherwise the damn curls won't stay in - fall out within 2 hours.

I've got fine hair but lots of it, and very long. The mousse made my hair horribly sticky and ended up like a nasty rats tail mess (and not even curly). Does anything actually work??

"One thing I've yet to try is using airwrap when slightly damp still."

Do you mean you're drying it totally dry, then using the curling barrels on it? You're meant to dry to about 80% dry, then use the barrels 😊

Do you have the long barrels? They're really helpful for me!

I get out of shower, heat protectant, colour wow dream coat, dry to 80% using dryer attachment, curl in sections using the long barrel and pin the top half to cool whilst I do makeup / get dressed (about ten mins). Take pins out, bit of olaplex no6 and it's good to go. I have fine hair with a bit of natural wave, curls last 2+ days.

Tbh, when I've used it, it's not on a day im washing my hair, just styling it. But the mousse and texture spray leave it feeling certainly wet, or what I'd say 80% dry would be if im washing my hair. I'm using planked no 6 too. Did the colour wow dream coat make a big difference?

*olaplex no6 before using airwrap I mean!

It needs to be at least damp, if not actually wet.

It's a hairdryer not a curling tong.

pawz · 18/02/2023 18:09

It's more of a blow dry tool than a styling tool, so if you're not washing / drying your hair it's unlikely to hold tbh 😊

The colour wow tames all my frizz so it's amazing for me!

Ok - so if I'm using it on a day I'm not washing my hair, then what? Spritz with a bit of water maybe?

I wouldn't use it on a day I'm not washing hair. I'd use something else like a barrel tong.

AthenaPopodopolous · 18/02/2023 18:56

I’d say it needs to be freshly washed, slightly damp and have a product in it like mouse before you use the air wrap.

C4ou56 · 18/02/2023 19:09

Do curls hold in your hair with other products? I have fine hair but lots of it and even chemical perms I had as a child fell out almost immediately.

chirrpy · 18/02/2023 19:16

When I go to the hairdresser she uses straighteners to curl my hair and they last really well. No mousse either

If you're not washing the hair then spritzing with water sounds like a good idea - or another heat product like a tong!

Tongs / straighteners are way hotter than an airwrap, so they can "burn" a curl into your hair when dry and it can last ages. It's definitely a different style when it's airwrap vs tongs so it depends what you're after.

Are you local to london at all? They have a dyson store you can book demonstrations at and it's really helpful.

jackstini · 18/02/2023 19:56

For dry hair - you need to use straighteners to hold curls for a long time

Dyson air wrap is only for drying the hair into curls, it has to be damp or it won't work

Best thing I use is a satin curling band - works like bathrobe belt curls and lasts for ages! About £8 on Amazon

Thanks all, I'll try from wet next time. Hairdryer tool, smoothing tool to 80% dry and then airwrap.

I'm hesitant on using mousse again at all as it made my hair so matted and tangly and gross. Hopefully pinning + hairspray should do the trick!!!

I was doing this but I think your hair needs to be more like 50% dry for it to hold properly.

I have tried many different techniques and the wetter your hair the better the hold. Talked it through with my hairdresser and she steered me in the right direction.

wherearetheturtles · 18/02/2023 20:14

Colour Wow Dream Coat is a good alternative to mousse - it doesn't go sticky and has a good hold

LindorDoubleChoc · 18/02/2023 20:17

There isn't a hairdryer, curling tong, device, mousse, gel, rag, roller, pin curl, hour sitting in the hairdressers chair or anything else that will make a curl stay in my hair. I think some of us just have hair that wants to be straight!

redredwine40 · 19/02/2023 12:02

I have the dyson airwrap for long hair and NOTHING I do will hold the curl. Literally tried everything. It lasts for about 20 mins then my hair is as flat as a pancake. I can curl my hair with straighteners and they will last for days. I am now resigned to the fact that I have bought a VERY expensive hairdryer 😭

SnaccidentsHappen · 19/02/2023 12:07

I got rid of mine for this very reason. Works great for some people but just not for me
