I need a frock for my sisters wedding

I am mid fifties and very much a combat trousers t.shirt combo kind of a gal since I retired early. I used to have to wear a suit to work so it was actually easy just chucking one on every day and I appear to be having a sort of dress down rebellion after being in a suit for so many years.

I am terrible at dresses I’m 5ft 4.5 inches and weigh about 9 stone 10, I am a 36D cup size and a bit of an hour glass shape. I have mainly silver grey hair as allergic to hair dye that is cut in a shoulder length bob and olive toned skin. I prefer not to wear heels but do have some wedge shoes in black and some wedge sandals. I have plantar fasciitis so heels are tricky as will end up in agony. When we were young my sisters used to dress me up as I was so bad at it, like one of those cut out paper dolls.

I have spent all day looking at fifties style stuff, both wiggle dresses and full skirt frocks. I am bewildered with the amount of choices. There is some nice stuff online but I have never bought any clothes online and wonder about quality. I’m prepared to pay £75 but no more. Can anyone recommend a site and help me pop my online clothes buying cherry. I’m sorry for the long post but I’m crap at fashion. Thanks in advance for services to the dishevelled.

I am no style guru, but I didn't want to leave you unanswered.

Do you live near enough to go to one of the Department stores that have 'Personal shopper' service ? I know my friend who really lacked confidence in her clothes choosing, found it really helpful when she was looking for her ds's wedding.
She said some stuff was awful, but it really helped her be much clearer in her own mind then about what she should avoid, or the sorts of things she felt looked better on her. The PS was much more confident that she would ever have been about offering a dozen different styles to start off with, and then narrowing it down.

Think of what colours suit you
Next I'd say as you have an hour glass figure you'd want to emphasise your waist. A nice v neck midi dress maybe. I can picture a style so I'll have a little look for you and get back to you

Hmmmm
I'd get my bra size checked. I bet you're more like a 32h.
I have psychic bra abilities 🤷🏻‍♀️

As the word frock gave me a lovely flashback to my gran.

I'd like to echo a PP that you need to get properly measured for a bra, I very much doubt you need a 36 band.

Try ASOS, they have a huge range of dresses in every style.

Agree with prev poster - go along to John Lewis or somewhere for a session with a personal shopper. You can try lots on and they’ll advise. Also agree about the bra thing.

Frockfinding · 18/02/2023 01:05

Thanks for answering everyone I appreciate it, I will pop along and see a personal shopper sounds quite flash so will look online to see how to book one. There is a little independent bra shop in my area so will get measured properly as I have not had a new bra for a couple of years.

Do you really need to wear a dress?
If you were previously happy in suits, I'd go suit, jumpsuit or even co-ordinating trousers and top. ASOS is good for this - quick search showed these, but I'm sure you could do a better search. And you can get away with flats as well.

Neither of those look 'wedding smart' though, IMO.

Not saying that there aren't trousers or jump suits that do - I have seen some lovely ones, but just don't think either of those work for a wedding.

Plus (and I don't think this can just be me) a jumpsuit isn't very practical to be in through the day and night when you need the toilet.

I was thinking that (not the specific size) but that bra size doesn’t sound right

namechange3394 · 18/02/2023 14:05

Agree with everyone else about the bra size - unless you're a size 16-20 (which seems very unlikely at your weight!) you are very unlikely to be a 36 band. If you Google "Boob or Bust" you'll find some instructions as to how to measure yourself at home.

I've had some good stuff from Pretty Kitty.

You are definitely not a 36 back with that weight and height! Whatever dress you get, buy a properly fitting bra to make it look even better.

MrsMikeHeck · 18/02/2023 14:13

As a fellow hour glass, I would recommend getting the dress look by combining a skirt and top. They can be the sane colour of complimentary. I would go all out on finding the right skirt, as the quality and fit of that is the most important thing. Then spend rest of time/money on a top.

I’m another one that thinks you are wearing the wrong bra size. What clothes size do you wear?
