I'm usually in jeans and a tunic, occasionally jazzed up a bit with accessories. I go 5 or 6 times a year. Anything goes, pretty much.

I would say "smart casual" covers the majority of people I see. Because of my transport (motorebike) I'm on the more casual side.

I'm a big fan of dresses OP, what kind of dress are you looking for?
I think you should dress up as much as you want to, and enjoy it!

Sparklesz · 16/02/2023 19:52

@heldinadream I really like classic dresses more on the elegant side with a little something different.

Patterned or more plain?
What colours?
I'm looking at Roman, I usually like their stuff but today it's not doing anything for me - but it might for you!

I recently went to the ballet in Covent Garden. Agree, anything goes. I’d wear whatever you would if you were meeting up with mates in the evening/pub/cinema/theatre. I wore dark trousers and jumper, plus boots, a warm coat. But whatever you like.

Jeans, a dress, whatever. Clean, not scruffy/dirty. A bit of an effort, but that’s just me. Tbh I didn’t notice what anyone else was wearing. Mostly jumpers and trousers (cold). Remember there is everything from very cheap seats to super expensive, and all ages too. Maybe because ballet is an art, it’s understanding of other poorly paid/struggling artists, so you can go casual if that’s how you feel most comfortable. Wear decent shoes (eg not threadbare trainers) and job done.

@heldinadream they are lovely. Thank you, but maybe more for summer days.

I am thinking plain and maybe black or a emerald green. I seen a few nice ones on Next but the reviews were not great. Will have another rummage online tonight.

Smart. But the last time I went to the ballet ( London) at least half the women were wearing midi dresses with trainers, and most looked very well groomed.

touron · 16/02/2023 21:28

What are you going to see? @Sparklesz

I'd add that people dress more casually, but still smart casual, for a matinee, but I'm guessing you're attending an evening performance.

Sparklesz · 16/02/2023 22:02

@touron going to see Swan Lake in the evening.

@DelphiniumBlue will be doing my tan, nails etc.

@touron
I guess if any of us have a tiara, the ballet is the place to wear it!

Sparklesz · 17/02/2023 17:37

Think I've found the dress. Not sure what colour of shoes and bag to get. Will look for a long dress coat to go with it. Edinburgh is freezing.

I used to work at a large touring theatre and for ballet and opera, you'd see everything from jeans to black tie. What I did notice is the regular patrons were less likely to go over the top.

Very pretty and it's not going to mark you out as a "newbie"

So far as a coat, tbh, unless you are going to leave it in the cloakroom (and I don't know if The Playhouse has a checked in cloakroom) just wear something to keep you warm and which you don't mind rolling up and stuffing under your seat.

The Royal Opera House has a very efficient cloakroom but for going to Edinburgh theatres I never wear a "good coat" for that reason.
