To get lip filler at aged 50

fairycakes1234 · 13/02/2023 12:35

Im 50, and for last 5 years i have seen my top lip disappear and i mean its literally non existent, cant wear lipstick or i look like aunt sally, i obviously dont want to look ridiculous, was talking to local salon and she has assured me she can give me 1ml and it would look subtle, i know 1mls is a lot but not when you haven't a lip. She said 0.5 wouldn't do anything. Im terrified but intrigued. I dont want to look silly, i know i sound vain but Im really not. Honestly do you think I would look silly and everyone laughing while Im thinking noone has noticed. I am heading away for 3 weeks so was going to get it done on monday and i leave friday so plenty of time for brusiing to go down. Any older ladies ever get it done and were happy with it? Thanks :)

By all means get it done, as long as you know that it is always obvious to others that you’ve got lip filler. If you know that and you don’t mind, then crack on if it’ll make you happy.

Yamaya · 13/02/2023 12:38

Is your lip really that bad? Can you post a picture?

Freakingout86 · 13/02/2023 12:42

It definitely CAN be done subtly, if you go to the right person. I've had it done, built up with sessions of 0.5ml. Mines been so natural that, parents, DC, best friends and partner have not noticed the difference, but I feel so much better with a subtle enhancement.
I always said I would never do it but it's changed my confidence for the better. Honestly, do it.

Mintsgreen · 13/02/2023 12:43

They may say they don’t notice it…

It is always evident.

Mintsgreen · 13/02/2023 12:44

People have posted photos of theirs in the past, saying ‘look, you can’t tell!’ People can always tell Grin and that’s absolutely fine if it gives you confidence or happiness or whatever.

LeandraDear · 13/02/2023 12:46

I imagine that you would only know if it is a super pout or a butterfly one? Other than that if it is someone you don't know and it is done subtly, how would you?

fairycakes1234 · 13/02/2023 12:46

heregoes :)

@Mintsgreen As in no one knows I've had it. And no one's asked me.
I know my friends and family, they would definitely call me out if they noticed.
Thanks though.. apparently you know them better than I do 🙄

Honestly OP, it's your face, your choice. There are lots of people who have it and you wouldn't even know. Either way, good luck, and I'm sure your beautiful either way😊

Artemisty · 13/02/2023 12:47

When you say "salon" what do you mean? Is the person a Dr?
Anyone can do an online course and administer lip filler. There are some people who are very good at this but there are issues with having it done by someone who isn't medically trained:
They can't administer the dissolver if you don't like it
They're not as likely to recognise/ be able to respond to a medical emergency.

But to answer your question - absolutely no issue with getting lip filler. It can be done with subtlety and I'd certainly consider it too.

I would however get it done by a Dr..

FadoFado · 13/02/2023 12:49

I have seen examples where it wasn't obvious that the person had had lip filler. 1ml sounds like a lot though.

SirChenjins · 13/02/2023 12:50

If you're going from zero to a lot then it will be noticed - depends if that bothers you or not. There's always a difference, otherwise no-one would bother doing it! Just make sure you avoid that swollen upper lip look or that turned up at the edges look - neither are attractive.

fairycakes1234 · 13/02/2023 12:59

Thanks its a salon but a qualified doctor (hes actually a dentist) comes once a month, i have been assured it can look natural and the reason it doesn't on younger girls is because their lips are quite full anyway so when they get filler which they dont need it blows their lips up, she said with my lips 1ml will give me back a lip but it wont be overdone. This doctor wont do it on people who dont need it, hes always in demand and turns away younger girls. Would anyone that is older care to post their lips just so i can get idea, just got caught in work smiling inanely into the camera a few minutes ago :(

They're quite thin, so I'd say it was more sensible to start with 0.5 or 0.7 then build up. Less chance of migration. I'm concerned they can't see that.
After the initial swelling subsides the difference will be barely noticeable at 0.5, except to yourself, so that is true.

It will make a big difference. Depends on your lip shape, and the technique used and how much filler used, but some is almost imperceptible.

krill · 13/02/2023 13:06

After an initial 0.5 or 0.7 you could return in a few weeks or months (on advice) for a top up of similar amount.

You keep saying this, I have filler on one side only due to an old accident. It is impossible to tell which side has the filler.

OP do it, if it makes you feel good then go ahead, just make sure you go to someone who is well qualified and knows what they’re doing.

Showersugar · 13/02/2023 13:17

It isn't always that obvious - I thought I was pretty savvy when it comes to injectables but was surprised when a colleague of about 50 told me she'd had her top lip filled. I privately thought "crikey I don't know whether I'd be pleased I'd gotten such a natural result, or pee'd off that it was so natural it was imperceptible!" - that was until she showed me a before pic and I could see there definitely was more volume there.

I think the reason it looked so natural, other than it being a small amount, was because she had retained some of her natural asymmetry and it hadn't created that weird shelf effect that you sometimes see even with quite modest applications (I guess that's because the clinician had just refilled what my colleague had lost rather than augmenting what had never been there in the first place if that makes sense?)

That does make sense

I agree that it can be imperceptible. I'm no expert but I think I'm good at spotting even well done subtle filler, and sometimes I'm not sure.

OrangeKnot · 13/02/2023 13:34

@Mintsgreen it is not always obvious at all. I have it OP, and it is subtle. As with all, you get what you pay for and my practitioner is clinically excellent. I have not tried to tweak or alter, and simply augment what is there. There is some small swelling initially, but once that settles my lips look as they did before volume loss due to aging.

user187656748 · 13/02/2023 13:38

These are mine pre filler (covered in emla cream) and after 0.5ml. Personally I wouldn't go straight to 1ml.

Pinkdafodils · 13/02/2023 13:42

How long do these dermal fillers last?

user187656748 · 13/02/2023 14:06

I get mine done about once every 18 months. Recent research has shown that the filler can stay for years and mine have certainly never gone back to the thinness levels they were before I started.

Lapsedcataholic · 13/02/2023 14:38

My adult daughter had it done, so subtly that you wouldn't notice at all. But her upper lip disappeared when she smiled and she was self conscious about that. I don't know the amount she got but it was definitely worth doing for her confidence. I do know that she went to a clinic which was much recommended to her by people in the beauty business, and was more expensive than some other places. Worth the money.

An alternative idea, is getting your lips tattooed. I got mine done by the woman who does my eyebrows, its called aquarelle and it evened out the shape of my lips and added a bit of subtle colour. My lips were losing pigment and shape due to the ageing process and I'm very happy with the result.

5128gap · 13/02/2023 18:16

I have a friend in her 50s who had it and it looks great. She only had 0.5 because she had no desire to 'enhance' as in get bigger lips than was natural for her (this is when it looks obvious becayse they're over stretched and unbalanced to the face), merely to 'correct' and return them to the previous size/shape which was natural for her. She took an old photo as a guide.
I think its really important given the current fashion for less natural looking lips to be extremely clear what you want to achieve rather than be guided by the practitioner, who may themselves have a totally different idea in mind as to the desirable look.
She should also not be advising you to go straight in at 1 as the best advice is always to start with little and add more if necessary.

barbrahunter · 13/02/2023 18:19

I'm nearly 70 and I have it done and I love it! It puts back what used to be there.
