It's dh's bday soon and I want to buy him some nice trainers but he's very conscious of not dressing too young for his age. I was thinking maybe new balance? Any other suggestions? Budget is £150 or less x

I think you maybe overthinking this a bit, OP. Being 42 doesn't mean you have to restrict yourself to certain age appropriate brandsWink As well as New Balance maybe have a look at Adidas and Veja they have lots of nice trainers.

summermist · 12/02/2023 15:01

I should have said he's over thinking it not you sorry

schmalex · 12/02/2023 15:13

42 is hardly old, surely he can wear any trainers he likes? My 43yo husband wears Vans.

FlappyValley · 12/02/2023 15:17

No such thing as “age-appropriate trainers” OP! My DH has some nice Vans and Veja ones in various colours.

fancyfie · 12/02/2023 15:20

Are they for a particular activity or just leisure wear trainers?

bananamum13 · 12/02/2023 15:22

Nike Air 90s.
There's no age limit on decent kicks!!!

pastypirate · 12/02/2023 15:23

Not new balance!!

Vans or converse if they are just for bumbling around.

SausagePourHomme · 12/02/2023 15:24

Campers

Weelegs29 · 12/02/2023 15:25

My hubby just bought his first pair of New Balance at 45 years old! Normally he wears Adidas Sambas/Gazelles

Angelofthenortheast · 12/02/2023 15:28

42 is too young to be worrying about age appropriate clothing. Unless he's considering a pair of burgundy cushioned-sole velcro sandals

pawz · 12/02/2023 15:30

New Balance (the tennis style ones - 300 court are really good and come in some nice colour ways), Nike Court Vision are the same and look good! Love vejas mens for DH too - comfy and stylish.

I think 40s isn't too old for any of those styles! Unless he's got a particular style, I'd steer away from Jordan's or the like, apart from that I think most things are fair game 😊

FKATondelayo · 12/02/2023 15:31

You see I think of New Balance as 'dadly' and would recommend avoiding.

DH (51) wears Walsh trainers - they are the only trainer manufacturer in the UK so not too labelly and a bit classic and they are probably perfect for a man wary of looking too 'hello fellow kids'. but still wanting style.

(DH also wears some ridiculous 'fashion' trainers too.)

LittleLegoWoman · 12/02/2023 15:33

Honestly, take a look at what the teens are wearing in your town. Figure out what the one or two styles your seeing on 80% of the 15-17 year olds is. Then pick literally any other style. Trainers don’t have an age limit. He doesn’t want to dress the same as the local teenage boys. So skip whatever the current ´it’ shoe is, but other than that, pick whatever you like and you think he’ll enjoy.

Pardon44 · 12/02/2023 15:34

My husband (44) has 300 pairs of trainers. Think about his style and not his age.

New Balance have been on vogue for the young for a while now. I see lots of young people in London wearing them especially the chunkier ones like the 327s. Dadly is cool now haha

thedevilinablackdress · 12/02/2023 15:56

Literally any trainers at all that he likes.

LocalHobo · 12/02/2023 16:04

Wrong! I don't know about any others but
New Balance manufacture in the UK (and have a great factory outlet in Maryport) They were also recently featured on TV

SummeryBells · 12/02/2023 16:07

Merrell or Timberland both do really comfy type trainers-like shoes.
You wouldn't play sports in them but they suit DH as a casual look and he's late 50s.

evilharpy · 12/02/2023 16:09

Mine is nearly the same age and has a thing for Adidas Gazelles. I bought him a pair of bright orange New Balance (forget the number) for Christmas and he seems to like them.

Dartmoorcheffy · 12/02/2023 16:10

Dp just turned 40 and he wears sketchers which he says are the comfiest trainers he's ever had.

Thighdentitycrisis · 12/02/2023 16:11

If you’re worried about him looking too try hard- look in m and s

icefishing · 12/02/2023 16:13

Trainers have age restrictions?
I would have said avoid Yeezys but that issue has taken care of itself.
What kind of styles does he like? How much cushioning? What color-ways does he usually wear?

TulipTuesday · 12/02/2023 16:15

43 yo DH (And all the blokes he knows regardless of age) wear adidas gazelles.

Like teenagers though I think it depends on your ‘tribe’ DH is in to football as are the guys he knows, so gazelles are part if that terrace culture vibe.

aibutohavethisusername · 12/02/2023 16:16

Sketchers

CosyFanTucci · 12/02/2023 16:18

The brand you’re looking for is Walsh - stylish, made in the UK and reasonably priced. Don’t get the high street brands (except New Balance at a push).
