What to wear in Rome

DH and I are going to Rome in April, sight seeing type holiday so lots of walking. I want to look classy and stylish but people are telling me trainers are a must for the cobbled streets, I fear I’ll have sweaty feet and comfortable trainers won’t go with my preferred wardrobe of maxi dresses and skirts. Any advice?

Are white trainers no longer the MUST WEAR shoe with dresses?

wear hidden socks, don't wear them barefoot!

EllaPaella · 12/02/2023 12:14

I went to Rome in April 3 years ago and it was warm (not hot) during the day but quite chilly in the evening so make sure you take some warmer layers. There are a lot of tourists so despite what people might say it isn't full of sophisticated chic by any means.
Most people were wearing T- shirt, jeans and trainers; noticed a LOT of Nike air force but it was three years ago so probably trainers have moved on a bit since then.
I just wore pretty much what I would wear on a UK city break during summer.

HiccupHorrendousHaddock · 12/02/2023 12:15

Layers for it dropping colder in the evening and very definitely comfortable shoes. There's an awful lot of walking and some is on uneven ground.

BitOutOfPractice · 12/02/2023 12:15

I’m afraid I’ve turned into one of those “trainers go with everything” people that mn despises.

EllaPaella · 12/02/2023 12:16

You will do a LOT of walking so comfortable footwear is essential. We stayed with friends who lived there, they told us that Romans tend to dress for the season not the weather.

ShandaLear · 12/02/2023 12:16

I wore my Dr Marten Adrian chunky loafers and they worked well. You’ll need to break them in before you go, but that doesn’t take too long.

Dress appropriately for the weather i.e. don't wear summer clothes just because it's sunny if it's not actually hot.
I spent a few hours there the summer before last and noticed so many men wearing long white shirts and blue jeans in temperatures around 30C. I didn't notice what the women were wearing at all so it must have been unremarkable.

Witchbitch20 · 12/02/2023 12:20

Layers.

Its pleasantly warm during the spring but cooler in the evenings and I find churches/museums a bit chilly.

Romans generally won’t wear trainers but most visitors do. Leather brogues or DM’s/chunky boots if they’re comfortable and broken in might be a better option.

A trench coat/light jacket for the intermittent showered would be my must have.

Geamhradh · 12/02/2023 12:22

Whatever you want. But absolutely comfortable shoes. Beginning of April could have temperatures into the 20s, it could be cold.
Italian tourists anywhere will wear trainers, jeans, puffa jackets. Just like everybody else.

SirChenjins · 12/02/2023 12:25

Trainers - I cannot emphasise this enough. I bought lovely chunky sandals to wear with my various stylish outfits and soon realised that I was overdressed and uncomfortable. The amount of walking you’ll do over cobbled, hilly streets cannot be overstated. Jeans, comfy trousers or leggings and a coat will be needed in April. It’s a beautiful city - have a fantastic time!

SirChenjins · 12/02/2023 12:27

And yy to a pp who said it’s not as chic as you think it’s going to be - probably because every visitor is walking for miles each day and so dressing for comfort.

silverclock222 · 12/02/2023 12:34

Comfort comfort comfort and enjoy!

ChinUpChestOut · 12/02/2023 12:41

I went to Rome a couple of years ago and what I remember is everyone was wearing sunglasses, technical puffa jackets (so not bulky), jeans and trainers. Obviously the trainers were a bit fabulous. As were the sunglasses. Small stylish backpacks if Italian tourists - and there were many.

I don't know how they do it. Even Italian tourists in Rome look like they haven't tried very hard, they just ARE that stylish. And comfortable.

LydiaBucket · 12/02/2023 12:57

Thank you 😊 yes I suppose I’ve fallen into the trap of thinking everyone will look stylish and effortless and I don’t want to look like a typical tourist but maybe that’s not so bad?!. I have lots of trainers but a lot of them are fashionable chunky types and not necessarily comfortable for a lot of walking so I’ll maybe have to go shopping!.

I'm visiting in April and taking Birkenstock Mayas and Nike Jumbo Blazers. As everyone else has said comfort first. Not every Italian person is stylish. I personally don't find their uniform of puffa jackets, jeans and sunglasses to be very interesting.

Mercurial123 · 12/02/2023 15:09

Sorry that should be not very interesting

rookiemere · 12/02/2023 15:11

Possibly very outdated now, but when I went to Rome, I wore Fitflops and my feet were absolutely fine even after days of 30k steps.

thirstyformore · 12/02/2023 15:14

I went to rome last April. It was fab. But like others said bring layers as was quite chilly in the evening (and boiling in the day when the sun was out!).

I wore dr marten sandals. https://www.office.co.uk/view/product/officecatalog/2,60/4193200000060?gclid=CjwKCAiAuaKfBhBtEiwAht6H7w7AjPIuS4AHG613EErhfW-EprEa9-b8qvXlVI3RYfc77NI9Lo9sfRoCvswQAvDBwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

Really comfy, allowed my feet to "air" and looked ok with jeans, dress etc

IHopeNotSporadically · 12/02/2023 15:20

You can wear trainers with skirts and dresses. Don't be one of those people wearing wedges and uncomfortable diamanté sandals so they go with your pretty outfit.

chipsandpeas · 12/02/2023 15:25

I’m in Rome just now and deffo wear trainers the amount of walking on uneven streets you will be thankful for them

minipie · 12/02/2023 15:32

Definitely comfy shoes. I wore very comfy flip flops (unstylish foam efforts from Decathlon) it was a heat wave so far too hot for anything else.

You will see a few insanely overdressed tourists (satin evening dress type outfit), they are the instagrammers, usually with bored boyfriend in tow. Everyone else is in comfy stuff.
