Polishing leather boots

hugoagogo · 11/02/2023 15:45

I cannot seem to get my boots to stay shiny for long.
They are polished the way my grandad showed me 40 years ago; apply a small amount of kiwi polish with a soft brush to clean dry boots, allow to dry for a few minutes and buff with another brush. They look pretty good, but five minutes outside and they are dull and dusty.
Does anyone have the answer?

I apply polish with an old yellow duster. Really rubbing it in. Leave it to sit for a while I usually forget about it four hours/overnight buff it off lightly with a very very soft brush until shiny and wipe over with a fluffy cloth.
I get away with doing this once a week.

ExH was the best boot polisher and that's how he showed me how to do it after I complained he bulled my work boots!

You skipped cleaning the boots. First you should clean all the mud and grime off them with either saddle soap or leather cleaner for boots.

Then when cleaned and dried you polish as you said.

Then you need to apply a finish coat of Dubbin on top.

I am cleaning them- usually with a damp cloth, sometimes with saddle soap.
I could try leaving the polish on longer.
I have dubbin, but I think that just seems to make them even more dull. Confused

Dubbin shouldn’t, usually if it makes them dull it’s because the Dubbin is too cold…have you tried warming it up a bit?

The dubbin is greasy, so dust and dirt sticks to it even more, it is shiny to start with...
