Is there an age women stop showing their knees?!!

I just turned 45 and am thinking of treating myself to this quite expensive (for me) dress in maxmara. My mum made a comment about me not getting long out of it as it’s above the knee - is that a thing? Am I going to wake up next year and only wear midis?!! I don’t want to get it and realise I’m too old for it; I have three DVF that I’ve had for years and expect I’ll keep wearing so was hoping this would be another investment buy… I’ve never even thought about my knees before!!

as an apple shape my legs are mi best but. Will be wearing minis in my 80s!!

For me it's nothing to do with age and everything to do with weather! 😂

ArianahX · 11/02/2023 15:40

I've just bought a mini shirt dress in the sale from River Island, I'm a size 16 aged 46 woman and will be showing my knees in my new (very nice) dress. Which is a summer dress so my legs will be bare! (And I hope a little slimmer).

Also.. I wear a uniform including trousers to work but see a lot of managers & admin type staff far older than me who look good in their above the knee smart skirts & dresses.

ArianahX · 11/02/2023 15:43

And. My neighbour is a size 8 70 yr old biker who wears vest tops with her leather mini... it does help that she's petite has dark hair & olive skin and in my street the men all like her & the women are jealous!!

SockGoddess · 11/02/2023 15:44

Well I haven't waved mine around since I was about 25, I am very self-conscious about them as they're so wide and lumpy-looking, even if I'm slim elsewhere.

I don't think it's an age thing, it's just what you're happy with. I think it's fine for anyone to cover up any bits they don't want to reval, and show bits they do. Some people have lovely legs and knees into old age.

EyesOnThePies · 11/02/2023 15:56

I am 65. I wear above the knee things all the time. With tights if formal / smart, without if hot summer dress / shorts sort of day.

No one has died of shock yet, and if they do… it’s their own fault.

Yes I think there is an age when you stop showing your knees. I think it's about 107. Wear whatever you want when you want.

Knees are not offensive. My mum wears shorts and she is 80.

RallySooney · 11/02/2023 16:04

Is she an Irish mammy by any chance, op?

Pinkieismyname · 11/02/2023 16:05

59 next week and I've only just started wearing dresses after years in jeans) - 5'3" and all mine above knee dresses. Whatever works for you.

fancyfie · 11/02/2023 16:06

Does something happen to our knees post 40 or is it a 'rule' like the long hair over 40 and that sort of thing?

My friend complains of her sagging knees, but I can't see it and have told her so. She does a lot of cycling too.

MaverickGooseGoose · 11/02/2023 16:07

Christ, I'm 45, I wear shock horror shorts in summer, it's never occurred to me nor to!

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 11/02/2023 16:16

This is akin to 'you shouldn't have long hair' beyond a certain age.
My view is that if it suits you, wear it. There will be much younger people who don't suit above knee dresses/long hair/whatever. I've a big stomach and hips but shapely legs. Generally I go for longer length but I've a couple of summer dresses which are just above the knee and I think they look fine (and I have some honest critics at home who would definitely tell me if that wasn't the case!)

The dress you linked to is gorgeous. I'd never spend that much on a dress apart from for DCs' weddings but each to their own. With a statement piece like that you just have to be honest with yourself about how it looks on you - not just length, but colour, pattern, style etc. do you have a friend whose opinion you trust who would be honest whether it suits you? That's what counts, not some outdated opinion based on age.

Oldraver · 11/02/2023 16:29

Oh I think it's just one those silly rules people liked to impose on ladies of a certain age.. short hair, no knees showing etc. Gone are the days you would get to 50 and don crimpilene twin sets ala my MIL

I've always disliked my squidgy discoloured knees but just not bothered by it now

Yes Irish - how did you know? Is this an Irish thing?!! I do wear short dresses & shorts in summer - it never even occurred to me to think about my knees (which are perfectly fine btw!) until my mum said that.

I am 50 and chubby, my knees are not my best feature but in summer they come out.
Anyone who doesn’t like my knees is welcome to not look at them
