Training a fringe - how hard can it be?

faffadoodledo · 09/02/2023 18:09

I've been fringeless for a couple of decades. I'd really like a heavy, layered drink again. How hard is it to achieve without it just turning into a short pair of face curtains? Is there a foolproof way of training a fringe?

Not a heavy layered drink obviously!
A heavy layered FRINGE!!

I'd quite like heavy layered drink too.

Get your hair cut by a decent hairdresser.

faffadoodledo · 09/02/2023 18:20

@KirstenBlest I do. I've an appointment on Saturday. But friends have told me on gloom laden tones that new fringes are a nightmare. So I'm after some top tips to employ after the cut

You need one of those large round barrel brushes.

otterlyr · 09/02/2023 18:26

What is your hair type OP?

If you want a thick fringe then you need thick hair. It's not really easy to 'train' it, it depends on your hair type.

But if you get one cut in you can always just grow it out if you don't like it :)

ancientgran · 09/02/2023 18:27

If you find out I'd love to know. Trying to tame mine for the past 70 years and it still does what it wants.

faffadoodledo · 09/02/2023 18:38

Oh dear @ancientgran!
@otterlyr my hair is very thick, dark and straight. Hairdressers call it 'strong' but I'm not sure what that means!
Well, the dark has a few grey flecks. But largely dark. And nicely shiny actually.

I don't put the hairdryer on mine, just comb it wet, but I am fussy who cuts my fringe.

ThreeB · 09/02/2023 18:48

Heavy fringe owner here. The key (for me at least) is a smoothing shampoo and conditioner and then a smoothing serum. Dry the hair with the dryer pointing down and then straighten with straighteners.

I notice a massive difference if I don't use a smoothing shampoo (think frizzy mushroom) so that is now my absolute go to

idonotmind · 09/02/2023 18:54

Well you've got a good start, having thick heavy hair

Do you live somewhere damp?

faffadoodledo · 09/02/2023 18:56

Ha! @idonotmind I live in cornwall. There's a reason it's so green!

I have a lot of hair but it’s fine and I have a cow lick and I have a fringe which takes some managing as you can imagine.

I blow dry mine across with a very thin round brush, so L to R and vice versa it then falls forward but totally wipes out any natural parting of the hair.

You need to trim it though as any length that you swipe away creates a parting.

HiImTheProblemItsMe · 09/02/2023 19:44

I found it fine. My hair is straight but fine (I have a decent amount of it though). I was told I'd have to use straighteners etc but I didn't. I just brushed it to the correct place when wet and let it air dry and had no bother. I don't condition mine or it goes greasy but that depends on hair type I expect. Enjoy! I've never had so many compliments as I've had getting a fringe!

faffadoodledo · 10/02/2023 07:16

Lots of top tips here. Thanks all. Im edging towards that fringe!

QueueEtwo · 10/02/2023 07:26

I've cracked this, watched a YouTube video!
You brush it across your forehead one way & then straight back the other way with the hairdryer on it - keep doing that until it's dry!

Your hair doesn't know which way it's supposed to go & ends up hanging straight!

otherwayup · 10/02/2023 07:28

I disagree that you need a good hairdresser, I cut my thick fringe in during lockdown (I was bored 😂) and haven't let a hairdresser near it since!

I love my fringe and get so many compliments about it, it is a commitment though!

faffadoodledo · 10/02/2023 07:28

Brilliant! Will search it out!

BessieSurtees · 10/02/2023 07:29

@QueueEtwo Yes that's what I do, works a treat

PigTableManners · 10/02/2023 07:40

You need to brush your hair and part it to how you want it to sit dry when it's sopping wet, I do it literally as soon as I get out of the shower. Use a fine tooth comb for your fringe as wide tooth ones end up separating the fringe into chunks.
If I leave my hair in a towel turban while I do my face etc I end up with a messy fringe and a hair crown that just won't part or sit right. If your hair dries (and fringes dry so fast) then it will be set like that no matter how much or where you blow dry it. the only way to rectify it is to wet it again.

OrderOfTheKookaburra · 10/02/2023 07:44

I just cut a fringe in a month ago after not having one for about 20 years.

I blow dry in a low setting and use an extra large curling wand or straighteners for subsequent days when it goes a bit skew wiff. I find the curling wand gives me the better bottom, but the straighteners are better at fixing it close to the hairline if it's sticking up after sleeping on it.

Fantastic product.

VeronicaBeccabunga · 10/02/2023 12:04

I bought a set of travel-size straighteners via eBay to wrangle my fringe.
When it's just been cut I have it dead straight, if it's getting a bit longer I put a curve into it.

honestlyno · 10/02/2023 13:17

Even after all these tricks and more, mine still hangs in curtains. Please report back if you find a miracle x

Thank you! I couldn't remember - cow flick? Cow lip? Cow lick...

I've never been able to train my fringe accordingly. I've had to have a side fringe coming down across my face.

One hairdresser did try it (a good one) and said I'd be able to train it... Nope. Never.

If you don't have that though, I can't see a problem.
