Am I too old for this (Sezane) dress?

I’m going to a big family wedding and was looking at a midi dress (the Estella) from Sezane to wear for the occasion, but have been advised by a friend 😡 that the dress is for a “much younger woman” 😢.
Im 61, so ok I know I’m no spring chicken.
Dress seems fairly safe to me, not a boob-baring mini! However there is a slit at the front of the skirt.
Opinions very welcome?

Also - just general advice on Sezane fit? I’m tall (nearly 6 foot), big boobs, athletic build so arms and legs quite chunky (not fat). Does Sezane only fit petite french girls?!
Thank you This is the dress:

Gosh thank you all for the replies, really helpful and encouraging! I get what some people say about the tea dress/granny look, and will have a think about that, though tbh a lot of my dresses are flowery teas - I have long hair and wear them with what I tell myself is boho style, but maybe just look like a mad old granny 😅
Will check out the other site suggestions for cheaper options as price is steep, but I do love this dress - actually prefer the California print, but in the photos it’s really difficult to see the dress rather than the model.
Re shorter dresses, I have varicose veins so above midi length not a good look.

It's not inappropriate in any way, but IMO it falls into that category of clothing that looks cool on younger women but can look granny-ish on older ones. Nothing wrong with that, but I'd bear in in mind.

I know what you mean - a flat chested waif of 17 can look wonderful in certain clothes whereas it doesn't work on an older woman.

@MrsCornelius I don't think this is very "weddingy" in term of its colour. Looks a bit autumnal to me.

Auldandknackered · 09/02/2023 10:46

Friend is jealous the dress is lovely and is totally appropriate

i Hate when people make those little spiteful put down comments.

antipodeancanary · 09/02/2023 10:51

I'm 60. I'd wear it. I'd also look bloody good in it.

DazzlePaintedBattlePants · 09/02/2023 10:55

Another one who thinks it risks being a bit dull, and that it's nothing to do with your age! Friend is an arse.

That said, those tea dress type things look better on gamine youths. I find Sezane sizing fine - buy it and send it back if you don't like it:)

CorsicaDreaming · 09/02/2023 10:56

To me it looks like a lovely classic tea dress. Classic and elegant and totally suitable for any age of person really... lovely for a wedding.

If it is a bit too low cut you could wear a camisole / vest top under it.

Buy it and love wearing it for the wedding. And then make every effort to wear it for every occasion you can after. Don't leave it languishing in the wardrobe for best. Just enjoy it and wear it lots!

That bombshell dress looks fab.

A couple of alternative suggestions from Monsoon.

Yes, that would be my only hesitation (see also tweed and midis). It depends on the rest of your look, though, OP. If you have got a strong, contemporary look, you can probably carry it off.

Wimbz20 · 09/02/2023 15:14

OP - that's a lovely dress and you should wear it. Nothing inappropriate about it. Go look lovely and enjoy the wedding 😻

MrsCornelius · 09/02/2023 17:14

Very tempted now after all your encouraging messages. I’ve looked at Vinted but am not in UK, they list 85 Sezane midi dresses in my country in my size, but none are suitable.
I wear flowery tea dresses with birkies and a denim jacket all summer, so this won’t be a departure for me, but crucially is smarter than my usual £30 (Next or similar) dress so hopefully more suitable for a wedding.

Sezane clothes are lovely and worth the price in my opinion. It’s a gorgeous dress. I’m mid 40s and love the brand… and still
Plan on wearing it in my 60s. It’s chic!

Purplecatshopaholic · 09/02/2023 19:03

Buy the dress, ditch the friend. Or at least avoid asking her advice on clothes going forward, lol. It’s a fine dress, a bit bland if anything, certainly not for a younger woman (what the hell does that even mean!), but not show stopping either (which may be your style, or what you are fine with). Come on ladies, wear WTF you like, at any age!

SorrelForbes · 09/02/2023 19:33

Try the dress. At nearly 6ft I doubt that the v neck will be too low for you. IME, Sézane works well on taller women.

MrsCornelius · 09/02/2023 20:12

I think I’m going to get it! Not tonight as am nervous of online shopping after 🍷🤪
Will prob get it this weekend, when I have a bit of time, and will update this thread and let you know if I keep it or return.
Thanks for the support everyone.

I think the dress is lovely and I’m around your age . And for all those saying these kind of dresses look grannyish on older women - surely that’s a massive overgeneralisation. It might look amazing on some older women - and terrible on some younger women. Different folks suit different things.
The only thing I would say is that it’s a dress I would wear more casually. I did wear a dress similar to this to a wedding once and felt distinctly underdressed . Depends on the wedding though

It's very pretty but it's an every day dress.

Nothing to do with the dress, but I really dislike the way Sezanne shows its clothes - all that "oh look at me I'm so Jane Birkin, so French, I've just fallen out of bed, can't find my underwear or a hairbrush or time to fasten the buttons"

MrsCornelius · 21/02/2023 17:48

Update as promised - I bought the dress, and I love it! It’s a perfect fit in my usual size (EU size 42). Sleeves are not too tight (often a prob for me as I’m athletic build/muscly). Bodice fits exactly but comfortably over my somewhat ample bosom, and I love the print and material!
it’s quite casual for a wedding guest but that’s my style, I can’t do formal. I’ll dress it up with sandals and a shawl.
Very happy and will buy from Sezane again. Thanks for all the advice everyone.

I'm so pleased. Enjoy your day

LadyEloise1 · 22/02/2023 10:08

Please don't take style advice from this "friend".
She sounds daft.

KindlyKanga · 22/02/2023 10:14

Thanks for update I did wonder if the top would fit on someone with more boobage. Looks nice

TheYearOfSmallThings · 22/02/2023 10:20

It's perfectly appropriate, although I agree with those saying these dresses suit a young woman best and can be strangely ageing.

audemoray · 22/02/2023 10:20

Perfectly fine. It looks more for older women of any age,. By older I mean post 20/30.

It's lovely

Lobelia123 · 22/02/2023 10:26

I dont like it personally as the fabric can look frumpy if not styled right, but more than that, that dress length is very hard to wear. Id pass.

Silvergone · 22/02/2023 11:19

Your friend is being a bitchy idiot, probably jealous cos they can’t afford a new dress themselves.

Wear it if you like it.

LoisLane23 · 22/02/2023 18:09

Having shopped in sezane In Paris quite recent there was all sorts of women in there from 16-76! Just order it and make your own mind up! It looks lovely and their clothes are excellent quality!

avocadotofu · 22/02/2023 18:27

It looks lovely. I don't think it's especially young.
