How do I go and get a make over at a makeup counter?

I want to get my makeup done for my sister's wedding in London next month. Can I just go up to Bobbi Brown in Selfidges and ask them to do it on the morning if the wedding? or should I book? Is it free?

I'm actually clueless about it. Help!

I used to work for Clinique and then Chanel (for 15 years). Yes you could walk up and ask for advice and they’d probably try and sit you down for a makeover (it was our “goal” to get everyone who walked up to the counter to sit down and sell them at least 2 items). But for a special thing like a wedding I’d ring ahead and ask to book in - we did used to take bookings- as you’d want to make sure they had enough time and staff to accommodate you. Generally it’s free but some counters do charge and you can redeem it against products.

You can book online (Bobbi Brown), not showing selfridges but other London stores. Normally the cost is redeemable against purchases. MAC do it too.

I got a Bobbi Brown makeover at my local John Lewis. Redeemed costs against products. Was lovely Smile

The issue here is that you aren’t actually asking for a make over - which all make up counters do - but for a wedding make up on a specific day.

Yeah.. they only do the "make overs" to sell you stuff. It won't be like booking a make up artist for an occasion.

I'm very happy to buy All The Makeup. Also, I'm not looking for wedding makeup specifically, I just want to look nice and like it's been professionally applied. I normally just wear foundation and mascara, so I have zero skills in that area.

But, since I started this thread I have tried to book appointments with literally every makeup brand at every London store within an hour of the wedding venue and there are NO appointments. It's a month away so I thought I had plenty of time. I can't understand why it's so hard. I suppose because it's a Saturday? The wedding's at midday so I need a morning slot.

Anyway, I've given up. Anyone got any good makeup YouTube tutorial vids they can recommend?!

For tutorials I would recommend Lisa eldridge.

I used a minimal product one of hers for my wedding, due to my lack of skill, and it was perfect.

You could use Blow - make up artist comes to your house / hotel it's very easy

Pampered Wolf https://www.youtube.com/@PamperedWolf/featured

I would recommend Ali Andreea. Her tutorials are brilliant.

You should take some time to research which makeup brand will suit your colouring. Bobbi Brown tends to have quite a yellowish base so I look jaundiced in their foundations. It might be better to trial a few for hints and tips on applying the products. You could then but the products you like best.

Don't give up. Just check AM and PM for a cancellation slot each day.

Or you could hire a private make up artist for an hour or two on the day- sure you can find someone advertising their services online.

I did look at a couple of private makeup artists but the ones I found have a very Instagram influencer style. Lots of contouring and eyebrows. Nothing wrong with that look on a twenty something, but it really wouldn't suit me. I don't want to shell out and end up with a face full looking like mutton dressed as lamb.

If only I could afford Lisa Eldridge... I've been watching her vids and she's amazing.

Have you contacted any hotel spas? Many of them do make up with high end products. They see all sorts of people of all ages so they will be more than capable of doing what you want.
