Is this worth £130 at hairdressers for?

I get my hair done every 8 weeks
Normally roots to cover my greys and some caramel highlights
This time I just need my greys covering
Im just not sure it's worth the price tag just for my greys
Would you just get a root cover up and do it at home?

That made no sense ...apologies I was in a hurry
"Is this worth paying £130 for?"

£130 for roots? Wtf

No it's not worth it, it's not even a good job op, you still have a root

MargaritMargo · 07/02/2023 12:51

I just dye my hair at home!

I do a root cover up (I just use regular dye and only mix up half the quantities - saves money!), it takes 20 mins once a month or something.

I also put a semi permanent tone on a few days after the root touch up, to keep my colour fresh.

I appreciate when someone has a very specific hair colour that salons are worth it (thinking platinum blonde or intense colours) but for the majority of us with variations of brown / black - it is perfectly acceptable and sensible to just do a home dye job.

just remember to do a quick patch test day before! Then spend the 100£ on some new shoes

Eatentoomanyroses · 07/02/2023 12:52

No. If that’s all you want I’d just do a root touch up at home until you need a trim and highlights etc.

NCcantthinkofanewone · 07/02/2023 12:52

Actually I've misread, you haven't had it done yet 🙈

Do it yourself.

bringyourbigcoat · 07/02/2023 12:52

I haven't been yet -this is the root I need to cover up ha ha

I pay £56 for that every 8 weeks or so, but that's Shropshire market town price. Are you in a city/use a sleb hairdresser in the Cheshire Posh area?

WhenYouWalkThroughTheGarden · 07/02/2023 12:58

I imagine it won’t cost as much if you just get the roots done and no highlights. Or is that the price for just your regrowth? Sounds steep.

justmindinmybiz · 07/02/2023 12:59

I pay £80 for a root tint, cut and blow dry and it's a lovely salon!

Anoisagusaris · 07/02/2023 13:07

Are you sure it would be that price for just a root touch up? How much do you normally pay when you also get highlights?

lowclouds · 07/02/2023 13:09

I wouldn't pay that.

bringyourbigcoat · 07/02/2023 13:23

It's normally £180 with the highlights
It's because she puts a gloss on at the sink (not sure really what it is ) then the blow dry is £60 with the trim

It's Manchester City centre where the salon is based

Could you ask for a less experienced stylist (cheaper) to do your roots, then your regular stylist do the cut? We offer that at my salon.

NameNight · 07/02/2023 13:34

I'm in London and paid £120 for a wash, cut, blow-dry, highlights, and toner! (Blonde with dark natural hair)

frostyfours · 07/02/2023 13:35

It fades just as quick as home dye so save yourself a lot of money and buy the clairol root touch up!

TheOGCCL · 07/02/2023 13:41

I’d definitely do it yourself. I think with straightforward hair people have no idea if you spent £10 on a box dye or £100 in a salon. It’s much easier and more forgiving than you think. You won’t look back.

MrsMontyD · 07/02/2023 14:02

I grew my colour out when I started to get greys, I had a few in my fringe that started to appear within 2/3 weeks of a colour. I grew the roots out (it was highlighted so looked ok) for about 8 weeks and then had a full head colour matched to my roots so as it grew out it wasn't very noticeable.

I didn't want the commitment of root touch ups every few weeks, at the salon I go to it's £57.50 for a root touch up and cut/blow dry or £65 with highlights. I still don't have a lot of grey but I'm going to let it change naturally.

In answer to the OP, that's a very expensive salon.

RosesAndHellebores · 07/02/2023 14:06

For that I'd have a TBar, cut and blowdry. My hairdresser would charge me £130 but that's in S W London and very cheap for SW London. Full head cut and blow dry which also includes foils and 2/3 colours is £180.

LazydaysofSummer · 07/02/2023 14:23

L'Oreal Magic retouch instant root concealer, around £7 and lasts for ages!

lobeliasb · 07/02/2023 15:08

That seems very steep! You can do a root touch up yourself with demi permanent dye (probably what your stylist calls a gloss) which lasts 28 days and only has weak bleach. You can also use it for an all-over refresh. Demi permanent colour fades slowly and won't damage your hair or leave a line of demarcation like permanent dye would. Sally Beauty sells it, you'd need to buy the dye and developer separately. You'd use a 10 volume developer for demi permanent dye.

I never bother to add on a blow dry when I have my hair coloured. I have curly hair so would only end up doing it again anyway but they never seem to mind if I tell them at booking.

ForThisUn · 07/02/2023 21:53

If you just do your roots on their own or at hairdresser you are going to have a very dark central panel esp at the front there? I don't know whether you are pulling your hair flat but it doesn't seem very even either. If that is your growth after 8 weeks I would say to extend your appointments to 10 weeks. I have mine done every 8 weeks but my hair must grow a lot faster than yours.
