Help me decide how to have my nails done!!

I'm going to a salon today (for the first time ever) with my daughter to have our nails done for a birthday treat followed by coffee and cake.
I've got short trimmed nails.
I've always fancied fancy nails but never had them.
Im thinking of having acrylic nails today as a one off. I am a bit worried about the state of my nails after they come off
Can you take them off yourself with special stuff?
Any inspiration on colours or things that are vaguely on trend currently?

Acrylics are terrible for your nails. I would just have a really good manicure.

I have Builder in a Bottle gel nails and it's helped me to grow mine out comfortably, I much prefer them to acrylics now (and I used to always have acrylics on before this). If you do go acrylic get them soaked off properly when you want them taken off otherwise you could damage them. You could remove them at home with acetone, cotton wool, foil, nail files and cuticle pushers but I've found that such a faff I'd rather get them removed.

I have started having gels and I am very happy with them.

Can you get those in a salon too @PumpkinDart ?
Im clueless as you can see

Whatever you decide to do OP, let the salon remove them. Do not attempt to do this yourself as your nails will be damaged for months

Yes it's basically a gel polish that strengthens your nail and helps grow your own nails out if this is something you wanted to do. Otherwise if it's for a one off a nice manicure would work even on shorter nails, or even gel polish but I'd agree with a salon soak off.

Removed at a salon for gel/ BIAB gel/ acrylic, ordinary polish you could do remove home.

*remove at home.

I’d recommend Builder in a bottle if you aren’t planning on keeping up with acrylics. They look good and leave your nails in much better nick. Speak to the nail tech though. They will recommend you something good.

Shellac/gel polish in a nice colour is what I do (also not a regular in salons). You can remove it at home but it's hard work. Need to soak with acetone for ages. I would recommend salon removal in 2-3 weeks when you have too much regrowth.

anybloodyname · 07/02/2023 23:05

I tried BIAB on and taken off 2 weeks later in salon

Exactly the same damage as previously with gel or acrylic

Nails thin /splitting /raggy /dry , now using a damage repair oil daily and won't do them again .. normal polish manicure for occasions or holidays in future

EasilyDirected · 07/02/2023 23:11

I get normal gel/shellac on short nails once every few months, I always remove it myself, it is a faff and takes about an hour but I've never suffered any damage.

How did you get on OP?

I'm following as thinking of having nails done professionally for first time ever too.
