Good afternoon,
I have recently had my teeth whitening and my dentist suggested that I should have Invisalign due to overcrowding and some wear on my teeth (she said this will get worse). I am unsure about the proceeding, I am in my mid fifties and it's quite al ong process , does anyone have advice ?

I hope you're all having a good Sunday. X

Your teeth look lovely! I wish mine were as nice. Can’t really see how you need them
straightened.

StuntNun · 05/02/2023 14:25

From the photo it looks as though your lower teeth are angling inwards. If that's the case then they can continue to collapse inwards over time. Invisalign or braces would straighten them up for you but you need to be aware that afterwards you will have to wear a retainer at night for the rest of your life. A lot of people doing Invisalign don't seem to get told that up front.

Invisalignquestion · 05/02/2023 14:27

Thank you, I never thought that I had great teeth but I know they could be worse. I felt a little pressured and self conscious afterwards. My self esteem is easily knocked sadly and I thought by asking on here I would get honest opinions.

Your lower teeth are quite retroclined. So Invisalign could help you quite a bit with that. But as previous people have mentioned... You will have to wear a retainer at night after the treatment is over.

declutteringmymind · 05/02/2023 14:32

Dentist here. You don't need it. If you want an improvement, you'll get one. If you walked in happy about your appearance then keep an eye on the tooth wear and see how you go.

Myjobisanightmare · 05/02/2023 14:33

Your teeth are pretty good Invisalign just improves what you have they’ll still likely not be perfect and you’ll have to wear the retainer and the process hurts overall I don’t necessarily regret my treatment but i naively thought my teeth would be perfect but now I realise there’s only so much manipulation they can do with the teeth space available

Invisalignquestion · 05/02/2023 14:46

Thank you all for replying.

@declutteringmymind what would you suggest for the tooth wear? My dentist said it will only get worse if I don't have Invisalign. I didn't tell her I was concerned, it was my first visit to her for a check up.

I did mention my previous dentist ( I was very comfortable with her but she has now gone to live overseas), she said the wear was very minimal and not to worry for now.

Sounds like the dentist is upselling.

RuperttheBearHug · 05/02/2023 14:49

Another one to echo that you need to wear a retainer forever on Invisalign and nobody really mentions it. Best thing I ever did though. I do think your teeth don’t noticeably need one though.

KangarooKenny · 05/02/2023 14:50

I think your teeth look lovely, I wish mine were as straight as yours.

MaverickGooseGoose · 05/02/2023 14:53

I do t think you need it, does the dentist provide the Invisalign?

Littlemissprosecco · 05/02/2023 14:55

Dentist here!Your teeth look fine. Better than fine actually. If the wear is because you are stressed and grinding at night you could consider a mouthguard. Im guessing it’s actually just 50 years of wear and tear, which tbh doesn’t look excessive.

Invisalignquestion · 05/02/2023 14:58

@trieditbuyedit , this did worry me. I think she may have seen me as someone who could afford it so suggested it. It will cost £4,500.
She was already talking about other dental cosmetic treatments ( composite bonding and veneers ) before the end of the consultation.

Perhaps she read the notes from my previous dentist when I did mention the wear on one of my bottom teeth.

Thank you @Littlemissprosecco , I think that you are right. I'm 55 so there is bound to be wear at this stage.

Littlemissprosecco · 05/02/2023 15:00

I don’t think you need composite bonding and veneers!!

Notadrill · 05/02/2023 15:02

Your teeth look healthy and nice - normal. I've had SureSmile (basically same as Invisalign) and it is long process and pricey (but not painful). But I had a lot of overcrowdingband couldn't clean properly between teeth.

2bazookas · 05/02/2023 15:13

Lovely teeth! Don't spoil them.

Some wear on teeth is normal with age. FGS don't go for that awful American pensioner look, I hate to see a 70 yr old mouth with implants that look like the perfect even white teeth of a virgin 17 yr old.

One of my favourite TV things is spotting "before and after " teeth on celebrities ... before they got famous and after.

Invisalignquestion · 05/02/2023 15:16

@Littlemissprosecco she said we can talk about those treatments after the Invisalign, I didn't enquire about the treatments. She mentioned changing the shape of my teeth.

I do feel unsure about staying with the dentist now and I may look at changing, it's so important to be comfortable with your dentist. It was my first visit as my previous dentist of 20 years has left has to live overseas.

Invisalignquestion · 05/02/2023 15:19

@2bazookas I know exactly what you mean 😃

Littlemissprosecco · 05/02/2023 15:26

If you’re uncomfortable then it’s not right for you. I’m a true believer of” if it’s not broken, don’t fix it”
Most cosmetic dental work has compromises and limitations, make sure it’s absolutely what you want before starting on anything. Once enamel has been removed it can never be replaced.

Chewbecca · 05/02/2023 15:32

Should or could?!

Should - no! Could - yes if you were looking for absolute perfection in your teeth.

Your teeth look fabulous.

Invisalignquestion · 05/02/2023 16:01

@Chewbecca that's very kind of you.

declutteringmymind · 05/02/2023 16:08

@Invisalignquestion

She will have to look at the cause of it, and give you options. You can always ask for a referral to an orthodontist for a second opinion privately as well.

Invisalignquestion · 05/02/2023 16:11

Thank you @declutteringmymind, she said it's because my teeth are overcrowded and will get worse which is why I need Invisalign.

I think that I will get a second opinion.

bumpytrumpy · 05/02/2023 17:50

You don't need it! Your teeth are lovely for mid 30s never mind mid 50s!
