Hair colour/bleaching at home… advice please

I really want to change my hair colour (dark brown/black). In the past I’ve usually gone for reds. But I now want a totally different colour…. Blue! The brighter the better!

so my question is, if you’ve dark hair, what did you use on your hair to lighten it before you dyed your hair?

Or are there any blue dyes that go onto dark hair easily?

thanks

I suggest you go to a hairdresser. It’s very difficult to do this at home yourself. Check out YouTube!

i highlight my hair at home with bleach - i use the jerome russell packs - but im willing that if i fuck it up its on me, and im usually going from a dark brown, highlight then put a light brown on - dunno if i would attempt bleach then a blue dye - i did go pink about 20 years ago but it only lasted a week as the dark brown roots came through very quickly

I’m not a hairdresser, but using basic colour theory, you would need to be able to get your hair extremely light before applying the blue, as yellow + blue = green
sounds like one for a good hairdresser!!
you could really damage your hair trying to get it light enough.

Seriously, from a professional, just don't don't do it. It will cost you more to fix when it goes wrong and that's if anyone reputable will even touch it after home bleach.

Watch it, blues are extremely difficult to get out, more so than reds. So you have to really commit.

And yeah you'll need bleach. I've gone red to blonde myself two or three times and it is v hard on the hair.

See what you can remove with ColourB4 Extra Strength but it will only do so much and you'll need to bleach to get rid of all the warmth. Try and leave 2 weeks between bleaching and use Olaplex 3 and deep conditioner masks too.

Is the dark brown/black your natural hair or a box dye? Either way I'd go to a hairdresser, but it's an easier job on natural hair than coloured; I had dark brown box dye stripped out of mine to go back to copper and I was in the hairdressers for six hours just to get it that far, so blue is a big ask.

I helped my son dye his hair blue in the summer after his A levels. He bought the colours from Bleach London. As I recall we used three stages - the bleach followed by toner and finally the blue. His natural colour is dark brown. The blue took well initially but faded to a sort of turquoise quickly. As his hair was short he had some leftover blue dye which we applied a few weeks after the initial application and that kept a stronger blue for a while.

I use BlondeMe bleach, never high street bleaches.
however when going blue , you really need to get the right initial lightening result or you can end up with a muddy green. If you have coloured hair, this could take quite a bit of work and a few goes

😱so much to consider. I think I won’t bother with dying hair blue.

Thank you for all your replies. It’s really helped me come to a decision 🤗
