Do I NEED foundation?

I'm starting to wonder this. Every foundation I use, however good, eventually turns orange. I've read that this is because it oxidises in the air. So even if it's the perfect shade in the morning, I'll always get a faint orange on it by later in the day, and the older the bottle gets, the more the shade changes.

I have good skin. I'm 38 but no wrinkles or lines (Botox takes care of the 11s). Well, some super light ones around/under my eyes but not enough to bother me. Never had an acne problem. I do have dark circles and a couple of minor blemishes but concealer/highlighter sorts them out fine and doesn't go orange.

Do I really need to use foundation at all? I use primer and setting spray to prepare my skin and help keep my makeup fast. Thinking of trying tinted moisturiser.

I’m mid-40s and just use a CC cream or tinted moisturiser most of the time. Like you though my skin is in fairly good nick (and yes to the Botox!) so I just need something to help even it out at bit and give it a bit of a gentle glow.

I'm 53. Never worn it. I've got good skin, even toned and well cared for and despite my age it luckily still has a sheen/glow to it, helped by several serums and face oil. I also have a little botox. I find a little concealer on my dark circles is fine. I had a make up trial a few months ago and I thought the foundation made me look older and a really hated the way it felt. I wear eyeliner, mascara and lip tint and think I look better and younger that way.

I don’t use foundation anymore. I use NARS SPF 30 pure radiant tinted moisturiser. You can buy at boots online. Lots of shades so shouldn’t turn orange over the day? And then just set it with some light powder on nose and T zone.

There's a trend right now for a very heavy makeup look and I think the full face of foundation is part of that. It might also be a way of recreating that TikTok filter look in real life. You know, the "beaming in from Jupiter" effect.

Doesn't suit me.

Any suggestions for lotions and potions that prepare your skin well and give it a glow are gratefully received.

I find tinted moisturiser is enough, with bronzer. Mine is also NARS.
I also have fairly good skin, I'm aged 42.

ReneBumsWombats · 05/02/2023 12:13

Any suggestions for covering up redness? My nose doesn't have spots or large pores but it does tend to redness and that's really the only place where I think foundation helps...but there must be something better.

I think the trend is the other way tbh. More "natural clean girl" with serum infused skincare foundation hybrids.

Anyway who cares - go for what you like.

The nars moisturiser is lovely.

Yes, redness correcting CC cream try erborian

No you don’t need foundation. Foundation can highlight pores and imperfections and be quite mask like. I think it’s best for people on TV or very special occasions. It’s also probably needed with other heavy make up, eg eyes, contouring.

Either a tinted moisturiser or just a concealer to use in places you need it. Apply and blend it out. Or just a powder to absorb shine.

In the morning I layer vit C serum, hyaluronic acid serum and collagen serum then day moisturiser. I switch out brands, but generally cheap and cheerful from the ordinary or even B&M.
Evening I use vit A (I buy the capsules you're meant to take as a supplement and break them open then apply to my face) then a retinol oil from the ordinary, then night cream.
Occasionally if my skin looks dry I use a little olive oil. All very budget friendly but it works for me and my botox doctor comments how well hydrated and supple my skin is.

Wineloffa · 05/02/2023 12:41

I think as we age, heavy foundations are aging. I’m 43 and have good skin (thank you tretinoin), my daytime make-up is Clarins Double Serum with City Block spf 50 on top which is tinted. Then I use a tiny bit of Laura Mercier loose powder to manage shine (my skin can be a bit oily), then Benefit Blusher and mascara. On my lips I wear Clarins lip oil.

If I’m going out in the evenings, I’ll wear Clinique Even Better Glo Foundation which is very light and makes my skin very glowy.

lurchermummy · 05/02/2023 12:43

I don't wear foundation, I'm 55 and find a BB cream enough, but I'd like something to take the shine off my nose without looking chalky/cakey - any suggestions? I've hear rave reviews of Laura Mercier

SalviaOfficinalis · 05/02/2023 12:48

I like bare minerals complexion rescue tinted moisturiser. One of the few that doesn’t turn orange for me. I put a bit of concealer on my nose and under my eyes too.

kitsuneghost · 05/02/2023 12:48

Its absolutely gine. I rarely wear make up. Even on a night out I don't tend to bother.

BlueKaftan · 05/02/2023 12:52

I mix erborian with Vichy moisturiser. Does the trick.

Appleblum · 05/02/2023 12:56

No. I don't wear foundation on most days, usually just some concealer for my under eyes and around the nose. If you have good skin it's perfectly fine.

Koalacuddles · 05/02/2023 13:03

Erborian cc cream is great. Light coverage and makes my skin look healthy. I found foundation really aging these days!

Tamarindtree · 05/02/2023 13:04

You can make your own tinted moisturiser by blending moisturiser and your foundation together.

I find this prevents oxidisation. You can also add a pump of primer to the mix.

NattyNamechanger · 05/02/2023 13:08

The trend isn't for heavy make up at all!
Most people I know wear very little.
I think the make up looks with oodles of foundations/contour are a specific Instagram/ SM genre.
I tend to turn things orange as I'm combination so I use Eborian BB, it's light and gives a lovely natural finish.

palelavender · 05/02/2023 13:15

I suspect you have pink undertones in your skin and you are repeatedly choosing yellow based foundation. Yellow based foundation on pink toned people always turns a bit orange. If you look dreadful in mustard and warm colours you probably have pink undertones. Have a look at the veins in your wrist - do they look blue (for pink) or green (for yellow)? If you are typical blue eyed, dark haired and very pale skinned Celt you will have pink undertones.

Foundations often give you a clue - anything with rose in the name is likely to be pink based. Some brands tend one way or other quite strongly. It is easier to see the difference if you swatch a batch of colours. Anything described as golden, honey or warm beige is likely to be warm.

I quite like the Bare Minerals fair powder foundation. I can't use the concealer in that brand though because on me it is yellow and looks awful.

I have seen it suggested that people chose the opposite colour to even out their skin tone but as a cool/pink person I look orange or yellow and not in a good way. Ever since I worked this out, buying foundation has become so much easier. That and the fact that using sunblock is so common means that at last there are really pale shades. (The 1970s make up was a nightmare for the pale and pasty. Even makeup dragons on commission used to tell me that they had no foundation even close to my shade because everything seemed to be warm beige.)

I only put it on the bits that need it and with a light hand. Undereye concealer and a bit on my nose is what I used. After a certain age, lighter make up is more youthful. The skin under my eyes is perfect at 58 because it's never gone naked into the world without concealer.

BOOTS52PollyPrissyPants · 05/02/2023 13:16

I have good skin but use Lancome Tint Idole if going out but I have pale skin and use same tone foundation. I use Mabelline concealor on red areas and covers great. It is all about using the same colour foundation and moisturising well before hand.

bussteward · 05/02/2023 13:57

I use Laura Mercier tinted moisturiser diluted further with more moisturiser as it’s quite opaque, but I keep the opacity on the stork marks on the side of my nose – it covers redness on me.

Richvanilla · 05/02/2023 14:02

Primark do this colour correcting green cream, I think it's called Tiger Grass cream? It's been a game changer. I've ditched foundation, just put this on my face, concealer under my eyes and a bit of powder over the top and my face looks better than the actual years spent with crusty, wrong colour, sinking into lines etc foundation. It just looks like my skin but more even.
