I am not going to wear flares… what style of jeans are not dated?

I keep telling myself skinny is a classic style but apparently people wouldn’t be seen dead in them (according to a work colleague)

I like them 🙁🙁🙁

Are slim jeans a slightly more modern style.

what can I wear that’ll work with boots and trainers?

GinBlossom94 · 04/02/2023 11:10

I'm still in skinnies as I always wear higher leg boots over them

Lovemusic33 · 04/02/2023 11:12

I still wear skinny jeans, I hate bootcut/flares, they remind me of when I was 15 😬.

Roominmyhouse · 04/02/2023 11:26

I love flared jeans and bought some last year but I just can’t seem to bring myself to wear them this time of year. Too many flashbacks to wearing my flares in wet weather and then soaking up the water 😆

Might have to crack them out today! But I’m definitely still in camp skinny 99% of the time. Fashionable or not!

abigailsnan · 04/02/2023 11:33

Original 501's had them for years always look good everytime,I buy a pair from a thrift shop every time I go to USA.

I have these. They aren't ankle grazer on me as am short.

I still see a lot of ppl wearing skinny jeans, including young ppl, and in London, so not out in the sticks. So I don't think its really is out as a fashion.

The Princess of Wales is very thin, and dresses like someone very posh, in their 60s….

Dresses like someone "in their 60s"?
What does that mean?
Is there a negative, "dowdy" connotation there?

TizerorFizz · 04/02/2023 12:51

@Maireas
I think there is. The POW looks well groomed though doesn’t she? That’s the point surely? Dress to suit your shape snd age. I’m in my 60s and ultra skinny legging type jeans wouldn’t be in my wardrobe. I think someone who is projecting a smart but casual look doesn’t wear ultra skinnies right now even if they can. Time for a change and wider legs look fashionable now. It’s also a money issue. Primark for example are significantly cheaper than really fashionable brands and the fashionable brands are not promoting or even selling skinnies.

Maireas · 04/02/2023 13:41

Yes, @TizerorFizz - I'm in my 60s, and like many contemporaries (including you!) I like to be stylish, and find a lot of the ageism on these style threads depressing. Emma Thompson is my age and I generally like her style. I think that the Princess of Wales is aiming for classic conservatism, but sometimes misses the mark. She doesn't look 60, just not sharp. I like very slim fit jeans because I'm petite and the baggier styles don't suit. I've never worn ultra skinny, although interestingly a lot of my 6th form girls seem to favour them.

Not at all. I’m almost in my 60s. She dresses in a very ‘safe’ way. No edge. But with a lot of finesse, hence the ‘posh’.

She may be a style icon for some, but it’s not high fashion. It was an observation on my part.

journeyofinsanity · 04/02/2023 21:40

TizerorFizz · 04/02/2023 09:27

The newspaper I read highlighted the Princess of Wales is now wearing slim straight leg jeans. I think it’s just a more mature look. Skinny legging type jeans never looked that great anyway. They said she likes Oliver Bonas jeans but at the moment they have mostly wide leg. Takes me back to the 70s!

POW is hardly a fashion icon. She is very pedestrian in her style. Some of her very formal gowns are stunning but her fat ti day look is verging on dated. She's a very late adopter of styles. They are basically out or have hit very broad mainstream when she starts wearing them. That's why people say she looks older in her style as typically (but not always), older people are slower adopters if new styles as they are resistant to change.

TizerorFizz · 04/02/2023 21:59

@MissingMoominMamma
Of course she does. I bet most people reading this don’t do cutting edge high fashion either! It’s the preserve of the very rich with a need to constantly reinvent themselves and get noticed. Most people wait for haute couture to be sanitized for the high street. However being safe with clothes can lead to a polished look snd is much easier to pull off. Few people can look great in high fashion and where would you wear it? Down the local chippy?

TheDogsMother · 04/02/2023 22:34

I'm dragging myself away from skinnies and now on M & S Harper Cigarette Jeans which are still quite slim. Have a couple of boyfriend type jeans but being short they do swamp me a bit.

Dresses like someone in their 60’s. What does that mean?

I’m 60. I’m definitely not conservative. Does that mean I’ve got to give up my Converse? I bet Kate wears Converse.

I actually said, dresses like someone very posh, in their 60s. Converse are casual, aren’t they?

She has to- I get it. She probably wears much less conservative stuff when off duty, but we rarely get to see that.

To clarify, I’m very close to my 60s, but I don’t do posh, and I’m not stick thin either.

My point was that Kate has a peculiar set of circumstances which dictate how she should dress- stylish, but safe. It’s not very exciting, but she looks great because her clothes are well cut and she’s thin.

Floisme · 05/02/2023 08:30

I think every single woman I've come across (in real life not on here) who won't let go of their skinny jeans has been under 50. I understand why - the very youngest have worn nothing else all their adult lives. Older women have seen it all before - several times over.

Maireas · 05/02/2023 08:33

Quite, @Floisme . We're also more likely to be more confident with our appearance and have worked out what looks good and what doesn't.

It's not "fair". What does "dressing like you're in your 60s" mean?
Dressing like Shirley Ballas? Emma Thompson? Or some sort of stereotypical older woman?

Both of the examples you give are perfect. They are women who dress appropriately for the circumstance. I find, as I have got older, I am more adept at this.

Remember Emma Thompson’s first wedding dress?

Yes, there are some very ‘out there’ 60,70,80,90 year olds, but I find most of my peers to be slightly more conservative in their choices.

A pp’s suggestion of Converse was also perfect- slim jeans with Converse are a safe option.

Nowhere did I say that Kate was dowdy. People who are taking offence- do you think she’s dowdy??

This is a bit humourless. I think missingMoominMama means KM in mufti looks like a younger version of the typical 60 something you see on the Kings Road. Expensively but conservatively dressed in slim jeans, Tods/Gucci loafers and expensive hair and skin. They do lots of Pilates and are vaguely fashionable but never trendy. It’s an upper middle class uniform which of course many 60 something women do not conform to. The KR women look great but dressing like that when you are 40 can make you look older than you are - not that that’s an issue.

Maireas · 05/02/2023 09:21

Yes, I don't have a sense of humour about the constant ageism on the S&B threads.
Maybe your analysis is correct, maybe not.
I have no idea what these "King's Road" women are like. Sounds like another stereotype to me, but you probably know better.

My post wasn’t ageist. I dress a little differently now, to when I was in my 30s, so do my friends. I prefer to see it as the advantage of being 30 years older, than as something negative 🤷‍♀️.

Maireas · 05/02/2023 09:54

It's not negative being older- that is entirely my point.
You can look fantastic at any age. I don't think "dressing like she's 60" was intended as a compliment and I've never been to the King's Road 🤷

MummyJ12 · 05/02/2023 09:56

Wear whatever style of jean suits you best rather than following trends. Coco Chanel was so right when she stated that style never goes out of fashion.
Invest in a good pair though, cheap jeans usually feel and look cheap.
