Colouring hair

I need to colour grey my hair but my hairdresser isn't available. I'm thinking of trying a box dye. Any recommendations for dark thick hair that's quite coarse?
Or should I just wait for my hairdresser to come back because box dye is shit?

Do you have someone who could apply the box dye for you?

Outfor150 · 02/02/2023 23:10

I box dye mine and it looks nice. I use Castings.

Zooeyzo · 02/02/2023 23:52

@CatJumperTwat no it's going to be a one woman job!

I wouldn't do it unless I had someone to help. You'll probably stain everything in sight and still miss a bit of your hair!

Why would she stain everything in sight? Or stain anything? Or miss a bit? Dying your own hair is easy.

I have always had thick coarse hair, I pretty much always use the John Frieda mousse dyes as for me they're easy to apply and give really good coverage. My natural colour is dark brown with a bit of red so I usually go for the dark reds now and had good results with dark and even golden brown when I was younger, can't comment on lighter shades. Boots usually sell them as well as some Superdrugs.

@Belladonna208 good shout I'll pick some up today and give it a go.
Does it drip?

Although you pile it on top of your head (more fun than it sounds), it can drip a little bit, I've found some of the red batches very slighly runnier than others. I usually apply it in the bathroom for this reason, with a big, old, gnarly towel round my shoulders (held together with a clothes peg, very fetching :) and I've also found it really helps to apply vaseline or Nivea or another cream barrier around forehead, nape of the neck and ears).

I've tried loads of different dyes over the years, including one joyously messy experiment with henna, and this has been the easiest to apply I've found so far.

What does your hairdresser do? Semi permanent? Permanent? Highlights? How much grey do you have? If it's just to blend in a few greys and tide you over until you can get to the hairdresser, I would get a L'Oréal Casting box dye. Go for a shade lighter than you think you are and pay attention to the tones (are you aiming for ashy/cool brown or a golden brown or a reddish hue?).
They're very easy and foolproof.

Objectionhearsayspeculation · 03/02/2023 13:30

I have a lot. of few greys especially at the roots and my natural colour is dark brown. I'm currently purple but have been red, auburn and blue all with Schwarzkopf Live. I've tried some of the Olia and Nutrisse but found them messier. If my Dd is around she'll do the back for me if not I use a dye brush to make sure I don't miss any. I also do Dd1 with their real red.

Zooeyzo · 03/02/2023 13:43

@WhereAreWeNow I normally get permanent to cover greys. I get a lot at the front especially under my hair. I've got cool tone hair I think. It's very dark hair but not black. Dark brown indian hair which is very thick and stubborn so not the easiest to colour

@Zooeyzo you could try Casting but you might find it's not enough coverage for you. I use Majirel permanent dye which covers my greys pretty well.

Or could you get one of those root sprays to hide the grey until your hairdresser can do it?

olympicsrock · 03/02/2023 19:44

I do my own with castings and have similar pattern of greys to you. Choose a shade lighter than your own hair to start with.
Wear an old top. Line your basin with a plastic bag, open. Go round your hairline ears with thick moisturizer. Get extra plastic gloves ( 2 pairs better than one) . Start with the greyest bits at your temples , then move to your parting , only getting the dye on your roots. Leave the dye on the roots for 25 mins. Coat the rest of your hair only for the last 5 mins.

can you find a you tube video?

Zooeyzo · 03/02/2023 23:24

@WhereAreWeNow the sprays don't really look good at all on my hair. It really shows and looks dull.
Do you just use one majirel colour? Or do you mix?

@olympicsrock good idea on the YouTube video.

Is L'Oreal Preference any good for very white hairs?
