Anyone guessed their own 'colours'?

I was thinking about getting my colours 'done' (posted about this recently), but I'm wondering if any of you managed to figure it out yourselves?
There seem to be so many seasonal/tonal etc. systems and it's not exactly cheap! I've been reading about it for several months now and I always 'knew' cool colours suit me better, and I'm pretty sure I'm a winter type.
Then I've read about several women being surprised by the results??

If you compare white and cream against your face, and then olive green and pine green, that should confirm whether or not you are in fact cool toned. If you are then you will be summer or winter. Winter is brighter bolder colours compared to
summers more muted tones. You can see this from googling the HOC colour wheel.
what you probably won’t be able to tel without proper draping though, is the subset of the season.

Thanks @CatsEatDogs ! Yes I am definitely the winter type. I've been trying to pinpoint the subseason myself, in fact one of the reasons I'm not sure if I should trust someone to do my colours is they all seem to differ.
There's House of Colour that looks mostly at the skin, Colour Me Beautiful that also looks at hair and eyes and independent stylists.
I would go to HOC but it's sadly out of my budget at £220. The others I worry they would put me near autumn due to brown eyes and hair combo, which I saw some stylists do (my hair is ash brown and eyes are cool black-brown, fair pink skin).
I think I'm just the regular, 'true' winter type (I think HOC calls it jewel?), but all these different subtypes confuse me and make me wonder how much of it is just made up. I can only do silver jewellery, can wear black and white and jewel tones. I wonder if it would be a waste of money to go, or perhaps I would be shocked to discover I am a spring instead!

I’m not sure if I would bother then, it does sound like you know which colours suit you already. I had mine done years ago and while I loved it, and think it was totally worth it, I don’t bother about my “best” colours anymore, I just ensure im
wearing winter colours all the time. I’m technically a jewel winter but I don’t care about that anymore and rarelY wear the bright jewel colours

CatsEatDogs · 02/02/2023 17:10

Also, it does sound like you’ve pretty much cracked it. If your skin is pinky then you’re def cool toned, I think someone would have that wrong if they put you as autumn or spring

I must admit I wasted some money for an 'online analysis' only to be told I'm a deep autumn! I know it's not right but it made me doubt myself. There's no warmth in my colouring. Olive green makes my fair pink skin look like dirt.

Part of me thinks I'd get told I'm autumn or near autumn just because I don't have blue eyes...

It's interesting to see you stopped following the 'rules', I have to say I don't think I'd stop wearing other colours I like just because they are not my 'type'. I saw lots o people swearing by colour analysis though.

The thing is, if you are curious about your season, you will always wonder. So on that basis I would just go ahead and book an analysis. House of Colour is focused on seasons and Colour Me Beautiful is more tonal and not directly comparable to House of Colour.

I had my colours done by House of Colour back in 2013. I thought it was likely that I would be a summer or possibly an autumn. I turned out to be a Brown Summer which is a summer subtype closest to autumn. But it isn't just about being categorised. It's about seeing the drapes and the colours. What is good for you and why in clothing and make up.

I would do your research and find an experienced consultant.

I found it really useful and the vast majority of my clothing is in my summer colours.

I'm not sure I trust the process.

Years ago I was labelled an Autumn, yet these days, with my definitely pink complexion, I think I look better with cool tones, like mauves and aubergines.

Most lipsticks turn orange on me, and I have to hunt high and low for one that flatters - that would be the mauves or purple / plums, or if I'm feeling daring a blue-toned red.

I have blue eyes and fair pink skin with freckles and fairish / auburn hair that blondes a bit in the summer. Now going a bit grey which muddies the waters somewhat.

I wasn't able to work it out myself but I have a trusted friend who explained my colours to me in a basic way and I've been able to take it from there. Do you have anyone you know who has her colours right and can therefore help you find yours? My friend is quite artistic, I'm sure that helped, and she was able to show me the difference between a winter yellow and a summer one.

Re stopping following the “rules”. I think it’s one of those things that you can take what you want from. So for me I realised that I can’t wear warm colours at all and I also realised why small ditsy prints didn’t look right on me - because winters are all about contrast and there is none in a ditsy print. So it was massively useful and I’m glad I did it, but the difference between wearing my “wow”’colours and the rest of the winter pallette can be negligible. Also, being a jewel winter means that the bright colours suits me but at this point in my life, I also love neutrals, I just make sure they’re from the winter pallette.

Potaytoes5 · 02/02/2023 17:45

@dudsville I don't have anyone near me who could help, but I am an artist myself so definitely can tell the difference between warm and cool shades! It is a bit more difficult to look at myself but I think I have it pretty close already.

@balconylife I feel that too. There's some science behind it, but ultimately what colours suit someone is down to personal preference.
