Is it normal to not be interested in expensive products ?

I've never spent hundreds of pounds on designer clothes, jewellery, skincare, makeup etc. I've always shopped at Primark and high street stores, bought cheaper perfume apart from the odd one for Christmas. I don't own any expensive/designer jewellery and have always bought cheap and basic makeup/skincare. The only thing I can think of that I've spent money on was a Dyson hairdryer.
Majority of my friends buy EVERYTHING designer and I've just never been interested in any of it?

This is such a strange question. If course it's normal, for lots of people

BarbaraofSeville · 02/02/2023 13:17

I think its more unusual to only have friends who buy EVERYTHING designer.

Who can afford that?

Peckhaminn · 02/02/2023 13:18

Honestly, they all buy designer shoes, jewellery, spent hundreds on makeup, face cream etc. I've just always seen it as a waste of money.

I know what you mean, other than a brief teenage period when I only wanted a certain brand of trainers, I'm the same. I love the feeling of finding a bargain, labels aren't my thing at all (although that said I've never had the budget for it to be an issue!)

I mostly buy unbranded food as well, but should probably have shares in Coca Cola the amount of Diet Coke I get through!

Peckhaminn · 02/02/2023 13:21

@StephanieandKate Even food I'm a cheap skate! Apart from not being able to live without Lurpak butter!

My clothes are from Next and Primark, I never look at designer stuff.
I don’t wear jewellery any more.
My only expense is a mid range price moisturiser

Mercurial123 · 02/02/2023 14:22

Everyone's priorities and budgets are different. I don't drink alcohol or go to expensive restaurants. I enjoy fashion and buy less but good quality items.

Krakenes · 02/02/2023 14:36

Spending lots or spending nothing is completely normal? What are you worried about not being ‘normal’? Do you often feel a bit different to others? Nothing wrong with it, people just like different things.

MorrisZapp · 02/02/2023 14:40

When you go to Primark, are you the only person there?

BHRK · 02/02/2023 16:19

I think it’s perfectly normal. As above, I rarely eat out and prefer to spend money on good clothes that last. But each to their own?

DuchessOfDisco · 02/02/2023 16:24

People like different things.
that’s normal.

I won’t ever buy an expensive white t shirt. I love wearing white but stain them all the time so I only ever get them from primark. I don’t buy expensive food - I have no interest in fancy restaurants.
I do however love a designer handbag, but I have some that are over 20years old and still look amazing. I just couldn’t bring myself to use a primark handbag. I’d rather buy one designer one every few years that will last
each to their own though

GrumpyPanda · 02/02/2023 16:52

Totally reasonable with regard to skincare and suchlike. There's such heavy use of vanity pricing in the sector, where demand is actually higher at higher product prices compared to lower prices that would also be sustainable based on production costs. Also, I gather quite often near-identical products are sold as expensive brands and no-name discounter products.

EllaPaella · 02/02/2023 19:01

I prefer to spend a bit more on quality clothes that have lasting power and good materials (but definitely can't afford designer) same with shoes.
Beauty products, cheap and cheerful all the way with the exception of my Estee Lauder foundation.

earsup · 02/02/2023 19:06

I got some Elemis skin products as a gift...really dont notice the difference over my usual neutrogena hydra gel which i prefer...
On another note, I used to teach marketing etc, did visits with students to expensive cosmetic houses and they explained that about 80% of purchase price is spent on the packaging, jar, promotion, ads with super models etc. So your £100 face cream is really only a £20 product !

I own one designer dress, and that cost less than £50. I don't aspire to designs wear , it's either covered in logos or so weird it shouts look at me I can afford to dress this badly

Like this but I realise this isn't designer designer

Really? You think classic Armani, MaxMara, Joseph, The Row, Paul Smith etc. are covered in logos and are attention seeking?

Goatinthegarden · 03/02/2023 05:18

I don’t care about the brand name on my clothes, but I do like them to be well made out of good quality fabrics. I will pay more for something that feels like it will last a long time. I try to avoid fast fashion.

I’m the same with most things I purchase. I’d rather buy something once than have to keep replacing it.

Mrcpy · 03/02/2023 06:42

Yes it’s entirely normal.

Your friends are normal too.

What’s a bit unusual is that you’ve ended up in this friendship group - unless, of course, you have other things in common.

I flit between the two extremes. Was obsessed with designer last year. This year I’d rather save up for something else, but I still like looking/talking about high end products, but I’ve lost my desire to buy.
