Suit to die for

I've unexpectedly got a small inheritance. Aside from the sensible stuff I will do with it (savings, home improvements), I'd like a new trouser suit for work. I'd like something slightly cool/ funky but not too outrageous, as I have a corporate job . Budget £800-£1,000 all in. I'm small (5'3 and size 6-8), prefer flat shoes and slim fits. Can anyone give me some ideas? Years ago I had a lovely suit from Joseph but I fear they are out of budget now.

Twisted Tailor were recommended to me, the suits are a bit different but well below your budget though, so might not be what you’re looking for.

Tartifletti · 02/02/2023 00:54

@handsoffate I'm not snobby about price but those are not quite what I am after - a bit too glammed up for me to pull off.

@handsoffate thank you for replying though.

What colour?

mrssmiling · 02/02/2023 06:53

Paul Smith? Great tailoring and around your budget.

Gruelle · 02/02/2023 06:55

Oh … I’d be tempted to increase your budget and have a suit made for you. But otherwise,

You could choose a jacket and matching trousers from Raey at Matches. Wonderful quality and fabrics.

Or … If you’re quick you could find a jacket and trousers in the MaxMara sale. (Photo)

This Studio Nicholson jacket would be below budget as it’s in the sale - there’ll be co-ordinating trousers.

Tbh there are countless designers offering reasonably excellent suits - the main thing is to ensure you’re paying for well crafted clothes, rather than a name. (Presumably if you wanted a specific designer you wouldn’t be asking here?)

Also The Fold.

MariahsBaubles · 02/02/2023 07:14

For they money I'd go to liberty and see their personal shopper / stylist. My friend uses them and she always looks beautifully turned out. The service is free but they only do it if you're spending over £5k I think

Gruelle · 02/02/2023 07:16

Less traditional, Acne Studios trousers are beautifully made and last forever - so I’d certainly be happy to buy a suit from them.

£1000 can be a bit of an awkward amount for jacket and trousers (in the UK, at least,) unless you’re buying in the sales - otherwise it might mean compromising on either fabric or design.

CMOTDibbler · 02/02/2023 07:21

The Fold. Their suits are gorgeous, and if you go to their shop they will pin it and send it for alterations to sleeves and hems

Tartifletti · 02/02/2023 12:09

Thank you all for the helpful replies! Quite like the idea of Acne in principle, although they seem keen on the oversized look which doesn't work on me (sadly). But much happy window-shopping, and hopefully some actual shopping, awaits.

I'd try Paul Smith - a little over your budget but beautiful quality and with nice details.

TheOpenRoad · 04/02/2023 06:19

The Fold, I have a couple of suit jackets, skirts, tops and it's great quality. Libby London also has some similar suits

Gruelle · 04/02/2023 06:48

This is what you actually want, OP:

casely-hayford.com/womens-bespoke/

Other tailors are available, of course …

eurochick · 04/02/2023 06:51

The Fold has beautiful suits this season.

Gruelle · 04/02/2023 09:34

On another thread someone is planning to wear a rose pink dress from The Fold as a supremely elegant bridesmaid.

It’s a perfect choice for that particular occasion. But honestly, if you presented me with a The Fold suit as a gift I would be really quite despondent. Even when I did spend my life swishing around London in an expensive suit I would never have worn anything so ‘nice’, and ladylike. Surely I’m not the only woman who wants even staid professional clothes to be a bit … crunchier?

(That sleek style looks lovely on other people, of course.)

Gonegrey31 · 04/02/2023 11:26

I've got a navy blue velvet trouser suit from Cefinn, I absolutely love it, it can be dressed up with camisole and heels or down with a T shirt and trainers...lots of jacket and trouser combinations in the range.

Mercurial123 · 04/02/2023 11:35

Try Yoox

I was going to say Joseph. I’d hold out for the sales or scour the Outnet for something.

TheDogsMother · 04/02/2023 11:40

Are you anywhere near Brighton. There's a great men's and women's tailor there called Gresham Blake.

TizerorFizz · 04/02/2023 13:25

Toteme, Bella Freud, Raey - look at Matches fashion. Or go Max Mara, the fold or me&em. You will need a lot more for the delights of McQueen or YSL.

Gruelle · 04/02/2023 13:59

You might find it fun to go back and read the thread, @TizerorFizz Grin.

FeelinSpendy · 04/02/2023 14:06

I came on here to recommend the Fold but see I’ve been beaten to it a few times!

TizerorFizz · 04/02/2023 14:25

@Gruelle
Ha! Great minds think alike! I had missed that earlier. Gabriella Hearst do great suits, but at a price!

DD wears LK Bennett suits. Black as she has to, but trousers can be mixed with their trademark “Chanel” tweeds or the matching jacket. That rings the changes. I bought her first LKB suit for her in 2015 and it’s still going string.

Gruelle · 04/02/2023 14:52

Black …? I was all Jil Sander and Antonio Fusco … I looked epic. Just didn’t love the work …

Somehow ended up in an occupation that ought to offer endless dressing up opportunities - but no one does.

I have a bit of a crush on Gabriela Hearst - she makes running a design house seem revolutionary.

Actually, OP don’t spend you money right now - keep it until Phoebe Philo returns …
