Im increasingly drawn to bohemian style I think but where to start? I feel the cold, have a toddler and primary age DC. Am 5 2” and a size 10 so not the tall slim boho body but I do have long shaggy hair! Any ideas that aren’t fancy dress please?!

Have you looked at Joe Brown?

DuchessOfSausage · 02/02/2023 16:48

Who is your style icon?

Goldandpurplezebra · 02/02/2023 16:57

Some stuff from urban outfitters is nice...

How about Aztec stuff?...

There is nothing bohemian about Joe Brown. I think vintage shops would be your best bet. You could mix styles, and eras, up a bit.

DuchessOfSausage · 02/02/2023 17:17

@LovePuffs , I regularly someone local to me out and about. She's about 5', maybe shorter, not skinny, and she definitely has a look.

She wears midi skirts and a parka type coat, and usually a hat. She looks great.

I'd have a look at Gudrun Sjoden (sp), Anthropolgie, Ghost,Jigsaw and Mint Velvet, and high street brands like H&M, New Look and Zara.

FindingMeno · 02/02/2023 22:16

Charity shopping is a good idea.
Look for natural fibres, earth tones and neutrals, and build from there.

Cantonet · 02/02/2023 23:40

Look at Free People.
The styling, ideas & decide what outfits would be most suitable for you.
Then copy them.
There was quite a bit of bohemian styling around last summer. Pale washed denim, cheesecloth shirts, waistcoats, long cotton patterned skirts, cotton dresses, beaded necklaces etc.
Monsoon used to be good for this sort of thing but it all looks a bit synthetic these days. H&M is normally good for Summer clothes & sometimes M&S has the odd gem. I love Jigsaw but it's definitely not very bohemian.

midsomermurderess · 02/02/2023 23:44

I think natural fabrics, linen, cotton would be good to layer, maybe some velvet, tweed. Layered and loose, a range of colours, some muted, a flash of jewel. I'm getting a bit of a picture of Helena Bonham Carter. I have no idea where she shops.

Pigtailsandall · 03/02/2023 09:59

I was quite into the boho style in my early 30s, but I didn't want to go full-on hippy, so I got some good basics and then added a boho element to it - for example, simple black t-shirt and jeans, but a long floaty kimono coat. Or super-patterned and funky skirt with again a simple t-shirt.

Start by what you have and add an element or two of what you feel drawn towards and see how you like it. A fun, slouchy tassel bag could be nice and practical with kids, or some bright shoes.

NightOwlNotEarlyBird · 03/02/2023 13:58

American Eagle and & Other Stories have nice boho style summer stuff, the flowy tops and dresses type.

Tartifletti · 03/02/2023 14:24

There's a small brand called Om Baby that does lovely printed jumpsuits and dresses, as well as cord trousers in winter. Might be worth a look.

FayCarew · 03/02/2023 14:48

@Tartifletti , I didn't expect to like their stuff but it looks right up my street. Thanks for the link.

LovePuffs · 04/02/2023 04:02

I had a mailing catalogue from monsoon and loved some of their floaty/embroidered dresses but all were polyester and about £100! Like Om Baby thank you. I love Newbie but have tried their dresses and they are like sacks on me, I’m not skinny but perhaps a bit petite. I don’t really have a style icon but would like to be comfortable but colourful but classy/stylish!

@Goldandpurplezebra sorry I don’t like either of those!
thank you though!

@Pigtailsandall yes! I have a lovely silk shirt kimono but never know what to wear it with (except as a cover up on holiday) so will try that with flared jeans! Thanks!

@DuchessOfSausage Oh actually I did LOVE everything that Judy in Dead To Me wore-does that count?! I particularly liked how she wore belts with dresses but could never find a belt that did up small enough but without a stupid long dangly leftover bit!

If you can get a bit of time in TK Maxx, there’s great stuff in at the minute. I got a huge cotton Boden scarf / wrap fur a tenner. Thick embroidered fabric. Depends on the branch, as well I suppose! But worth a look.

TheDead · 05/02/2023 10:11

I think there seems to be a few definitions of 'bohemian' floating about on this thread.

From what the OP has posted I think she means floaty, embellished, embroiderd stuff rather than that brown & sludge colored new age style. So based on that assumption I would suggest looking at brands like

Noa Noa
Anthropologie
Monsoon
Zara

If you are clever you can begin to build a wardrobe with this sort of aesthetic bit by bit by adding to it with sales purchases. It's an eclectic look so not really one you can just buy in a single haul anyway. You can enhance plainer basics with accessories/ jewellery etc to get you going.

It's a fab look if you get it right

what is ‘new age style’?

Divebar2021 · 05/02/2023 11:15

I think you’re throwing yourself into a search without really defining what you mean by Boho. There are more versions of that than you think - for example there’s the California version ( flared jeans, toe rings and blonde hair ) which is possibly what you’re thinking then theres a more British version which is a bit more Pre - Raphaelite. Think of Florence Welch… (quite diaphanous and floaty ) and then possibly a more literary style which I see in cords and velvets and a beret. Any thoughts on that?
