NAIL ADVICE ANYONE - SHOULD GEL NAILS BREAK THIS QUICKLY?

I finally took the plunge and got gel nails, but within 5 days four on the right hand had broken off and the gel was coming away, and so I went back and she redid them, but after 2 days the gel has peeled off one of them completely. They look really bumpy and rubbish - should they last better than this - I am a SAHM so do routine housework, but I change a lot of nappies as I have 2 in them, so use a lot of antibac gel and nappy cream and sometimes clean the kitchen without rubber gloves on - would this be why they have gone wrong?

I have gel and I am a childminder, so my hands are constantly in water/cream/wipes etc. I did have a problem to start with but now they last for 2-3 weeks, they need infilling because they seem to grow so fast!

My own nails are so weak and don't grow, I know gel only makes them worse but at least I have decent nails all the time now.

They tell me to wear gloves ALL the time, but if you don't you must make sure that you dry them very carefully and individually, or water seeps underneath and they lift off.

I also tried UV nails and silk wraps for a while, useless and expensive!

i would consider acrylic instead- gel just doesn't suit some people- i find acrylic more hard wearing- and i personally think they look better because there are no air bubbles (no matter how good the technician you always get some with gel)

I keep mine a respectable length and always have them painted (even if its just a french manicure) and mine last with 5 kids and working full time and typing on mn a LOT for over 3 weeks before needing infils! If i do anything silly like use them as a screwdriver - I know!!! then a repair has to be done- but mine are pretty good at lasting- also the more infils you have the stronger they get!

Acrylic is more hard wearing, because it is thicker, I too, use mine as a screwdriver occasionally! I prefer gel because it is thinner and less artifical looking. I never get any bumps or bubbles in mine.

I though you were supposed to have them removed every so often rather than continuously infill?

Do you have tips put on first, or just gel?

thanks for these posts - I think I may ask for acrylic then. I had tips put on too - have lost another 2 nails today.

As far as im aware problems tend to be related to the nail technician.

I used a local beauty salon for around 6/7 years and was never able to go beyond 2 weeks for infills.. and even then many a time I needed a new set every 2 weeks and this was PRIOR to lo's. Then once pregnant it was put down to hormones etc.

Anyway I now use nails inc and tbh I haven't looked back since. I also have 2 lo's (1 year old and 2.6 yr old) and change aroound 14 nappies a day, constantly cleaning potties etc. and I have gel nails and they last me 5 weeks/4 weeks or 3 weeks if I want them infilling.

I have just opted for an everlasting polish which involves gel being applied direct to the nail minus a tip and 9 days later they are still going well....My technician says that you shouldn't notice a difference between gel/acrylic and both don't harm your nail, its how they are removed that does ie soaking is the correct way to remove.

preggersagain...bubbles with gel nails..??..no matter who the technicial is... I NEVER have bubbles....

forgot to add, I would go back to your technician and tell them of your issues and concerns. A good one would rectify the problem no questions asked. They should see you through for a few weeks at least.

Nails inc are expensive but imo (and I have been to quite a few places..) they are brillaint and rectify any concerns I have without question.

glad to hear that if they are done properly I cam still go on as normal - have lost another 3 today. I think I will cut my losses and go to another salon as she has already mended these once.

went to a new salon today and had a lovely lovely experience - thanks chaps - you helped me to sort it out.

keep an eye to the new nails and any probs go back...I know its easier said than done BUT given the cost of these things you shouldn't expect anything less.

Nials inc actually called me up a week after my last set to check all was still ok. Brill service imo.
What did you opt for this time...?

BitTiredNow · 13/02/2008 19:50

I had gels and tips - with a really swanky buff afterwards - they said if it went wrong to go back and they would be replaced free - but even as the new lady was doing it, I could tell she was much better than the first one. Thanks for your posts!!!

Prior to this set, I had gels with tips. Hopefully they will last longer. xx
