Cuticle oil - do you use one?

Lottapianos · 21/01/2023 12:29

And if so, would you recommend it? I have very dry nails and hands, and often get dry bits of skin around my nails. I use handcream regularly and wear rubber gloves for washing up but it doesn't seem to be enough

Any cuticle / nail oil recommendations? Ta

When I use almond oil regularly (twice a day) it definitely does make a difference, I use the one from the Body Shop that comes in a pen.

botemp · 21/01/2023 12:40

I use one by Manucurist but I just use it because I like the shine it gives my nails, not sure it does anything more than a hand cream or vaseline would do. Have you tried a hand cream with urea, that's been noticeably different to just a rich hand cream to me to keep dryness and hangnails at bay (and some eczema in my case).

007DoubleOSeven · 21/01/2023 12:41

Honestly I've tried them all and all sorts of moisturisers including old favourites like working hands. A small tin of vaseline by my bed and use once or twice a day is most effective and much cheaper!

KangarooKenny · 21/01/2023 12:48

I use a cuticle oil, recommended on here recently , when the skin around my nails was sore during this cold weather. No amount of hand creams helped, the cuticle oil did.

Lndnmummy · 21/01/2023 13:36

I use them religiously. Essies one js great but my favourite is the cuticle balm by nail envy.

AlwaysFoldingWashing · 21/01/2023 13:37

Yes it has made a huge difference to my nails/ I like CND Solar Oil and burts bees lemon one

And what was it called?

Been using sweet almond oil for 28 years. I buy a 250ml bottle from Holland and Barrett every few years

MuttsNutts · 21/01/2023 15:07

Burts Bees Lemon Cuticle Butter. It’s the bee’s knees 🐝

i was dubious because I don’t rate their lip balms but it really is excellent and smells lush.

It definitely works.

Iwasntgettingasandwich · 21/01/2023 15:15

I don't use one but when I did mt cuticles were lovely and I didn't get any hangnails. I can't remember what it was but it was definitely just a simple almond oil type like a PP mentioned.

Figroll16 · 21/01/2023 16:54

I started using cuticle oil around 3 months ago -my nails look so much tidier now
I just use cheap ones off eBay -ones that are a twist pen with brush

Have heard great things about this before, thanks

Isn't Vaseline just a barrier that doesnt actually nourish your skin?

Flexitol hand and cuticle cream

Daddio

Vaseline

SkisThePianist · 21/01/2023 18:02

I like CND Solar Oil - I buy the packs with 3 x 3.7ml bottles in - that way I can keep them all over. I have one on my desk, one by the bed, one in the bathroom, one in my bag etc. I think pretty much any oil will do though. I have rosehip oil that I use on my face from time to time and I sometimes use that instead.

Definitely more moisturising for cuticles than just hand cream. I've tried the cuticle butters too but I personally prefer oils as I find they absorb better.

95percentcocoa · 21/01/2023 18:24

Sally Hansen cuticle oil is excellent- both my cuticles and nail strength have improved beyond recognition since I started using it.

Fairyliz · 21/01/2023 19:32

I’m another one who just buys some oil off eBay, something like sweet almond oil or grape seed oil. I massage it in whilst I’m watching tv and my nails are really strong now.

Craghopper1 · 21/01/2023 20:04

Margaret Dabbs nourishing nail and cuticle serum. It's witch craft in a bottle. Makes your nails look healthier as well as intensively moisturising. I'm a repeat purchaser!

LadyOfTheCanyon · 21/01/2023 20:08

The thing that made a difference for me was Fish oil capsules and vitamin E supps.

Topical creams make very little difference to my hands ( as opposed to my face : weird) but supplements worked a treat.

HundredMilesAnHour · 21/01/2023 20:11

I put on Cuccio cuticle oil and Aesop hand cream (and Palmer's cocoa butter on my feet) when I get into bed every night. I randomly use hand cream during the day but always do my bedtime ritual.

benonest · 21/01/2023 20:15

Isn't Vaseline just a barrier that doesnt actually nourish your skin?

No it's not just a barrier, and because of its properties it's a good occlusive moisturiser very effective for especially dry skin.

benonest · 21/01/2023 20:16

With cotton gloves worn overnight it's unbeatable, IMO.

'No amount of hand creams helped, the cuticle oil did.'

CND, but I assume any will do.

Tilllly · 21/01/2023 21:06

Lush flutter butter

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 21/01/2023 23:30

I don't personally ( but I do use handcream regularly throughout the day as I'm an NHS Clinician Frequent Handwasher )

For my DD:
one from Wilko (I think the Esscence one )
Nails Inc with a glass dropper rather than a brush
Beekman 1802 nail cuticle balm

She alternates these , keeps a balm in her bag etc.
She had lovely nails <envy>
