Does anyone else cut their own hair?

I started doing mine in lockdown, it was below shoulder length and just needed a straight across trim. DH did the bits I couldn't see.

Anyway, I've progressed and now do my own bob. It's actually really easy once you get used to the angles in the mirror.

I've always hated going to the hairdressers-i hate sitting and looking at myself in the mirror, hate the uncomfortable basins and the small talk and I especially hate the cost of it at the end. I'm not sure I'll ever go back!

Now I know my hair style isn't particularly stylish, it could probably be considered a 'Karen' but I like it

Anyone else DIY?

Mine looks a bit wind swept but this is after I took two inches off the length and attempted to layer it after it being the same length. Looks like I took a bit too much off at the back and a chunk is missing. Oops! I'm trying to learn how to thin out my fringe too.
As I have no real style and a natural wave I dont feel I need it perfect.
Yours looks very well done, very healthy looking too.

You're look amazing!! I was thinking in investing in some thinning shears to help blend the layers maybe that would work for your fringe?

Not sure about amazing! I think if I lived in a city or had a good job I wouldn't dare, but I'm out in the sticks where no one really worries about their appearance.
I might just grow the fringe out,I've had one for 30 years, will save me trying to thin!

dontgobaconmyheart · 15/01/2023 17:33

Yes, although I always have. I've never been to the hairdresser and have never wanted to (am mid thirties).

I wear my hair fairly long - sometimes if I get bored I cut just above the shoulders- but I think there's a lot less hanging on the accuracy in that situation anyway so even if I did somehow mess up it wouldn't be noticeable or anything I couldn't fix. I'm not saying a hairdresser couldn't do something better or more interesting, and am certain they could but I do like my natural hair, it suits how I dress and it's in nice condition thank to never having dyed it either.

Your hair looks great OP. Think of the money we're saving!

NeedToKnow101 · 15/01/2023 17:37

Yea been cutting mine since lockdown. I'm always chopping bits out of it 😂

OriginalUsername2 · 15/01/2023 17:45

I have done for years on my own thin hair but during lockdown I learned a lot more cutting skills from YouTube like layers, thinning, fringes. I even do my teen’s very thick hair now. It saves so much money.

SomeCommonThing · 15/01/2023 17:46

I've always cut my own hair. I'm trying to grow it long again and it's just below my shoulders, I drag it all forward into a ponytail and cut it that way. I also trim my own fringe and shape it round my face.
I've always done it, I've rarely been able to afford a hairdresser and I hate sitting there under the lights staring at myself in the mirror 😂
Luckily I'm quite grungy in style and have dark green hair so even if it looks bad I can more or less pull it off.

imnotthatkindofmum · 15/01/2023 17:46

Always. Been doing ponytail cuts fit years. I only go to the hairdresser if my friend is doing a discount! I actually prefer it when I cut it. Most recently I did a butterfly but a la Brad Mondo. I love it!

I have no pics though.

imnotthatkindofmum · 15/01/2023 17:46

Butterfly cut.

CheeseDreamsTonight · 15/01/2023 17:47

I cut mine for all the same reasons. Hate going to the hairdresser, it's long and wavy so I can do easy layers without having to be too precise. If it goes wrong, I'll just cut more off!

Loads of excellent tutorials out there.

Summer2424 · 15/01/2023 17:51

Hi @Mumsfret1976 the cut looks professional 👌 gorgeous hair btw!

Butterfly cut.

I was going to say the same. It looks like the butterfly cut.

yogz1976 · 15/01/2023 17:53

I have always coloured my own hair and started cutting my own hair about 8 years ago after a negative experience at the hairdressers. I've saved a ton of money, don't have to make boring small talk with a stranger and get the style I want.

Mumsfret1976 · 15/01/2023 17:56

I'm late to the party by the sounds of it! One of the few benefits to come out of lockdown, I never would have started doing my own otherwise.

I just can't believe how easy it is to do. I think the key is a good pair of scissors.

Off to Google the butterfly cut, not heard of that.

I’ve never cut my own hair other than when I was about 7 and decided it was the best way of removing a fly that had gotten smushed in it 😂🙈 that was a lovely chunk! My mum was fuming.
Do you have proper hairdressing scissors or just hack away with the kitchen ones?!
I’m not sure I’d bother really although I’m far from precious about my hair, I like going to the hairdressers - it’s guaranteed time out of the house where I can sit and do fuck all, totally uninterrupted by irritating family questions 😂 I usually just sit there and say she can do what she wants with it, I really don’t care!

lindyloo57 · 15/01/2023 18:44

I've been trimming my hair since lockdown, I never enjoyed the hairdressers, I have long straight hair not quite reaching my bra straps at the back, I have some light layers around the face, I'd like to know when you do the ponytail cut, how to avoid the layers to short around the face, I did it last week only took 1/2 inch off, I'm glad I took so little off, as they were a little short around the face. I have a fringe, so my layers start further back, this could be why this happened, most youtubers I follow doing this cut don't have a fringe.

StrikeandRobin · 15/01/2023 18:53

I’ve been cutting mine since the first lockdown & it’s pretty good.
At least I now don’t feel disappointed and ripped off for paying £££ when it didn’t come out how I asked for it.

I did just do the butterfly cut for the first time. I decided I was sick of my mid back length hair and now it sits just on my shoulders and I hate it. The length, not the style.

Ladyofthelake53 · 18/01/2023 23:50

I cut my own hair, its not far off waist length and really thick. I do the unicorn cut off youtube and then use thinning scissors. Cant afford salon prices

Ladyofthelake53 · 18/01/2023 23:52

Also have a full fringe and cut that myself as well. I use proper hsirdressing scissors and thinning shears

AllOfThemWitches · 18/01/2023 23:53

Not a chance, I was thrilled when salons reopened.
