Make up help please...I'm hopeless

I'm 45. I didn't used to wear make up in my youth, rarely even wore it to go out. I could "get away" with it back then.

But, I'm older and fatter and really need a helping hand, the trouble is I'm clueless.

I have a No 7 foundation that doesn't seem to last more than a couple of hours. A No 7 loose translucent powder that just makes me look powdery 🤣 . My ideas of how to apply are from the 90s.

Please, can someone advise me or point me in the direction of somewhere that can.

I would take myself off to one of the counters, like Bobbi Brown and ask them to make you over, you can book in with them, its free, tell them what you want and what look you want to achieve. I like brands such as Kiko, I find I can normally pick up something from there, I love their eye crayons (which are just like the BB ones but cheaper )

Try a primer under your foundation. For budget ranges, the Rimmel one is nice. I’m not a fan of powder, because it makes me feel cakey.
A cream blusher in the right place (YouTube for tips) will help.
Are your brows neat? A shape and tint will have you looking instantly tidier.
Mascara, lipstick and perhaps a fairly nude eyeshadow, will all help.

I’d go to a make up counter for advice. I paid for a make up lesson at Charlotte tilbury and you get the payment as credit for products. I was very pleased with the lesson! Mac do this as well.

Sadly I live in the arse end of nowhere, so no local make up counter since Debenham closed. John Lewis around 1hr15 minutes drive away so will have to maje the effort to go there

Having not bothered with all things make up, my brows are actually really good (never been over plucked, or indeed plucked.. ) I do get them threaded sometimes which makes a big difference. They're quite dark, so never had them tinted.

I will try the rimmed primer, I got one by The Ordinary but it didn't really work with the foundation.

Does your skin actually need the foundation and powder? I only use them when I’ve got spots or lots of redness. I concentrate on defining my eyes (brows, mascara, eyeliner) and a bit of blusher makes me look less pasty.

I was the same op! I couldn't spend money on cosmetics when I don't have a clue. But then I got free Benefit box when I spent +£ at Next. In it was a makeup bag, pore primer, 2 mascaras, a brow pencil, Hula mini, brow setter and some samples. It's all small bottles but I now know I need the primer and the Hula to go with my basic maxfactor foundation so will buy them in bigger bottles

I think a little made up mixed benefit box with minis will give you a good idea of what you're looking for if you can't get to a counter x

She is really good, as are Lisa Eldridge tutorials for a more classic look.

Bemyclementine · 15/01/2023 15:13

I have rather rosy cheeks and feel like I need a foundation to even my skin out a bit.

@twoandcooplease That sounds great, is that something I can just buy clueless

I like a classic look. My eyelashes are crap but I'm never going to be a lashes and nails person

Just get a decent mascara then. Clinique’s long pretty lashes is good for creating volume and length.
