Beauty products & expiry dates

I knew beauty products reach a point where they're starting to fall apart etc but most people have an old tub of face moisturiser stuffed in a bag or drawer somewhere..the odd lip stick /face powder too. Well, I just discovered today that beauty products infact all have expiry dates written on them (see attached pic) it's the number of months indicated from the date of opening. I rushed to check my foundation and lo and behold it's expired! no way am I throwing it though as I'm not even halfway through it yet Grin.

I bet you're all going to tell me you all knew now!

Knew about them and always ignore - they're just trying to make you buy more often.

I've got make up that is about 10 yrs old, like powders (translucent/eye shadows, that kind of thing).
Still works just as well as it did on day 1. I use brushes to apply and keep my brushes as clean as possible.

I did know (but I've worked in a salon and am a total product addict so I'll never "duh" anyone!) The good news is that date is kind of a "best by" date more than a "this product will do terrible things to you if you keep using it" date, and I view them more as a "hmm, better use this more often" guide.

The only beauty-wise things I'm strict about are SPF and vitamin c because I really rely on them being effective, and those aren't when they age, and mascaras just to be safe. Powders I keep forever (I live in the desert and they seem to exist beyond time) and everything else gets used until it smells or performs funny.

I did know about this but because I am OTT about expiry dates 😂

Anything cream based will probably still be stable but less effective, anything makeup based like powders I would still use (mascara etc wouldn't use). SPF again wouldn't use (it loses effectiveness quickly) or any direct acids / treatments. It's a good guide, but I tend to use my products before they expire which is helpful!

I just threw out masses of eye make up pencils etc. I had a treatment for dry eye syndrome which can be caused by an infestation of eyelash mites🤮 which can live in makeup and brushes. I decided my ten year old lipsticks were ok though.

Knew you'd come back and say, 'We knew'Grin. They cost a fortune so unless they're doing what @ismu's were doing 😲I'll happily keep on using them.
Just thought it was such a surprise and wondered who else didn't know.

I don't use a mascara past 3 months but I have a BodyShop Beech LipLiner that pre-dates my marriage ( this year will be 28 years !) so doing well .
I sharpen it when needed .

Things like lipstick, any creams then if they're smelling ok, not seperated or gone funny , they;re ok with me . Though most face creams will be used before

You're not alone in discovering those expiry dates on beauty products! Many people tend to overlook them until it's brought to their attention. It's great that you found out about it, though.
The number of months from the date of opening is a useful guideline to ensure the product's freshness and effectiveness. And you're right; most of us have a few products tucked away in drawers or bags.
If you ever want to double-check the authenticity or manufacturing details of your beauty products, you can always use a batch code checker online. It's a handy tool to have, especially when you're unsure about the shelf life of your cosmetics and skincare items.
