Brand new cashmere - moth protection

Newnamefornewyear2023 · 14/01/2023 15:15

I have a moth problem. Do my best with anti moth products but they don’t work 100% so a lot of my wool and cashmere has darns. I bought a duplicate item in the sale of something I already have as I want a smart version and the one I have already has a small hole. I probably won’t wear the new one this winter and maybe not even next winter and want to keep it moth-free. If I keep it unworn, in the plastic bag it came in, should it be safe from moths indefinitely?

Have you tried the vacuum bags? You can get them on Amazon and they come with a pump, I use them for baby clothes, duvets, seasonal things to be put away, etc

They protect the items from damp/mould, insects, smells etc, they're so useful - and help to save space!!

i use some Lakeland moth bags and put in one of those little citric moth repellants

Squamata · 14/01/2023 15:53

Depending on the size, you could keep it in the freezer. Vacuum bags are good but check them regularly, they can devacuum when you're not looking! Or a ziplock bag with moth papers that are changed every few months.

But basically the bugs win out :)

Honestly the best way to avoid moths is to keep your cashmere in regular rotation. I wear mine weekly, at least, and some of it is really old and still in good condition. Just don’t give the moths time to set up home (and don’t keep your cashmere in your cold, dark wardrobe, which is ideal for them).

lindyloo57 · 14/01/2023 16:23

@WhenisitmyturntobePM can I ask, wear do you keep your cashmere then, if not in the bottom of the wardrobe as I do.

WhenisitmyturntobePM · 14/01/2023 16:26

@lindyloo57 folded up on a shelf in a bright, warm spot.

WhenisitmyturntobePM · 14/01/2023 16:29

@lindyloo57 I have to say though, I don’t think we have moths to start with, so I don’t know whether leaving it out would work for you if you already have them. But definitely wearing it regularly will help.

Its just I have cashmere over 4 years old, and I do keep them in the bottom of my wardrobe, maybe I've been lucky, never had a problem with moths, hope I haven't talked it up.

the fuckers ALWAYS win ime.

sorry.

I have bought cashmere items to save for later (future replacements for a couple of much loved things). I keep them in ziploc freezerbags tightly sealed, even the moths won’t get in those.

The Rentokil moth papers are great taped into wardrobes and drawers

AnnaMagnani · 15/01/2023 08:48

48 hours in the freezer once a year. Plus setting a moth candle a couple of times a year. Unfortunately with milder winters moth season is now most of the year.

Even this is just slowing things down. I've got very in to visible darning to keep things going.

I have a good few cashmere jumpers and scarves and have not had one hole using these and have used for many years. I also put them in wool coat pockets when in my wardrobe.
