Extraction facials in the UK

Back home (continental Europe) I would always get extraction facials. I have PCOS and while I'm lucky not to have aggressive cystic acne, I do have the white bumps all along my cheeks and jawline. I see a dermatologist who has confirmed it's 100% hormonal, and am currently on spironolactone to help manage it.

Despite this the pesky white bumps never go away completely, and every few months I need to go to someone who will squeeze them out for me (using their hands and a needle where necessary). It's the only thing that actually helps; I can usually go for 6mo with clear skin between visits. My dermatologist encourages this; she says the bumps are too stubborn to go away any other way.

The problem is, I can't find the right kind of facial here in the UK. I have gone for about a dozen treatments called an "extraction facial" but they never actually deal with the tough white bumps, they just do the odd blackhead. I need the kind of facial that is extremely painful and leaves me red for days, but then gives me perfectly smooth skin for months after!

I did have one great facial (in the style I'm used to) from a Polish lady, but that was when I lived elsewhere in the UK (400+ miles away).

At this point I'm tired of shelling out for "extraction facials" that turn out to be disappointing - I do always ask if they handle the bumps, they say yes, and then I end up disappointed.

Someone suggested before that it's something to do with lawsuits and/or rules around breaking skin here in the UK, I've also heard it's related to training for cosmeticians, I really don't know though... maybe I have just had very bad luck, but from talking to people I get the feeling it's not really a "thing" here - could be wrong though?

Anyway! How do I find an old-fashioned, extremely painful but effective extraction facial here in the UK? I am in London. Thank you!

I know what you mean. The extractions are so painful but so, so worth it. I know someone in Wembley who does this. Or did pre-covid.

I have milia and other skin conditions which can not be treated topically.

I have had different types of extractions. It sounds like you need what is described as as a 'manual extraction', to remove the spots/bumps with a needle.
After my treatment, only the areas that are treated are red for a few days.

I vaguely recall a law/regulation about piercing the skin but I've been to two different clinics who were licensed and were able to extract the milia with a needle. They were both qualified cosmotologists, who happened to be Polish.

I think it's worth asking around and enquiring what the treatment covers before making an appointment.
I imagine in London, there is a wide variety of choice.

Good luck OP

There was a woman (not British) working in London Bridge doing this a few years ago but no idea if she's stil around. I think I booked her on Treatwell at the time but I can't remember her name!

Do you have a picture of the bumps you mean? My skin is like what you've explained and was wondering if this is what I need.

piscosours · 12/01/2023 22:54

What you all need is topical tretinoin to be honest. It gets rid of the bumps altogether. Extractions are completely temporary

penpalconfusion · 12/01/2023 22:58

Thank you everyone so far!

@Dontbugmemalone thank you - I will search for "manual extractions" from now on! You're right, there should be choice in London of all places. Hopefully it'll be more straightforward now that I have the right terminology.

@90yomakeuproom I tried taking a pic but am struggling with lighting, I'll try again in the daylight tomorrow!

@piscosours I do remember discussing this option with my derm and us not going along that route for some reason, but I don't remember why. I'll bring it up next time, thank you

Hi, I am a beauty therapist, I do offer the type of facial you need. However I'm a bit too far away from you in Hove. I use the skincare range Yon Ka and they do offer a deep cleansing facial with extractions. It's a French skincare company, so offers a more European style of facials. The treatment is called the Grande Classic, you can check if there is a salon near you that offers this treatment. They have a salon finder option on their website.

Beauty therapists are taught to do extractions, however I think in Europe. It is seen as an essential part of grooming. So clients wont mind a facial that isn't as relaxing and is more hands on.

penpalconfusion · 12/01/2023 23:09

@Hathats oh no, too bad about the distance! But thank you so much, that is very helpful - I just googled and it looks like I have some options near me which is very exciting :)

That's interesting about the difference between here and Europe - so people want different things from a facial as opposed to it being something legal...

Watching this thread as I'm looking for something like that as it is what I used to have at home but I googled "manual extraction facial London" and the results were all for blackhead extraction, what am I doing it wrong?

OP, please let us know if you find it, I'd owe you one!

Bear65 · 12/01/2023 23:22

Hi @penpalconfusion - following with interest as this is the sort of facial I want. I am London too and haven't had any luck either!

hennylovespens · 13/01/2023 06:48

I've had the kind of CD facial you're asking for in both of these salons, by lovely ladies who really enjoy their job. (Which is what you want in a de-gunking facial imo) It was painful though, and I was red for days.

Thank you, I'm glad your searches have improved.

I read your post a bit more this morning. It sounds like you have maturation arrest acne, this is when the sebum can't escape the pores and becomes trapped. This causes the small bumps you describe.

Its good you've been perscibed the spironolactone, this will help. Do you take any Omega 3 oils as this can improve the consistency of your sebum and reduce inflammation.

Do you use any retinol products? They will help to unblock pores by increasing cell turnover. I would also recommend a exfoliating cleaner, type depending on your skin. Then a hydrating serum to boost hydration which can be an issue with this skin type.

LordEmsworth · 13/01/2023 08:37

I used to have Dermalogica 60 facials which included steam extractions, and they were amazing (the therapist quit during/post Covid, sadly, and I've not been able to find anyone else near me) - maybe look for Dermalogica?

hennylovespens · 13/01/2023 11:08

Just to add, my skin was red for days because I have ridiculously sensitive skin and also don't do these things regularly enough so it's always a big job when I do get round to itBlush

Spring23 · 13/01/2023 11:46

Have you tried hydrafacials? Cavendish or Therapie do then and find the quality and clarity of my skin has improved and definitely do extractions
