Anyone dyed their hair their own colour?

I have mid brown hair but quite a lot of grey hairs coming through. Thinking of getting hairdresser to dye hair my own colour. Do people do that?

I would have thought that’s what most people do?

MintChocCornetto · 12/01/2023 09:17

I do it. Not at a hairdresser but I use proper professional dye

Oh, I thought people usually dyed it a different colour. I see lots of my old school friends going blonde.

How often do you have to re-do it? I have very fine hair and am quite worried about frizziness if it's over processed.

I do it every 7/8 weeks. Just the roots and then blend it through the rest of the hair for 5 minutes at the end.

That sounds reasonable. What dye do you buy?

Wella koleston
I mix 2 shades, one for grey coverage 55/0 and a golden brown 4/3 with 20% developer. The proportions you need for the amount of grey you have are in the instructions.

Used to use 44/0 but it was starting to look quite harsh when it was first put on, i wasn't sure whether I was a 4 or 5 really when I first did it. I'm probably more of a 5 but the mix of the two shades is working well for me currently. I might go to a 5 in the summer and see how that looks.

You won't go lighter than your current hair anyway so if you're unsure which shade you need pick the lighter one.

Thanks @MintChocCornetto

@Spellegrin I meant 20 volume not 20% developer. Thought that didn't sound right and went to check

I used to do it, even though my hair was naturally a boring mousy-brown. I love the salt and pepper grey now and am relieved to give up the dye and the root touch-up palaver.

CuriousMama · 12/01/2023 12:23

Have you tried a Casting in the same shade? They're not as harsh and will blend your greys. That's what I use. I was blonde and went back to brown just with them. Be cheaper too.

Spellegrin · 12/01/2023 12:49

@CuriousMama Yes, I used that for years. A long time ago that product used to give my hair body. It thickened the hair fibres up. I think they've changed the ingredients as it now makes my hair so so soft. The other reason for thinking about a permanent dye is that I believe it would thicken the fibres up.

@Spellegrin
That's a shame. Hope you have success at the salon am sure you will.

Begonne · 20/07/2023 17:07

There comes a point where it’s easier to go lighter as it blends with the greys and you don’t get as harsh a root line. You might find that your friends are just greyer than you are right now

WhereAreWeNow · 20/07/2023 20:41

Isn't that what most people do to cover grey? I do.

mdinbc · 20/07/2023 22:11

DH did mine for me for years! He got quite good at it, just doing roots, then I would do the ends to freshen them. I used a L'oreal box colour, and it was quite natural looking.
