Which box dye should I use on grey hairs

I don't go to the salon. I never will I can't afford to in time or money and I hate going anyway.

I had been using L'Oréal excellence but I'm quite sure they've changed it or my hair has suddenly decided it doesn't like it anymore BA it no longer covers my greys. I use the no. 5

Any ideas for me? It's so stressful not having my go to hair dye when I need to look less like a gremlin for work with my large grey streaks through my dark hair!

L'Oréal Casting Crème Gloss? Used it in various shades for 25 yrs and was always very happy with it...and I had a lot of grey to cover. Stopped dyeing my hair just over a year ago though, so can't say if it's exactly the same formula now.

lilyipad · 10/01/2023 14:53

Thanks @TreesAtSea I will give it a go!

I use Nice and Easy Root cover, number 5. I leave it on longer than stated and it does a good job of covering my roots.

jojojanner · 10/01/2023 15:06

I use nice n easy but only the semi permanent.
It just blends the greys so my dark hair looks highlighted and because my greys are quite porous it doesn't wash out before I do it again but it looks so natural.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 10/01/2023 15:26

I am following with interest because I literally can dye my hair and see greys the next day around my hairline. Either my hair grows super fast or they are just invincible!

Stressybetty · 10/01/2023 15:38

I've been using the loreal excellence cool creme for ash tones. Still get grey's coming through quickly though.

MyGrandmaLizzie · 10/01/2023 16:03

I use L'Oréal Preference as it's better on greys than Excellence

Squiblet · 10/01/2023 16:08

I've used lots and there's not much between them really. Nice n easy has always served me well, but permanent ones are better than temporary for stubborn Grey's

A hairdresser once advised me to buy ones marked "no ammonia" because it would be kinder on my hair.

Revlon colorstay was the glossiest, but it can be hard to find.

snowlolo · 10/01/2023 16:08

Josh Wood is quite good.

But really haven't found anything as good as salon.

greenbirdsong · 10/01/2023 16:15

I found L'Oréal stopped covering my stub on grey/white roots.
During lockdown I ended up trying a £2 Schwarzkopf dye from Tesco as not much available and honestly it's the best for covering grey, makes my hair feel good and is so cheap!
It's called Schwarzkopf Poly Color and I use natural brown 39.

I use Naturtint permanent dye as it does not contain chemicals and covers the greys and leaves my hair soft and shiny and does not give me itchy scalp as get psoriasis if use other hair dyes. You can save some if do not use it all which is good.

I used to use nice and easy but now just buy the tubes of colour for £.3.99 and a giant bottle of 20 volume peroxide for £2.99....and mix up and do myself....better and a lot cheaper.

Userengage · 10/01/2023 21:54

Nice and easy semi permanent works only for a short time on mine, greys come back through in less than four weeks and about the same amount of washes.
I have just bought Garnier Olia as it was highly recommended to cover greys, have yet to crack it open.

SmartWatch · 10/01/2023 21:57

Where do you buy the separate tubes from please?

lilyipad · 10/01/2023 22:44

Thanks for the answers. @BOOTS52PollyPrissyPants sounds interesting. I have box dyed my hair for about ten years and go to the salon once a year to get it cut, my hair is in really good condition and I'm not overly bothered as at some point the grey coarse hairs which are coming through will take over anyway !

Where do you get this from? Is the peroxide just for lightening?

Marsde · 10/01/2023 22:52

I have exceptionally stubborn greys and found the L'Oreal dye I was using seemed to stop doing the job.

So like a pp I moved to Schwarzkopf Poly Color, so much cheaper at £1.99 a pack and covers my grey brilliantly. Since I've started using it people are commenting on how nice my hair looks and one colleague asked me if I've started getting it professionally done 😂 I couldn't afford that if I tried!

Don't know why anyone uses the expensive L'Oreal and others dyes now 🤷‍♀️

Ebay or a local hair supply shop...I use Maxima...its an italian brand, if you go to Sally supply shops, they are expensive....maybe about £9 a tube so check ebay first etc....all dyes need peroxide to activate the colour components....20 vol is what box dyes use....dont use 30 or 40 as thats for lightening....you could use 10 volume peroxide but 20 works better.

see my reply above...Ebay or a hair supply store...they have it all !..dont use Sally unless you have a trade card as very expensive.

Another vote for Naturtint! A box does 2 applications for me and it's £7 - lovely natural colours and no burning or stinging even if you leave on for (extra grey coverage time) 40 mins...

DivorcedAndDelighted · 11/01/2023 08:28

L'Oréal castings has worked for me for years, but a mobile hairdresser comes round and puts it on for me and she gets a better result than I would. She charges me £15 to apply it - she just puts it on and goes, and I wash it off later. My hair is mostly silver naturally but this restores my colour to my original medium brown and looks natural. Because my hair grows fast I need to do it every 2-3 weeks. I used to do it myself but it was hard to get good coverage at the back and took me ages. I only apply it to the roots and ignore the instructions advice to work through the whole hair for the last 5 minutes as this helps to avoid getting colour block.

Scatterbrainbox · 14/01/2023 16:37

There is a hairdresser's brand called wella koleston perfect, you can buy it on amazon.
You buy the colour ( 5/00 and if you have resistant grey 55/00 would be the same as that loreal colour) (maybe mix half and half) and you mix it with the developer 1 part colour to 1 part developer.
You would need to buy a box of gloves and a little mixing bowl and tint brush (mine were about 2 quid at home bargain).
It's is much better in my opinion than box dyes on grey and lasts for ages. If you bought a tube of 55/00, one of 5/00 and the welloxon 6% developer it wpipd cost about £26. The colour would do about 5 applications and the developer has lasted me about a year. There is a lot less waste, when you're doing your roots you only need to make a little bit up.
