Which brands still make good quality clothes?

We’ve heard loads on here about the decrease in quality of many brands (Boden, FatFace, Hush). Which brands (old or new) still produce decent quality clothing that lasts and lasts, and represents decent value?

The three items I’ve been most impressed with this year are my Hobbs Tilda coat (rich colour, softest wool, gorgeous lining), my Toast pyjamas ( make my feel like Anna Madrigal, if anyone gets the reference) and a Brora sweater I picked up second hand in a charity shop. DMIL buys lovely stuff at Poetry, but it’s not really my style or my price bracket for regular purchases.

Any ideas for brands worth a try?

Don’t laugh but the most reliable brand I’ve bought from this year was Superdry! Lovely cotton used in trousers and tops, and a really good finish. I bought several pairs of their combats because the detailing (e.g. buttoned pockets) and fabric were so nice.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 09/01/2023 17:34

I bought a nice Superdry hoody then some gloves which I had to return straightaway

TwoMagnificentLabradors · 09/01/2023 17:34

I’m not laughing at all because, while I don’t own any Superdrug clothes, we own quite a few Superdry shares. DH is convinced it’s a great little company. I’ll give their stuff a try.

Well that seems unanimous hahaha

We've just bought some stuff from passenger and the quality of the knitwear is fantastic

Cos

Their brushed cotton pyjama trousers are very thick and good quality.
I discovered that 'by accident' by buying them firstly in a charity shop and then went and bought some more on vinted. They will last forever.
I'm not keen on the style of superdry in general but these are amazing.
I saw some that appeared good quality from a distance from fat face and when I went to touch them, the thin-ness of them was abysmal! They looked rustic and cuddly from a distance.

Oh glad I saw that, they have a cardigan I want!

Finisterre
Seasalt away from the flowery monstrosities
Rapanui for t-shirts

Thought

Not exciting, but I bought from Baukjen for the first time last year and have gone back several times. Excellent quality for staples.

user143677433 · 09/01/2023 18:13

Seasalt and LandsEnd are really good quality natural fibres but you have to be really careful to avoid the frump. Masai have lovely wool coats. M&S still good if you are careful about the fabric content (they’re merino and cashmere jumpers in particular). Jaeger (now part of M&S. Kin (John Lewis) for cotton. Hiut denim.

APurpleSquirrel · 09/01/2023 18:13

I don't agree that Fat Face quality has gone down - especially not the 100% cotton stuff - washed well, doesn't fade, doesn't get mud-sharpen etc.

Lummikukka · 09/01/2023 18:15

Another vote for Superdry. Thick, plain, cotton t-shirts that have lasted through multiple washes.

AlwaysGinPlease · 09/01/2023 18:18

I love Fatface for quality. Things from there last well.

Ed1n · 09/01/2023 18:23

Sadly I agree fatface quality has plummeted. I bought some jeans there for around the £50 mark and they have two large rips across them that I’ve stitched up. I’ve never had jeans do this but the fabric is weak and the rips propagate horizontally at speed.

In general things felt a lot thinner fabric wise in there.

Cos and Uniqlo for staples pretty good still I think.

TwoMagnificentLabradors · 09/01/2023 18:26

I’ve had stuff from Cos before but haven’t looked there for ages. I’ll definitely give it another go.

Finesterre - amazing quality!

I've got a cotton cord skirt from Thought which is a few years old, I've worn a lot and still looks brand new. I've had lots of rubbish from them too though - viscose that has bobbled, shrunk and faded very quickly, and some of the bobbliest jumpers I have ever had - cotton/wool blend, really badly finished.

AnnieSnap · 10/01/2023 00:53

I like Cos, Other Stories and, despite the current hatred on Mumsnet, I still generally rate Boden for quality.

LadyOfTheCanyon · 10/01/2023 05:24

Nothing to add other than I used to love Tales of the City, OP. Smile

Polarbearyfairy · 10/01/2023 06:13

Seasalt use some really good, high quality fabrics. As PP said above, you have to be careful to avoid the trump! Their tunics are particularly sad. But I have many lovely seasalt dresses.

sandgrown · 10/01/2023 06:19

I wanted a true waterproof coat for walking the dog . I got a Seasalt Jenelle in the sale. It’s not particularly stylish but it certainly keeps me dry and it’s lovely and long .

Valkirie · 10/01/2023 07:02

I’d agree with Toast, Cos, Brora, Baukjen and Finisterre as per PP’s suggestions above. I’ve also had good experiences with Sezane (everything I’ve tried has been excellent for the price), NRBY (for cotton/linen) and Olive (for knitwear).

Fedupofdiets · 10/01/2023 07:06

Also a vote for Cos you can't beat it IMO. Also have a Seasalt on our high st and the basic stuff (as somebody said away from the flowery stuff) is really good quality, had a corduroy skirt and knitted jumper for Xmas and they are lovely.

Nitgel · 10/01/2023 07:16

Uniqlo and jigsaw sale baukjen is ok but massive price increases.
