Where are all the non-frumpy, warm, waterproof coats?

I'd settle for water resistant (begrudgingly) but it has to be warm enough to wear on a snow day.

I just ordered this, but despite the name (and description) it is very thinly padded and not actually that warm - www.passenger-clothing.com/products/alaska-jacket-rubber

I'd love something that looks like this, or could be a bit sportier in style. Don't love the parka parka look, nor knee-length coats.

Budget £100.

Any ideas?

Eg. I like this www.mountainwarehouse.com/animal-thurso-womens-padded-jacket-p37426.aspx/Burgundy/?searchintent=&gclid=Cj0KCQiAzeSdBhC4ARIsACj36uH1TrJ9VeN7Ue4QQX5f6o0kEZkEnV2lir746wAIMv2wYcYuP7FPsskaAp8kEALw_wcB but it is only suitable for light rain...why?! We live in a very wet country, where it is often simultaneously cold!!

It's a bit of a holy grail I've found... have you looked on regatta? this looks warm and waterproof but not sure if it ticks your boxes. Or this but maybe too parka like?

Other brands to look at might be Sea salt, Finnesterre and Didricksons, though the latter two are £££ there might be things in the sale...

Equestrian shops. Designed for waterproof & warm.

BarbaraofSeville · 08/01/2023 12:00

I'd prioritise waterproof over warm as you can always layer up underneath. If it's waterproof and warm, you won't be able to wear it on the many days where it is raining, but not that cold, especially if you're going to be walking about or in and out of shops etc when you're wearing it.

I got a (very waterproof unpadded but still quite warm unless it is very cold) thigh length Didriksons for £130 from Cotswold in the sale a couple of years ago and I've worn it constantly and am very happy with it.

Googling suggests that there are some options within your budget if you can find the right size. But size up rather than your normal size or down, as they're not generous and if it's slightly oversized, that means you can always fit a jumper or down jacket underneath.

I got this from Seasalt - I suppose it could be seen as frumpy, it came in different lenghts if I have linked to the right one (it was bought over a year ago so might be a different model now) and has a longer back.
But the hood is furry and fits me and stays up - not the case with any other hooded jackets or coats that I own.

I got a really lovely Michael Kors khaki parka from TK Maxx. No obvious branding or logos or anything. Obviously luck of the draw but worth seeing what they have. Think it was about £90.

Hi @houseargh thanks for posting! Just wanted to pop in and point you in the direction of our page for the best winter coats for women if you're still on the look out! It's made up of recommendations from Mumsnet users and includes a wide range of options and styles. Hope it's of some help, please feel free to let us know if you've any feedback! Smile

I recently bought the alto puffer at Sweaty Betty, insanely warm and waterproof as far as I can tell. Think it's £133 in the sale though.

Lentilweaver · 09/01/2023 17:21

I dont think such a coat exists. I bought a Seasalt Janelle recently too. Everyone thinks they are frumpy but it suits me because I am very small busted and have long legs.

LandsEnd? They have very good sales at the moment though I actually think they look frumpier than Seasalt.

Didrikson's Mea Parka is waterproof and also looks very sleek and stylish, but they had run out of my size.

Thanks all, some good ideas on here. None felt quite right but an ad on Amazon after I clicked on one of the suggestions in the Mumsnet article led me in the right direction... Ended up going for the the Peter Storm Paloma Parka in yellow (looks bright yellow in the pic but it's really mustard, which I prefer). It's not perfect - could be a tad warmer (but pretty good and a lot warmer than the first one I bought) and I wish the waist wasn't cinched at the back. But in general pretty happy and pleasantly surprised - Peter Storm is not a brand I would have considered when looking for non-frumpy!

The warm and waterproof ones are usually more than 100 quid. I got a craghopper waterproof for about 90 quid in the sale, it says thermal on it but it isn't super warm. The hood is great though, and it's properly waterproof. I sized up and wear a thick jumper underneath on colder days.

I brought this a few years ago for a smart but practical coat.

I got the Finisterre one from the Mumsnet best coats of 2022 list. Love it. Toasty warm and waterproof but stylish too.

TizerorFizz · 14/01/2023 21:06

Doesn’t a mustard coat = frumpy?

PomPomSugar · 14/01/2023 21:20

Stutterheim

houseargh · 15/01/2023 06:07

@TizerorFizz haha, didn't know that but I'll live if so. Personally the signs of frump I was trying to avoid were a long length, coat very cinched in the middle and coats only available in navy/dark green/brown/black. Maybe frumpy is the wrong word but I was basically looking for the opposite of that!
