How “dressy” to you dress on a day to day basis?

Whatthediddlyfeck · 05/01/2023 13:44

I had a lot of years of being overweight so very restricted to what I could buy-and I didn’t want to bring attention to myself anyway. Happily this is no longer the case, and I have the option of shopping wherever I like for pretty much whatever I like.
Im finding myself really drawn to dresses on the likes of SilkFred, and really want to enjoy clothes. However I’m aware that a lot of the clothes I’m drawn to are very “dressy”, although can be dressed down by wearing with trainers etc.
I suppose I’m asking if it’s reasonable to be “dressy” on a daily basis?

(by the way I’m a lazy mare when it comes to makeup if that helps!😂)

I have 2 styles:

  1. Full face of makeup, styled hair, nails, ‘dressy’ clothes, heels, matching accessories.
  2. Just rolled out of bed look.

SilkFred have some lovely things, go for it

Tallulasdancingshoes · 05/01/2023 13:55

I’m very casual - think jeans, leggings, jumpers, boots etc. I like to be warm and comfy. I wish I was a bit smarter and often look at dresses, but when I put one on it just doesn’t feel right and I feel too ‘dressed up’. But it I saw someone else wearing a dress I’d probably think they looked nice and not too dressed up at all.

NegroniLover · 05/01/2023 14:11

I'm moderately 'dressy' every time I leave the house.
By that I mean if going to town shopping a v typical outfit for me would be
Whistles cropped wide legged Black trousers
Whistles flat black leather laced ankle boots
Jigsaw cashmere jumper
Italian wool scarf
Wool long coat
Mulberry bag
Gold jewellery
Tom ford perfume
Hair & makeup done

I sometimes wear Whistles black joggers & a zadig & voltaire sweatshirt or ME+EM wide legged joggers with a cashmere jumper & new balance trainers.

For work I wear tapered wool trousers witj turn ups & Chelsea boots & Jersey blazer from Whistles with silk blouse from sezane

Nights out I wear wide legged long or cropped trousers with silk vest & velvet kimono or blazer with block heeled leather ankle boots etc

I currently don't own any jeans or leggings

I love dresses too but tend to wear them more at night. I don't like midi dresses with trainers so suitable all day footwear sort of rules out dresses by day for me.i am looking at long leather boots in jigsaw at the moment so that could be a game changer for dresses

I am 52 & size 12. Lifeus short - dress in a way that makes you feel like you! Well done on the weight loss - please wear the dresses you really deserve it & I.think when you've worn them a few times in the day you become used to it & will no longer feel overdressed

Lkydfju · 05/01/2023 14:21

I’m always jealous of people who are dressy every day so I say go for it!
@NegroniLover i think I aspire to be like you

SallyWD · 05/01/2023 14:31

I wouldn't describe myself as dressy but I do try and look presentable and fairly nice. I generally wear jeans and a top, earrings and a necklace. I make sure my hair looks good, wear perfume, nice-ish boots and coat.

NegroniLover · 05/01/2023 14:37

Thank you @Lkydfju ! I love clothes & always have. I don't feel like 'me' wearing jeans & a hoody etc but we're all different & we need to wear & do what makes us happy.
I love fabric & textures & am drawn to certain embellishments.
But I am not drawn to what lots of people seem to consider 'dressy' (going by the many many threads on here discussing appropriate clothes for weddings etc)
I have always worked in a creative sector too which certainly allows a lot of latitude in dress code
I love the well dressed architect look (though it's not my sector)

Arushofbloodtothehead · 05/01/2023 14:44

Yesterday in the office - knee length dress, tights, low boots and scarf.

Today working from home and on the school run - tracksuit bottoms, nice polo neck jumper (for work video calls).

Hair neat and tidy and a bit of makeup on each day.

I just want to be comfortabe. We're allowed to wear jeans in the office but I fund dresses more comfortable.

DedicatedFolllowerofFashion · 05/01/2023 15:23

@Whatthediddlyfeck it all depends on what you do during the day surely? Work? WFH? not working etc?

TheProvincialLady · 05/01/2023 15:27

You had all those years not being able to wear what you liked. Now you can wear what you like, so WEAR WHAT YOU LIKE! Have fun with it!

WhatDoYouWantNow · 05/01/2023 15:30

Full face of make-up, if I'm going anywhere.
Trousers, top, trainers

DarlingCoffee · 05/01/2023 15:37

Absolutely OP! I feel good about myself when I dress up for work. I love a long or midi dress and usually wear it with ankle boots or trainers to dress it down a bit. I say crack on with the dresses and enjoy 😊

Slimjimtobe · 05/01/2023 15:41

Honestly if you are feeling great and well done on the weight loss !! Wear the glam stuff (ps what’s your secret?)

Montague22 · 05/01/2023 17:49

I wear nice clothes most days, usually dresses with boots. Yesterday black trousers and dark silk top which would be a ‘going out top’ for some.
I wear hardly any make up during the day just mascara, Vaseline and a bit of concealer if I need (and sunscreen every day). So this makes it feel more casual than if I had a full face of make up.
I do do my hair though.

I don’t work anywhere even vaguely glamorous.

Same here - there isn't really an in-between for me! Most of the time I look like boiled shite, but I do scrub up quite well!

But if you want to go dressy then go for it, like you say most things can be dressed down with a pair of trainers these days.

roselune · 05/01/2023 18:08

Generally smart casual, ideally natural fabrics like cotton, linen and wool... which for me looks something like:

Midi dress (from somewhere like White Stuff, Seasalt), jumper or cardi, tights, ankle boots or smart trainers

Black or grey jeans or black wide leg trousers, jumper (shoes as above)

Midi or knee length skirt, jumper or cardi with a turtleneck or striped top, tights (shoes as above)

I do wear make up and usually have my hair up/back on a bun.

Oher · 05/01/2023 18:37

Mostly pyjamas but sometimes I’m posh and wear yoga pants.

I dress up for school mum meetups once a term, that’s about it.

Whatthediddlyfeck · 05/01/2023 18:52

Thank you all -and @NegroniLover I also aspire to be more like you -I’m trying though!
Day to day I wear a uniform for work so that’s taken care of, I want to look like me but a bit better (with minimal effort 😂), but I’m glad no one seems to think it’s a weird way to dress

I am C-Suite (beauty) so I have to be dressy.
I am a rare 'big girl' in my industry but at 57 I am unlikely to change much.
I spend a lot on clothes, always have.
Max Mara jackets /coats.
Aspinal/ Mulberry bags.
Silk dresses in the summer. Wool Button through shirt dresses in the winter.
Most days I wear black silk /wool trousers-- Marks or lafayette. A silk blouse (lily silk) and a blazer type jacket. I have lots of statement necklaces (I look silly in small chains). I wear a posh German sketcher type shoe into work and slip on flats or low heals.
Obviously full make up, nails and hair.
I grew up in my sisters hand me downs. From 15 I bought my own clothes by working.
At home I wear straight black joggers and white t shirts /shirts. I usually live on a farm so tweed and wellies get a look in.
Well done on the weight loss, buy some lovely dresses. I am off to Google silkfred!

FelicityFlops · 05/01/2023 19:16

I always dress (as in clothes) as if I am going out to lunch. I don't often wear make-up, though.
Today the outfit is a navy cashmere jumper, navy velvet trousers, my favourite necklace/pendant, 3 colour gold knot earrings and a stonking 4ct diamond and red gold eternity ring. Plus navy Think! ankle boots.

welcome2023 · 05/01/2023 23:02

Slightly off topic
But I'm size 12-14 and couldn't find decent work dresses (like smart plain a line shape not black as red hair) and ordered from lily silk first time and impressed

Got size Large (I'm 12 in some shops, 14 in Hobbs) got a lovely navy shirt dress quite loose smart belt. Recommend

ChicagoBears · 05/01/2023 23:06

I typically work from home so it depends: if we have video calls I’ll wear a dress or a smart top with leggings. If doing in to the office I’ll always wear a dress and heels with a nice bag and smart coat.

on the weekend if we’re just mooching around/cycling / going for brunch at a relaxed cafe I’ll do sweaty Betty’s and a cute jumper with chunky trainers.

if I’m out at a good restaurant / bar, dress and heels.

really depends on the occasion.

Crazykefir · 05/01/2023 23:13

Its nice to dress up. You can wear long boots with a dress in winter.

Sugarfreesherbertlemon · 05/01/2023 23:47

@Whatthediddlyfeck I am in the same position in terms of more choice via weight loss. I think that “dressed up” for me means getting excited about the clothes I am going to be wearing and actively putting together an outfit. It could be as simple as jeans and a jumper but it will be the fact that I have thought about what jeans to wear, what jumper goes with it and what shoes and accessories too which goes back to the vibe I am aiming for but each piece will be purposely chosen compared to a few years back when it was what did I have and what fits. Wear what makes you happy ans have fun!

TheChosenTwo · 05/01/2023 23:56

Ooh I’m definitely at the lower end of the smart scale but always neat and clean! Wear dresses often to work because I’m lazy and not fashionable (so less ‘choosing’ with one dress rather than separates) and currently rather chunkier in the middle so trousers and tops cut me in half at my widest point and I don’t want to draw any attention to my mid section 😂
Dress, tights and either trainers or boots is a usual staple for me (no jewellery), in the office/wfh/weekends.
Or ‘athleisure’ wear, leggings with a sweatshirt for even more lazy days.
I very rarely dress up even for nights out etc, I’m much more comfortable in casual clothes. I look after my skin but rarely bother with makeup at all. It’s a lot of faff for me and I just can’t be arsed.
