Has anyone given themselves a 'shaggy cut' at home?

I really want to change my hair but can't afford the hairdressers right now.

I've cut my own fringe since my teens (it's way over grown right now as I want shaggy fringe)

And I cute my friends hair all the time but it's different on your own.

Pics of my hair now and what I want

Or an online tutorial?

I wouldn't but I'm not a hairdresser. I once tried to cut my then 2 yr old's fringe and ballsed it up so there is no one at I would. You say you have cut other peoples hair so you might be ok but what about the back? Could you look at volunteering for a trainee to practice on your hair. They often do that at local salons.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 05/01/2023 12:28

That should say no way I would at all

NooNakedJacuzziness · 05/01/2023 12:31

I was sorely tempted a few weeks ago - look up Brad Mondo wolf cut on YouTube. It looks sooo easy - but I bet I would balls it up!! Probably best to get it done properly.

Yeah, I've done similar, it's not overly complicated and originally were home haircuts so it's not rocket science. However, my natural hair texture lends itself very well to the style and I'm not sure how good a result you'd get with yours, is it naturally straight? It would also be much shorter than the model's in the picture if you style it wavy.

There's a few good YouTube tutorials I used at the time, I'll dig for them if you're interested.

JoyPeaceSleep · 05/01/2023 12:32

I did it may 2020 and it turned out well. My colleague did it for me over the bin in the toilets at work. It turned out OK tbh!

Better from the front because there were no layers at the back. It ended up being ages before I got to a hair dresser.

Aria999 · 05/01/2023 12:32

I once had a shortish haircut that looked awful and I was about to go on holiday so I took the scissors to it and slashed. It was mostly ok but there was one too short bit and it stuck out for ages.

Recently I had a cut a bit like the one you wanted and one side still seemed a funny shape so I edited it slightly. I'm still not sure if that was a good idea or not.

(I cut DS's and DH's hair and it normally looks ok).

You would struggle to do the back.

If you know what you are doing I guess it might work but on balance I think it's risky.

Look up Brad mondo wolf cut on YouTube x

If you are on Instagram there is a hair stylist called Jayne Matthews (account is jayne_edosalon) and she has loads of tutorials and examples of people doing this kind of razor cut themselves. Lots of advice and examples , so worth a look.

I do a long cut on myself diy. I invested in decent, but not excellent quality, scissors. Both a straight hair cutting pair and a pair for thinning the ends. I figure worst case scenario I can go in and get it cut shorter to correct my work, but I’ve been cutting it myself since 2020. Not sure I have the confidence to do a shag.

Yes this. But follow it precisely and watch the videos many many times. Theoretically it's not hard but it's all in the proportions. And don't use kitchen scissors! Grin

TheGriffle · 05/01/2023 16:38

I also third watching Brad Mondo’s tutorials, they are very helpful. And also watch the fails so you know what not to do!

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 05/01/2023 16:42

Is Brad Mondo the chap that shows how to do the cut with 2 ponytails you pull forward? It seems to work, but I'm not sure it will work on straight hair - is that your natural hair OP?

GiveYourHeadAWobble · 05/01/2023 18:52

I did Brad Mondo's Butterfly Cut and I love it!

That's my hair just blow dried.

Not straightened or blowdried with a brush.

My girls style/cut their own hair and have done a pretty good job of it.

Frenchfancy · 05/01/2023 19:49

I've been doing the Mumsnet haircut for years. (brushed forwards into a ponytail then cut).

I don't know how it would work with a fringe though.

Snarkysnarksnark · 05/01/2023 20:00

I’ve been cutting mine since lockdown 01 doing this.

I’m going to try it this way at the weekend.

or this lady has a few good videos but I’m a bit cack handed so haven’t chanced it yet

Mamette · 05/01/2023 21:50

I did the MN haircut once when I had 2 under 18mo and no way of getting near a hairdresser. It wasn’t a disaster but I wouldn’t do it again. My hair had been very though, so I had quite a lot of margin for error.

Mamette · 05/01/2023 21:50

Very long!

Aria999 · 12/04/2023 19:43

I just did a very low key version of the Brad mondo, it worked really well! Thanks for the recommendation!

@Stranrahh did you go for it in the end?
