Brown Hair Dye Recommendations

Happy new year all. I am considering trying to dye my own hair as the hairdressers are so expensive.

Can anyone recommend a medium brown hair dye that would cover my roots and not turn my hair black?

I've read reviews of various dyes but can't seem to find any good ones.

I have dark brown hair with grey roots coming through every 2 to 3 weeks.

I've been using Casting Crème Gloss - it's semi-permanent so it doesn't seem to build up too much. I was struggling with colour variation with the permanent one I was using before. The shade I've been using is 'chocolate' (535) which has a bit of red in it but am thinking of switching to 'iced truffle' which has a bit of ash in it. The one I'm using now doesn't get too dark.

Use a tinting brush and colour only the roots. I was the same as you and coloured my own hair for around 5 years due to maintenance costs. In the end I grew the dye out and it has been so liberating to just be naturally grey haired. It's multi dimensional in a way hair dye can never be. It's less ageing than you think - my hair tone suits my skin tone.

I actually order professional Wella colour and developer, its much nicer colour and you can get colour mix formulations on their Instagram account and their blog.

Its so easy to mix them, its usually a 1:1 ratio, they have permanent or semi options, as well as a new gloss range.

I would go for a light brown to begin with as they're always darker than they say. Then you can always go a shade darker next time if it's too light.

I like the Olia range. Any number that begins with 6 is light brown, 5 is medium etc.

Like PP say, buy professional colour and developer and watch some youtube videos to get the technique of doing roots only.

Go at least one shade lighter, for the first couple of times. If you end up too light, you can go darker afterwards. BUT if you dye your hair too dark, it will be very hard to lift.

Also developer strength: It's not the dye, but the developer strength that determines whether it's semi/permanent. Get the wella one in the pink bottle which is < 3% to start with. (I cannot remember the number off the top of my head). If you find your colour is washing out, then you can go higher later. Also the higher the developer strength, the worse for your hair condition.

Spend a couple of hours doing some research and you'll find it's actually very straightforward and cheap!

How much grey do you have? I use henna powder off amazon in light brown.
