2023 Fashion. What styles will you be saying goodbye to?

I'm a fashion lover and tend to go for quite classic pieces that last the test of time - so usually means minimal to no prints for my most classic timeless pieces. I've been browsing the sales and am so sick of seeing the following - I do think they're well and truly on their way out of fashion, if not already!

Anything with a star print. I'm so tired seeing dresses, shirts, jumpers, etc with star motifs. Could be loads of stars or just one bang in the middle of a top. Often found in stores like HUSH, Mint Velvet, Scamp & Dude, etc

Equally, leopard print - especially multi-coloured leopard print patterns. Scamp and Dude is filled with this.

Low profile almond toe ankle boots - especially is paired with skinny jeans.

Batwing sleeves because they just look dated and they're hugely unflattering on most people.

And the most obvious - super tight skinny jeans. I do feel like there's still a place for these, but paired more with a western style boot or higher boot rather than an ankle boot or flat. I think the super tight jegging style that is stuck to your legs is out. I'm on the hunt for a more relaxed skinny now. I've got wide legs, boot cut, etc but I'd like a skinny to go with tall boots that's just got a bit of room in the leg compared with my outdated previous skinnies that I owned.

What would you say you're sick of seeing and would consider outdated?

I haven’t worn my skinnies since before lockdown 2020, they still fit and I’m reluctant to get rid in case they come back in. However I’m moving and trying to be ruthless so they might have to go.
I think I have one t shirt with a star, it will be handy for decorating.

Skinnies are still useful under wellies so I won't be getting rid but I also won't buy more.
I think I've seen too many high waisted as well although I know they can be flattering on some people. I'd like more mid rise.
Star print - agree!
In fact I'm off most prints now and I feel like the printed midi has had its day. I won't stop wearing mine but it would have to be a beautiful print for me to buy another.

Yes and actually wellies are going to be quite on trend soon. Higher kind of street style looking ones, so you can keep that in mind.

I also think the days of the oh so versatile black leather biker jacket are done now. I would consider them out of date now. They're being replaced with more of a relaxed style

I feel like the loose midi dress may be on its way out which I'll mourn as they're my go-to work wear. I'm seeing more tailored, structured styling, pencil skirts seem to be coming back. Skinnies have felt dated for a couple of years now, it's straights or wide.

Stokey · 03/01/2023 19:30

Also white trainers may have had their day?

I do agree - I love my midi dresses especially with boots, but I'm worried they're getting a bit overdone now. Jeans seem to have taken over midi dresses and skirts, and I know that shorter skirts and dresses are more on the end. I'm hoping I can still get away with midi dresses and boots, but paired with trainers they do feel a bit dated now.

And yes I was thinking that too. I think there will always be a place for them, but i think the Veja and basic white style is a bit overdone now as well. I do know that Adidas Gazelles and Samba's are very popular at the moment though....

Those pictures look about 3yrs out of date - as in pre-covid!! I’m looking forward to the 90s fashion dropping out, only because it’s not a good look for me!

There’s a big difference between ‘classic’ and ‘fashion’. As soon as they start stocking ‘fashion’ pieces in major retail chains, then the look starts to become dated. As I’ve got older, I tend to invest in things I can wear for years and more on the classic rather than fashion side. By default, I’m a lot more unfashionable now, but am happy in my purchases and comfortable in my clothes. I do miss the days when I was more forward thinking thinking though!

I’d prefer to age in the Vivienne Westwood way rather than the Kate Middleton, but think my confidence has dropped since I had children, it’s more about practicality and hard wearing items for me now. Maybe I need to make 2023 the year of the perk up!!

@Trymein I totally agree about the classic pieces.

As for those pictures, they're all current styles being sold now! Confused

Jeans with too much lycra.
Just because you can wiggle into them does not mean they fit. Look at the back of your thighs in the mirror and be honest, nine wrinkles makes you look like a sausage. Just buy a bigger size.

I've always been at the skinny end of life BUT menopause has stuck a stone on me and a reasonable portion is on my thighs. I had to buy bigger jeans.

I'm a country person and skinnies and wellies are useful for quagmires.

Yes, but shops still sell ballet pumps, skinny jeans, leggings, etc. Doesn’t mean they’re fashionable! That’s what I’m saying, I used to love high fashion, but have gotten old and probably a bit dull! Hence, I now go for more classic stuff, which still will look very dated I’m sure. Trouble is it’s all in the cut, and with classic pieces that can still date. Just have more expensive tastes now and can’t afford to keep updating the wardrobe, even with your more traditional pieces. The black lace up boot is a good example, it may look very similar, but even the ‘classic’ pieces depend on the shape, heel, etc., depending on the current fashion.
