Black trouser suits? Dated?

Bellagi · 02/01/2023 23:58

I struggle with workwear being a tall size 16 (too self conscious to tuck things in, and if i do, i always wear a blazer. I'm thinking to get a black trouser suit and vary the tops. Would that look dated? I'd love a navy suit but my tops are all bright and I think id get more use out of black.

Also, what's a good alternative to heels!

Yes, I'm afraid so. I work in the City and nobody wears a matching suit these days. I suggest different colour jackets and bottoms, most colours go with navy

Bellagi · 03/01/2023 00:10

@TheOpenRoad thank you. I do have some nice jackets in different colours but less bottoms. My most recent purchase was cropped trousers, perhaps I need longer, more stylish ones?

Suits that aren't black aren't dated though they are everywhere so maybe you could try a few?

Although granted it doesn't give you as much versatility.

Also depends on your profession, I work in an industry where the black suit will never go out of fashion.

Myjobisanightmare · 03/01/2023 09:21

I don’t think they’re dated as tailoring has been massive last few years but the cut of your suits could be dated as it’s all about a wider boxier looser fit

pickmints · 03/01/2023 09:25

Yes. I'd think they worked in security in one of the upmarket places. Other colours might be fine depending on the style.

Laquila · 03/01/2023 09:30

I admittedly work in a slightly less formal environment that the City but hardly ever see women in black suits now.

Practically everyone wears separates, with a different-coloured blazer, or midi dresses (which tbh I'm a bit sick of...)

I tend to wear tailored, slightly cropped slim trousers with tucked in blouses or tops, or sometimes shirt dresses. I hardly ever wear a blazer/jacket as it's so bloody warm in my office, but I don't think I'd even wear a suit to an interview now.

Do you use Vinted? That's where most of my office wear comes from nowadays!

The people who buy full ladies suits with matching tops and bottoms tend to be girls entering 6th Forms which require it and call it ‘business wear’ but haven’t realised people don’t wear that at work now, or are trying for a pseudo uniform.

My DD needed this for 6th Form and even M and S dint sell a ladies suit anymore and offered 1 black pencil skirt and 2 black jackets. They laughed when I asked where their ladies suits section was and said they hadn’t had one for years.

Yes agree I haven't seen them either. It's usually just the trousers that are more current now, not a whole suit.

Well every high street fashion store has them, Boohoo, New Look, ASOS so I think they may be back!

I'm pleased if they are I loved my 90's black trouser suits!

Colourful tops can make Black
Trouser suits look cheap. Neutrals are a better choice, cream, grey, taupe or a patterned silk blouse but avoid plain primary colours.
Choose your footwear carefully, brogues or ankle boots will be a better choice than black "stilettos".
I think you will get away with a black suit if you choose suitable footwear and tops.

I agree, with a neutral scoop neck top (not a strong colour top) and maybe not in black, it could be a very current look. There were a lot of trouser suits around in the shops for Christmas party season.

Bellsandwhistle · 03/01/2023 19:15

Agree with previous 2 posts trousers suits are back in a big way. Just need to wear neutral tops not coloured with black and some chunky loafers or brogues or platform trainers. Look at Zara it’s full of them!

stealthbanana · 03/01/2023 22:42

I love a black trouser suit with black loafers. I agree the 80s style suit with court shoes and a shirt underneath is not in fashion now.

Bellagi · 04/01/2023 09:19

I think my problem is I wear a lot of ditsy style tops and bright colours. In terms of current wardrobe

one pair of cropped trousers
one fuschia blazer with gathered sleeves
one coral boucle blazer
one black a line short skirt
one brown a line leather short skirt
lots of patterned ditsy tops
one camel coat
one pink car coat
one boyfriend black coat
shoes : Chelsea boots, long black boots

Can anyone advise on what to buy to bring it all together?

OP posts:
NightOwlNotEarlyBird · 04/01/2023 14:08

I think the ditsy tops and bright coloured jackets might be a bit too busy. Bright jackets and plain tops or neutral jackets and bright/patterned tops would be a better combination (and more versatile for mixing and matching).

In terms of trousers, a few different styles of plain trousers would go with most things. Find fits that work for your body shape (slim, wide leg, cigarette etc).

For shoes that aren't heels, try loafers or brogues.

BigFatLiar · 04/01/2023 14:13

I was never great at fashion. I liked my suits, jacket with trousers/skirt/dress. Lots of combinations. I thought it was smart and still do.

LivingDeadGirlUK · 04/01/2023 16:04

I may be in the minority but I think navy works well with bright colours.
