Using black hair products on Caucasian hair

Has been an absolute game changer for me. I have thick, course wiry porous frizzy hair and very little has tamed it over the years. I recently bought some products from the black range in Superdrug and it has made such a difference to my hair. The sheen spray in particular is amazing! Has anyone else tried this and got any other recommendations?

Following, I have the same coarse hair.

I’m Indian with thick curly type 3 hair - their range doesn’t work for me but a lot of my white friends with type 2 hair are raving about it. I’d be curious to read fb from black people because I imagine it can’t be very good as a black hair range.

All of the Palmers range of haircare stuff is fab. My daughter is mixed race and I am white, but I have very thick, coarse hair and we both use it. Their olive oil shampoo and conditioner is great, and also their coconut oil hairdress, for keeping frizzies in check.

I use lots of it. It's great - white here with curly hair. The co washes are great too

TowerStork · 02/01/2023 14:55

I'm also white with thick hair so this sounds like a promising recommendation.

Years ago when I was a teenager I bought some products from a shop for African migrants but they were too strong for my hair so I never considered it since.

Tell me about co washing. 😊
Palmers sounds good too!

I wondered the same thing (am white with type 2 hair and use caucasian hair products, but have mixed race DC with a mix of type 3/4 hair). I'm convinced that Cantu changed the formulation of many of their products when they blew up as a 'curly girl' (Caucasian hair) option - they suddenly stopped being any good for us, nowhere near enough richness or slip. No problem, I found other products which worked better, but it made me think.

(Which isn't to say that white people shouldn't use afro products, obviously! You can see just by looking that some white people's hair has very similar characteristics so it makes sense it might benefit from those products. It'd be more convenient for me if I could use the same products my kids do, but sadly mine just gets greasy and weighed down. On the plus side my haircare works out a hell of a lot cheaper than theirs!)

I have blonde 2b/c hair and find some of the Afro hair ranges, and brushes, have worked well for my hair. My hair isn't especially coarse but thicker, and unruly, when dry.

There's a hair gel I bought from the shop I use which will tame any flyaway hair. I can't remember the name offhand but I think it's olive based.

I've often thought about this but don't know where to start looking. I have unbelievably thick, coarse hair which is very dry. The only way I can get it to look good is to absolutely drown it in hair oil for 12 hours or so, shampoo and then apply a hair mask for at least an hour. Obviously this is a complete nightmare so I would love an alternative.

@Cheeseandlobster Can you link to the specific Superdrug products. My daughter has ringlet curls so always looking for products!

I'm aware white women using black hair care products is a sensitive topic. I'd describe my hair same as OP and for a while stopped using cantu and similar because of so much online advice about it being bad for wavy hair and that the companies had changed product ingredients to suit white people to the detriment of black people etc.

I've recently gone back to these products in desperation as general "wavy" advice seems to not work on my hair. I don't think extremely thick, extremely course and porous is common amongst Caucasian hair, unless also very curly? I can't think of a single friend or acquaintance with my hair.

megletthesecond · 03/10/2023 14:20

I've done this for years. Mixed Chicks and Cantu are really good.
Although I've now ventured into Philip Kingsley and it's amazing, I just have to budget for it.

I'm a black women. There is no problem with crossing the aisle. Use the product that works for your hair. We don't care. We cross the aisle, too. Beautiful hair is the goal. Good luck.
