It’s way too early…. But, what would you wear with this?

Sister is getting married at the beginning of July. I’ve just this week bought this dress for it:

Disclaimer: I won’t be pregnant but baby will be around 1 month old and I plan to EBF like I did with DS, the dress is breastfeeding compatible.

Wondering what shoes you’d pair with this? Preferably something comfortable - maybe a block heel?

Would you match fascinator to shoe colour or another colour in the dress? And if it’s cold, a shawl? (Or is that too ‘000s’?)

Any help would be appreciated!

Bonus question: DS is in the wedding and wearing a dark tartan, do I get baby an outfit to match that, me or doesn’t it matter?! 🤔

TIA

I wouldn't worry about an outfit for the baby.

You could wear almost any colour shoes & hat with that dress. What colouring are you? What suits your skin tone best?

HappyAsASandboy · 02/01/2023 09:04

That's a beautiful dress! I'd get shoes and a light cardigan and a fascinator to match a colour in the dress. Or the fascinator could be white/cream to match the background of the dress and the shoes/cardi the same colour to match on of the colours in the dress.

I wouldn't match the baby to your older child if he's in the wedding party. It will look like you're trying to put him in the wedding party! Plus dark tartan sounds too dark and unlikely to be light/cool for a baby in July. Choose a light colour that won't clash with your dress (and a set of babygrows/vests in light pastels too, for when the baby needs umpteen clothing changes on the day).

Pretty dress. I’d go for a simple sandal with a block heel, ankle strap and band across the foot. Maybe in orange, or otherwise tan.

Fascinators seem very dated to me. Better would be a straw hat with a wide brim. A big cosy wrap would be good. Go for something bigger and weightier than a classic pashmina.

MadeInChorley · 02/01/2023 09:07

It’s pretty and practical. Silver block heel sandals would work with that dress. And would be easy to match with other clothes and wear again. If it’s a Scottish wedding I’d think about a pashmina, jacket or something to keep you warm (bitterly cold experiences speaking!). Patterns hide leaks better than self-coloured dresses.

I was 3 weeks post birth with DC2 and EBF at my brother’s wedding and I wore a DVF wrap dress like this. It was brilliant. Can also wear maternity pads with it without showing.

Agree that fascinators are a bit maiden auntie and old fashioned now. Instead of a hat, which falls off when you bend down and have your arms full, I’d keep accessories to a minimum. I went for a bouncy professional blow dry and they put up for me in a simple high pony tail at DB’s wedding. Looked polished and elegant, lasted all day and keeps hair out the way. No need to brush or bother.

Another tip - forget a handbag, especially a clutch! You’ll be holding a baby or pushing a pram and they are a pain.

Don't match the baby. You have enough to worry about. Not a fan of tiny matchy matchy babies and you’ll likely have to change outfits during the day anyway.

@MintJulia, my completion is very pale. Think ‘Light porcelain’ foundation shades! Not really sure what colours ‘suit’ me as I don’t usually give it much thought 😅

@HappyAsASandboy, I think lilac is the most dominant colour so possibly that then? Maybe a blush pink would also work? 🤔 Not sure I’d want to go with the green but maybe a turquoise/teal colour might work.

Thank you for the tips about changes - hopefully baby will stay clean enough for photos before putting them in something less ‘formal’. I have been told boy but will confirm at my 20w scan in a couple of weeks so hoping to find something suitable in the sales!

I have mid-brown hair and a similar skin tone to you. Purple accessories would work for me.

B1993 · 02/01/2023 09:26

@NancyJoan, I’ve got such a small head (literally went on a trip with work and all the adult heard helmets were too big so had to to ask for a skids size 🤣) that I’m not sure a hat would suit me - I normally think they look ridiculous!

@MadeInChorley, thanks for the tips! I luckily only ever leaked at night with DS when I slept pressed on my boob which pushed milk out (😅🤷🏻‍♀️) - hoping it’s not something I’ll need to worry about this time but will definitely take breast pads for sure!

@MadeInChorley, I always thought you had to have a hat or similar but could definitely get on board with not wearing anything! I’m looking into booking myself hair and makeup as a little treat - definitely want my heart up since it’ll probably be warm and don’t want baby grabbing at it, spitting up in it etc.. 🙈

@MintJulia, this is what I was thinking too! I also have brown hair (probably same/v. Similar to models colour) so maybe that would work for me too 😊

Sorry to be a downer but I was still bleeding 1 month post birth & would have been nervous wearing such a light colour in case of a pad accident. That might just be me though!! Its a beautiful dress x

Came here to say the same. I think i would buy some light support skin toned cycling type shorts to wear underneath as an extra barrier - especially as if baby is late, you could only be a couple of weeks post partum and i was still bleeding very heavily at that point (and my baby was still in NICU but that's obviously a whole different set of circumstances).

For shoes, you could still be quite swollen so flats or wedges for sure.

Penguinsaregreat · 02/01/2023 09:53

I would wear flattish sandals in a neutral tone such as tan. Agree about not bothering with a bag, you will have enough to carry. I disagree about fascinators being outdated. If you fancy one go for purple or cream.
Dont bother matching the baby.

B1993 · 02/01/2023 09:54

@COL1N - good point! I think I only bled for around 3 weeks (at the most, I actually think I was more like 2) with DS so hoping it won’t be a problem!
@NoIncomeTaxNoVAT - good idea for nude cycle shorts - off to buy some now, just in case. Hoping baby doesn’t arrive late, DS arrived at 39+2 after a quick and spontaneous labour so hoping this baby is punctual too! In reality though, I know that doesn’t make a difference and this baby could still be late.

@Penguinsaregreat - thank you 😊

Bleeding was my first thought too, a pair of extra-heavy duty Modibodi pants would be on my list!

B1993 · 02/01/2023 10:21

Also, thanks everyone for the suggestion of no bag - definitely going to take this on board - I’m sure I’ll need a changing bag with me anyway for nappies and clothes changes so will put any other bits in there.

Any thoughts on any of these styles:

Fascinators are really out of fashion, as are pastel shoes, go for something metallic, and then you’ve got a chance of being able to wear them again too

Angeldelight81 · 02/01/2023 11:04

Another bit of an off piste recommendation. If you can be bothered would be to tone your arms up, it will stand you in good stead for lugging 2 kids around and make that dress like 100% better if your arms arent blending in with your boobs.

Divebar2021 · 02/01/2023 11:25

I don’t think a lot of people wear hats now to weddings ( although I’m a fan myself) so if you didn’t want to I’m sure it would be fine. You could do something “ pretty” with your hair - a soft braid or up-do and add a lovely clip or fresh flower. I would keep everything else as simple as possible just because the thought of being trussed up in anything tight is so unappealing - a month is not a huge amount of time assuming the baby is on time. The shoes I think I’d go metallic before I went pastel. Shawls and pashminas, shrugs etc all scream cliche to me I’m afraid but I’m not sure of an alternative for a knee length dress. Blazers tend to work for shorter or longer but not that length. I’d probably have access to a wrap of some kind because if I was cold enough I wouldn’t care about how it looked and it might be useful for the breastfeeding.

Penguinsaregreat · 02/01/2023 14:35

I think those shoes will be fine. You need to be comfortable if you are lugging a baby and pram around.

B1993 · 02/01/2023 15:17

Thanks - I might look into metallic ones but would the something I'd normally choose so not sure. On the website the model wears nude/blush pink. I'll pull up a picture:

@Penguinsaregreat, you're not the first to mention a pram! I wasn't even considering taking it really (not sure we'll have space with next to me crib, car seats and all the rest we'll need to fit in the car) but maybe I should rethink. DSis says venue is quite small and doesn't even have onsite accommodation. I thought of taking a baby carrier, if I needed. I've just bought a Cybex one in navy blue to go with my pram/car seat/changing bag but that obviously would look awful with the dress. Argh! There's more to think about than I first thought 🤦🏻‍♀️
