A really good ash brown hair dye? Pic

I dye my natural reddish brown hair a medium ash brown. When my roots come through they are lighter with a couple of greys and are very stubborn to colour.

The last few times I have coloured my hair I have used Garnier Olia Brown, which I loved, the colour, at first was lovely, a rich/deep neutral brown. But like the other branded dyes I’ve used in the past, after a few weeks, the colour washes out (if though it states they are permanent) and I’m left with a wishy washy mid brown with reddish/coppery tones. I’ve used L’Oréal Castings in Iced Truffle, Nice & Easy Light Ash Brown (both the permanent & semi). I’ve also tried Garnier Belle colour.

I did think about going for a darker shade like a number 4 but I don’t want to risk my hair coming out black! The lengths and ends will obviously have colour build up so they will always go slightly darker than my roots but they do wash up.

I just want a rich ash brown colour (like the pic ) and for it to last longer than 3 weeks!

any recommendations?

I feel your pain, I had this problem for years and I could never find a solution (part of the reason I stopped dying, but it doesn’t sound like that is for you at the moment).

It’s the developer in the hair dye that turns the hair an orange colour, so when whatever colour is over the top eventually fades, the orange comes through. Pretty much all dyes will do it!

I think the best bet is to concentrate on trying to hide this as much as possible. So use a blue shampoo weekly, Fanola is good. And then possibly an ash toner over the top in between dyes. I used to use Josh Wood - I think they’re called Gloss Shots. Probably others available, Superdrug do their own too I think.

Unfortunately, all hair colour permanent or semi needs redoing often, you will never find a dye that is truly permanent in colour. Especially if your hair has golden tones, it will always come back through quickly.

Majirel dark brown is this colour and no orange fading .
Gloss shots sound interesting which is why I live mumsnet.
I think the majirel

I have mid brown hair with a few greys and used to dye darker and darker to escape the red tinge but it never solved the problem. Eventually realised shade 7 works much better. I think it might be called dark blonde in some brands, but in Josh Wood it's called lightest brown which prompted me to try it. No brassiness ever, slightly golden undertones which I like. And on me very much a mid brown.
