Removing Hair Dye

Need advice please!
I've been dying my hair dark brown for many years. I'm now around 80% grey. I've been using only temporary dye for the last few months, which is reluctant to go.
I get married in a couple of months but I do NOT want to dye my hair anymore. Last time was in September so I have a couple cms growth.
Is it possible to use colour remover on it? Will it work? Will it make my hair orange? (I've heard it does). Also will it damage my hair?
My MIL dyes her hair dark in her mid sixties and I don't want this to be me. It looks pretty awful and I want to have healthy hair which I won't if I'm always dyeing it.
Thanks in advance for any advice!

Honestly, go to the hairdresser for something like this especially as your wedding is coming up.

A colour stripper will strip the colour from your hair but will leave it carrot orange. As a lifetime brunette box dye lover I tried it and ended up looking like a carrot. It also makes your head stink for days of chemicals! I would recommend a hairdresser !

Hairdresser hairdresser hairdresser.

Don't risk a DIY job before your big day.

Just an FYI though a friend has recently gone from dyed black to her natural totally grey and it took a year of gradual progress.

I’ve used colourb4 and my hair was orangey afterwards.
A hairdresser might be able to suggest how you can transition between the dye and the grey.

There are many home hair dye fail videos on YouTube. Watch them, then book the hairdresser.

Oh my word. Ok. Sold. I'm really glad I asked now. I do not want to be orange haired- especially on my wedding day. Thanks all for the dose of reality. I will need to work out what hair-ups will work on the day to reduce the weirdness of grey root growth though...

I would dye my hair as usual for the wedding day and cover up roots etc so you don't think about it and look lovely for the photos and then look to changing my hair after that

formulatingAresponse · 31/12/2022 15:04

You can of course try the sprays etc that specifically cover up roots for the day

L'Oréal do one so test that out

Thanks! I'm pretty desperate to avoid dying at this point so may try the sprays. Do they come out on clothes though? Are they like spray can stuff?

I'd definitely go for a consultation at the hairdressers - I did that about 18 months before my wedding. I spent a very long 6 hours in the hairdressers chair having years of dye removed from hair. I did indeed go carrot orange before they dyed it back to my natural colour.

If you want to go grey all over, they will be able to achieve this for you but it will probably need to be in several steps over a number of months.

Woeman · 31/12/2022 16:16

Honestly? You need to have one last dye job before the wedding. Don't change now! I've done the growing out a few times/gone blonde etc. Now is the wrong time, you haven't got long to wait. The sprays are OK but are claggy and might show up strange on your pics.

They are ok for an emergency. You have to be really careful about touching your hair till it’s dried. And if your hands are wet or sweaty it will
come off.

no harm in going to see what a hairdresser suggests.
